If Windows says “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC” and points to SrtTrail.txt, the filename identifies a diagnostic log—not one specific fault, and not proof your personal files are gone. Start with Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), try the least destructive recovery option that fits what happened, and back up important files before any reset or reinstall if you can.
What the SrtTrail.txt error means
Windows has tried Automatic Repair and recorded diagnostic details in an Srt log. The message means that attempt did not resolve the startup problem; it does not reveal the cause by itself. Startup problems can involve damaged system files or boot configuration, among other possibilities. The contents of your log and what happened just before Windows stopped starting matter. Microsoft explains what Startup Repair attempts to fix in its Startup Repair guidance and describes broader Windows startup issues.

- If WinRE is on screen, select Advanced options. Some recovery tools on a BitLocker-encrypted device may ask for its recovery key.
- If Windows starts intermittently, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup, or hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- If Windows will not start and WinRE does not appear, Microsoft documents triggering Automatic Repair by interrupting normal startup twice, or starting from a recovery drive or Windows installation media. The available route can vary by device.
- If important files are not backed up and you can access them, make a backup before choosing a reset, reinstall, or image restore. Those options can have different effects on files, apps, and settings.
WinRE is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; that support change does not alter the recovery steps, but matters if you are still running Windows 10. If you need installation media to reach WinRE
- On a working PC, use Microsoft’s instructions to create Windows installation media on a USB flash drive: Windows Recovery Environment.
- Connect the USB to the affected PC and start the PC from it. How to select a boot device varies by manufacturer, so follow that device’s instructions.
- At Windows Setup, choose Repair my PC rather than proceeding with installation. This opens recovery tools; the USB itself does not repair Windows.
Try Startup Repair once from WinRE
- From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then allow the tool to diagnose and attempt repairs.
- If Startup Repair reports that it could not repair the PC again, move to a different option below that matches what changed or what the diagnostics indicate. Repeating the same failed attempt is not a guaranteed fix.
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as a tool for diagnosing and attempting to fix some common startup problems, not every possible boot failure. Its instructions are at Startup Repair.
Choose the next recovery step based on what changed
A Windows update came just before the failure
In WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and choose the relevant update type if offered. Microsoft says uninstalling a selected update keeps personal files and apps, though some updates cannot be removed. Use the on-screen choices; do not assume every update can be rolled back. A restore point is available
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select a restore point from before the startup problem, if one is available. System Restore keeps personal files but rolls back system files and settings; apps, drivers, updates, or settings added since that point may be affected. A restore point is required for this route. WinRE’s Command Prompt can run offline checks, but first identify the actual Windows volume. Drive letters in WinRE may differ from the letters you see in normal Windows, so do not assume the installation is on C:.

- In Command Prompt, enter
bcdeditand find the Windows Boot Loader entry’sosdevicevalue. Use the drive letter shown there in the following commands. - To check and repair file-system errors, Microsoft’s example is
chkdsk /f D:. ReplaceD:with the identified volume. - To check protected system files offline, Microsoft’s example is
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows. Substitute the correct drive letter in both paths.
These command examples come from Microsoft Learn’s WinRE startup troubleshooting procedure, which is written for Windows Server. Treat it as a scoped technical procedure, not proof that every command is suitable for every consumer Windows configuration. If you are unsure of the volume or the command’s effect, stop rather than guessing.
Do not paste DISM /Online into WinRE as an offline repair: Microsoft’s consumer System File Checker instructions describe DISM followed by SFC in an elevated, running Windows session. The cited WinRE page’s offline DISM instructions are scoped to Windows Server 2012 and later.

The log mentions registry trouble
Do not blindly copy old files from RegBack as a standard fix. Microsoft says automatic registry backups to that folder stopped beginning with Windows 10 version 1803 and recommends using a restore point for a corrupt registry hive. If a restore point is unavailable, the log and the particular Windows configuration determine what recovery route is appropriate; the filename alone is not enough to diagnose it. Know what reset, reinstall, and image restore do to files
These choices are not interchangeable. Read the screen carefully, and back up important files first if possible. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss; its recovery-options guide and WinRE troubleshooting features describe the differences.

For a system-image restore, Microsoft documents using external storage to hold a backup and warns that restoring the image replaces the computer’s current programs, settings, and files. Do not select it as a routine boot repair unless that replacement is intended.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop before destructive recovery if your files are not backed up, you do not understand which volume a command targets, or a recovery screen’s wording does not match the choice you intend. If WinRE tools fail and you cannot safely access or back up the data, seek help from a qualified technician before resetting or reinstalling Windows.
