Treat an unexpected message as untrusted if it creates urgency, claims there is a problem with an account or delivery, asks for money or credentials, or contains a link. Check Google Messages’ warning signals, then verify the claim through an official app, a website you type yourself, or a phone number you obtained independently. Only after that should you decide whether to report, block, or delete the conversation.
Why an ordinary-looking text deserves a pause
Text scams work because people see a message quickly and often act before thinking. A Federal Trade Commission (FTC) consumer alert published in 2025 cited studies finding that text-message open rates can reach 98%. The same alert reported that consumers lost $470 million to text-message scams in 2024. Opening a message is not proof that it is malicious, but the speed and trust people place in texting make a short pause a useful security control.

Scammers can copy a company name, logo, writing style, or familiar conversation. Caller ID and a sender name are not authentication. A message that appears to come from a bank, delivery service, government office, employer, family member, or mobile provider can still be fraudulent. The question is not whether the message looks professional; it is whether you can confirm the claim using a channel the sender did not provide.

Google’s Android safety guidance states: “Legitimate businesses and government agencies will not demand instant action or payment over text message.” A demand to act immediately is therefore a reason to slow down, not a reason to comply.

The five-minute safe-verification workflow
1. Pause and classify the message as untrusted
Stop before touching any link, attachment, phone number, payment request, or reply field. Ask why the sender contacted you and whether the story fits something you actually did. You should pause when:
- You do not recognize the sender or did not initiate the conversation.
- The message says an account, order, delivery, payment, benefit, or subscription has a problem you did not expect.
- It uses a deadline, threat, warning of closure, or “act now” language.
- It asks for money, a password, a one-time code, a Social Security number, bank or card details, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or remote access.
- It includes a link, QR code, attachment, or request to move the conversation to another service.
Unexpected contact is not automatically a scam, but it changes the correct default: verify first and interact later.
2. Do not interact with the message
The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t reply to unexpected text messages” and “Never click links in unexpected messages.” Do not call the supplied number, download a file, pay an invoice, or provide a password or one-time passcode. Replying can confirm that your number reaches a real person, and a response may invite a second stage of the scam.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not use the message’s contact details to investigate it. A scammer controls those details and can route you to another scammer or to a look-alike sign-in page. If the message claims your bank needs verification, for example, do not call the number in the text; use the number printed on your bank card or statement instead.

3. Check Google Messages’ built-in signals
Google Messages may display a spam or scam warning, move a conversation to Spam, or warn about a potentially harmful URL. Its detection can use on-device machine learning and URL checks. These signals are useful evidence, but they are not a verdict in either direction: a warning is a strong reason to stop, while the absence of a warning does not prove that a message is safe.
To check and enable the available protection setting:
- Open Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initials.
- Choose Messages settings.
- Open Protection & safety.
- Turn on Spam protection, if the setting is available.
Labels and availability vary by device, region, and Google Messages version. If you see a warning or the conversation has been moved to Spam, do not override it merely because the sender name looks familiar.
4. Verify through a channel you find yourself
Use one of these independent routes:
- Open the organization’s known official app from your phone’s app list. Do not install an app from the text.
- Type the organization’s web address yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not copy the address from the message.
- Use a phone number printed on a bank card, account statement, membership card, official bill, or a directory you already trust.
- If the message concerns a workplace, delivery, school, or family matter, contact the person or organization through a separate channel you already use.
After signing in through the independent route, look for the same alert or transaction. If the official account shows no matching event, treat the text as fraudulent. Even if you find a matching event, finish the verification in the official app or website rather than using the text’s link.

5. Report, block, and remove the conversation
In Google Messages, use the conversation’s spam-report option, then block or delete the thread. The exact menu wording can vary with the app version, but the action is normally available from the conversation or its overflow menu. You can also forward unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM), a reporting route promoted by the FTC, and report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Keep a copy or screenshot before deleting if you may need to show the message to your bank, mobile provider, employer, or authorities. Include the sender information, the full text, links as displayed (without opening them), dates, and any related transaction details.
How to read the strongest warning signs
Unexpected sender or mismatched context
A first-time message is more suspicious when you have no related order, account activity, appointment, or conversation. A scammer may use a plausible story—such as a missed parcel or an account notice—to create context after the fact. Compare the claim with your own records, not with the sender’s explanation.
Urgency, threats, and secrecy
“Act now,” immediate deadlines, threats of arrest or account closure, and instructions not to tell anyone are designed to prevent independent checking. Google’s Android report says legitimate businesses and government agencies will not demand instant action or payment over text. A real problem can usually be checked after you open the official app or contact the organization through a known number.

Requests for secrets, payment, or remote control
Never disclose passwords, one-time passcodes, Social Security numbers, bank details, card numbers, gift-card codes, cryptocurrency payments, or remote-access approval because a text requested them. One-time codes are especially sensitive: they can allow someone who already has your password to complete a sign-in. A request for remote access can let a stranger control the device or view private data.
Links, QR codes, and attachments
A link can lead to a spoofed login page that captures credentials or to malware. An attachment can exploit a vulnerable app or persuade you to install software. Google Messages may warn about or block a suspected harmful URL, but detection cannot identify every newly created or modified scam. Do not test a link by opening it “just to see.” If you need the service, reach it through the independently verified app or address.
Impersonation and look-alike details
A familiar company name, logo, short code, profile image, or caller ID does not establish authenticity. Small spelling changes, unusual punctuation, a new payment destination, or a request to continue in a different app are clues, but a polished message can still be fake. Independent verification matters more than appearance.
Scenario guide: what to do with common messages
| Scenario | What to check | Least-risk next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Your package is delayed; pay a small redelivery fee.” | Whether you have an order, and its status in the retailer or carrier app you already use. | Do not tap the link or pay. Check the order independently, then report, block, and delete if it does not match. |
| “Your bank account will be closed today; verify now.” | Alerts and secure messages in the bank’s official app or website. | Do not call the supplied number or share a code. Call the number on your card or statement. |
| “You won a prize; send a fee or gift-card code.” | Whether you entered a legitimate promotion and its independently published rules. | Do not pay or send codes. Report the message and preserve evidence. |
| “A relative needs money urgently.” | Contact the person using a number or account you already have, or confirm with another family member. | Do not reply to the text or transfer money until identity is confirmed outside the conversation. |
| “Here is the one-time code you requested.” | Whether you just started that sign-in or recovery process through the official service. | Never forward the code. If you did not request it, change the account password through the official site and review account security. |
| A message from a known business with no link or payment request. | Whether the contact fits a recent appointment, order, or conversation. | Still verify through the business’s known app or number before sharing information. |
What to do if you already replied, clicked, or shared information
If you only replied
Stop the conversation and do not send additional information. Block and report the thread. A reply alone does not prove that an account or device was compromised, but continuing gives the sender more opportunities to pressure you.
Best Value
If you clicked a link or opened an attachment
Close the page or file and do not enter credentials, approve a download, or grant permissions. Contact the real organization through its known app or website and explain what happened. Watch for unexpected sign-in alerts, password-reset messages, or new transactions. The exact technical response depends on what opened and what you did next, so do not assume that closing a tab resolved every risk.
If you entered a password or one-time code
From the official site—not from the text—change the affected password immediately and enable multi-factor authentication where available. If you reused that password elsewhere, change those accounts too, beginning with email because email can be used to reset other accounts. Review active sessions and sign out devices you do not recognize.
If financial or identity information was exposed
Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, payment service, or identity provider through a known channel. Ask what protective steps apply to the specific account or transaction. Preserve the message, screenshots, receipts, and transaction details for the provider or authorities. Report the fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). There is no single remediation sequence for every Android version or every type of exposed data; the provider handling the affected account can tell you which holds, replacements, or monitoring steps are appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake verification easier before the next suspicious text
- Keep Spam protection enabled in Google Messages when the setting is offered on your device.
- Save official customer-service numbers from statements, cards, and account pages instead of relying on numbers sent by text.
- Install the official apps you use and sign in through them rather than through message links.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for important accounts and use unique passwords.
- Tell family members, especially anyone who may feel pressured by urgent requests, that a pause and a second-channel check are normal.
- Keep records of legitimate delivery, banking, and appointment notifications so an unexpected claim is easier to spot.
Google reported that more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts were being flagged each month in 2026. That is a Google-reported product figure and may change as rollout and measurement change; it is not a guarantee that every scam will be detected. Your independent check remains the deciding control.
A quick decision checklist
- Pause: Did the message arrive unexpectedly or create pressure?
- Protect: Have you avoided replying, calling, tapping, downloading, paying, and sharing secrets?
- Inspect: Did Google Messages show a warning or move the conversation to Spam?
- Verify: Can you confirm the claim in an official app, a website you typed yourself, or a number from a trusted record?
- Act: If it is fraudulent or cannot be verified, report it, block it, and delete it after preserving evidence if needed.
If any answer in the verification step is “no,” do not reply yet. An unexpected text does not become trustworthy merely because it contains your name, a familiar logo, or a plausible deadline.
