Galaxy AI has two translation tools: Live Translate translates supported phone calls and app conversations with spoken audio and on-screen text, while Interpreter translates an in-person conversation in a split-screen view. Select both languages, download any required language packs, and then use the microphone or call controls described below. Availability depends on your Galaxy model, One UI version, region and app.
Live Translate and Interpreter are different tools
Samsung separates Galaxy AI translation into two workflows. Choosing the right one first prevents the most common setup mistake: opening Interpreter when you actually need to translate a remote call, or looking for Live Translate during a face-to-face conversation.

Live Translate: calls and supported apps
Live Translate is designed for a phone call or an audio conversation inside a supported calling or messaging app. During the conversation, Galaxy AI can provide translated voice and on-screen text. You speak normally; the other person hears the translated output when the feature is available for that call, and you can read the text on the call screen.
Interpreter: two people sharing one phone
Interpreter is for people who are physically together. It uses a split-screen layout: the lower half shows your language and the upper half shows the other speaker’s translated language. Samsung describes it as a way for people standing opposite each other to read a text translation of what the other person is saying. You can copy the displayed text or play a translation aloud.

| Do we need to take turns manually? | Interpreter’s Tap to talk option | Each speaker presses the microphone before speaking instead of relying on automatic switching. |
Check compatibility before trying to translate
Feature availability is not identical on every Galaxy device. Samsung’s regional documentation identifies supported Galaxy generations with One UI 6.1 or later, but the exact models, menus and rollout can differ by country. Wi-Fi-only tablet exclusions and other model-specific limits are also documented regionally. Check the Galaxy AI or translation controls on your own device rather than assuming that every Galaxy phone or tablet has the same functions.
- Use a supported Galaxy model running the required One UI version for your region; many regional guides specify One UI 6.1 or later.
- Keep the Phone app and any calling or messaging app involved in the conversation current. Samsung says supported-app lists can change.
- Confirm that your country and device variant expose the feature. A function shown in one regional guide may not appear in another.
- Plan language-pack downloads before a conversation. Some languages require a free download and Samsung warns that availability and results vary by region.
Download language packs
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Open Language packs.
- Find the language you need and download it when a download option is shown.
Language packs are separate from choosing a language in Interpreter or Live Translate. If a language is missing from a picker, return to this menu first. Samsung also says that newly supported languages and dialects are delivered as downloadable packs, so the list can expand after a device update.
Which languages does Galaxy AI support?
Samsung’s current regional support pages list the languages and regional variants below. The exact names in your language picker can differ slightly, and a language may require a free pack download. Treat the picker on your own Galaxy device as the final availability check.
| Language | Regional variant or wording listed by Samsung |
|---|---|
| Arabic | Arabic |
| Bahasa Indonesia | Bahasa Indonesia |
| Chinese | Chinese Simplified; Cantonese and Traditional variants |
| Dutch | Dutch |
| English | Australia, India, United Kingdom and United States |
| French | Canada and France |
| German | German |
| Hindi | Hindi |
| Italian | Italian |
| Japanese | Japanese |
| Korean | Korean |
| Polish | Polish |
| Portuguese | Brazil and Portugal |
| Romanian | Romanian |
| Russian | Russian |
| Spanish | Mexico, Spain and United States |
| Swedish | Swedish |
| Thai | Thai |
| Turkish | Turkish |
| Vietnamese | Vietnamese |
Samsung’s original launch documentation named 13 languages; later language-pack updates expanded the list. That launch number is historical, not a limit on the current catalog. Regional pages can differ in both naming and availability, so do not infer support for a particular dialect merely from the name of a broader language.

How to use Interpreter for an in-person conversation
Interpreter works best when the phone is placed between the speakers with the screen facing both of them. Set the languages before speaking so each half of the display is assigned correctly.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick settings.
- Tap Interpreter.
- Use the two drop-down menus to choose the language for each speaker.
- Tap the microphone beside the language for the person who is about to speak.
- Hold or place the phone so both people can read their half of the display.
- Speak in normal, reasonably short turns and wait for the translated text or audio output.
Choose automatic or manual turn-taking
Open Interpreter settings and turn on Tap to talk when each person should manually press the microphone before speaking. This is useful when two voices might otherwise be picked up at once, or when you want to control exactly when a translation starts. With Tap to talk turned off, the microphones switch automatically between speakers.
Read, copy or hear the result
The bottom half of the screen represents your language; the top half shows the other person’s translation. Use the on-screen controls to copy translated text when you need to paste it elsewhere, or play the translation aloud when reading is inconvenient. Keep the phone still and visible to both people rather than turning it toward only one speaker.
Interpreter history
Samsung says Interpreter history is deleted after 24 hours. If you need a translation for longer, copy the text during the conversation instead of relying on the history view later.

- Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.
How to use Live Translate for a phone call
Live Translate is built into the Samsung Phone call workflow on supported devices. You can start a new call or enable it after answering an incoming call.
- Open the Samsung Phone app and start or answer a call.
- Tap Call Assist.
- Choose Live translate.
- At the top of the call screen, select your language and the other caller’s language.
- Speak normally. The phone supplies translated voice and translated text during the call.
If Call Assist or Live translate is not present, do not substitute Interpreter for a remote call. Check the device, One UI version, region and installed language packs first; the control is not guaranteed on every Galaxy model.
Change Live Translate defaults
For persistent settings, open Phone > More options (three dots) > Settings > Live translate. Samsung documents voice and language presets in this area, along with controls for muting translated voices. Configure those options before a call if you want the same language pair or voice behavior each time.

Samsung does not provide one universal button path for every third-party app. Start the voice or video conversation in the app, then look for the Live Translate control supplied by the Galaxy software. If no control appears, verify the app is current and that your device and region are eligible; an app being named on a support list does not guarantee identical behavior on every release.
How to get more reliable turn-taking
Galaxy AI translation is easier to follow when the conversation is structured for the tool.
- Choose the exact regional variant offered by the picker when one is available, such as Canadian versus France French or Brazil versus Portugal Portuguese.
- Use short, complete sentences and pause after one person finishes. This gives automatic microphone switching a clear boundary.
- For a busy environment or overlapping speech, enable Tap to talk and have each person press only their own microphone.
- Keep the phone’s split screen visible to both speakers for Interpreter; do not expect the remote-call layout to behave like the face-to-face layout.
- When a wording matters, read the translated text and use the play-aloud control together rather than relying on audio alone.
- Copy important translated text immediately if you will need it after the conversation, because Interpreter history is removed after 24 hours.
Troubleshoot missing languages, controls and translations
A language is not in the menu
Open Settings > General management > Language packs and download the language if it is offered. If it is not listed, the language or regional variant may not be available for your model or country. Samsung’s regional pages are not identical, so use the device’s own picker as the authoritative check.

Interpreter is missing from Quick settings
Confirm that the phone is a supported Galaxy generation and that its One UI version meets the regional requirement. Install available system updates, then check language packs. Wi-Fi-only tablets and some other models are excluded in regional documentation, so the absence of the tile may be a compatibility limit rather than a disabled setting.

Live Translate does not appear during a call
Use the Samsung Phone app, then look specifically under Call Assist. If the option is absent, check the model, One UI version, region and language packs. A call made in a third-party app follows that app’s own support path; the Samsung Phone menu will not necessarily appear there.
The translation voice is silent
Review Phone > More options (three dots) > Settings > Live translate and check the documented mute-voice controls and voice presets. Also verify that you selected the intended language for each participant. For Interpreter, use the play-aloud control on the translated text when you need spoken output.
The wrong person is being translated
In Interpreter, tap the microphone beside the language of the person who is speaking. If automatic switching is confusing the turns, enable Tap to talk. On a call, recheck the two language selections at the top of the Live Translate screen.

The app is listed but has no translation button
Samsung can change supported-app coverage, and app, account, region and software versions can expose different controls. Update the app and Galaxy software, confirm both language packs are installed, and test the feature in Samsung Phone if you need to determine whether the limitation is app-specific.
Accuracy, availability and sensible expectations
Samsung’s support material explains how to activate the tools and lists supported languages, but the material does not publish an independent accuracy benchmark. Samsung also warns that translation results may vary. Treat the output as assistance, not as a guaranteed interpretation of legal, medical, financial or safety-critical wording.
Regional availability is another hard limit. Language names, supported apps, device eligibility and menu labels can change as Samsung distributes new language packs and software updates. A feature that works on a Galaxy S24 reference device in one market may not be exposed on a different model or in another market. Check the relevant language picker and settings on the actual phone before promising a conversation to someone else.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Face to face: open Quick settings, choose Interpreter, set both languages and decide whether Tap to talk is needed.
- Samsung Phone call: open or answer the call, choose Call Assist, then Live translate and select both languages.
- Google Meet, WhatsApp or another listed app: start the conversation in that app and look for its available Live Translate control; support can change.
- Language missing: download it under Settings > General management > Language packs, or verify that the regional variant is not supported on your device.
- Control missing: check the Galaxy model, One UI version, region and app version before troubleshooting audio or microphones.
