Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A NAS backup is only proven useful when you can restore the data you need. Run the backup software’s integrity check, then restore representative files to a separate test location and open or validate them. For a full-device or service failure scenario, rehearse recovery in an isolated environment if your NAS and backup software support it.
What a successful backup test proves
A completed job confirms that the backup process ran; it does not prove that the destination contains usable data, that an older version is retained, or that you can decrypt and restore it when needed. A practical test combines two different checks:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Integrity check: Scans backup data for certain inconsistencies or corruption. What it checks depends on the software, job type, and version.
- Restore drill: Retrieves data into a separate location, where you verify that it opens and matches the expected version. This tests more of the recovery path, including access to the destination and any required credentials.
Neither a software integrity check nor a small file restore alone proves that every workload can be recovered after a disaster. Test the recovery scenario that matters to you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare a safe, representative test
- Identify the backup job and destination. Note which NAS or external drive holds the copy, what data the job includes, and whether it uses encryption.
- Choose the backup version to test. Record the date or version you intend to restore. If version history matters, include both a recently changed file and an older retained version.
- Select representative data. Include a few important files and a folder whose expected names and structure you know. If you rely on an application or system backup, identify a recovery path for that workload too.
- Have recovery credentials ready. Confirm that you have the password or key required to access an encrypted backup.
- Choose a separate restore destination. Use a test folder or device rather than the live source location. Do not restore over current files as part of a test.
Run an integrity check, if your backup software supports one
Integrity checks are useful, but their scope and cost vary. A quick or metadata-oriented check can be less demanding; a content check can examine data more thoroughly and may require more system resources or network transfer. Availability also varies by software version and backup job type.

QNAP HBS 3
QNAP documents Quick Check and Content Check in HBS 3. In the documented manual procedure, open HBS 3 > Backup & Restore, select a job, choose Check Data Integrity, then run the supported check. Content Check must be enabled in the job configuration. The exact options can differ by job type and installed version, so confirm the labels and supported method in your release. QNAP’s integrity-check instructions explain the procedure. [c005]
QNAP describes Content Check as more thorough than Quick Check, with potentially higher system and network demands. If HBS 3 detects corruption, it may attempt repair, but repair is not available for every job configuration, and older versions may have restrictions. A successful check—or an attempted repair—does not replace restoring and validating the data you depend on. QNAP’s comparison of check types and its repair guidance describe those limits. Synology Hyper Backup
Synology notes that if an integrity check finds destination corruption, a Hyper Backup task can change to Restore Only. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends addressing the cause and recreating the task; it also advises checking both the source system and, for a remote NAS destination, the destination system. Treat this status as a warning that needs investigation, not as proof that a usable recovery copy remains. Synology’s Restore Only guidance provides details. [c001]
Restore files to a separate location and inspect them
- Use your backup application’s restore workflow to select the chosen job and backup version.
- Restore the sample into a new test folder or onto a separate device, not over the live source.
- Open files in the applications that normally use them. For other data, compare names, file sizes, folder structure, contents, and expected versions against what you know should be present.
- For encrypted backups, confirm that the restored content is accessible with the recovery credentials.
- Record missing, damaged, inaccessible, or unexpected items, as well as any error messages.
A file that appears in a backup browser but cannot be restored, opened, or decrypted has not passed a useful recovery test. If a restore fails, preserve the error details, investigate the job and destination, and test another retained version if one is available.

Rehearse full-system recovery separately
Restoring a few files does not establish that a NAS, computer, or application can be rebuilt after a major failure. If that is a scenario you need to handle, practice in an isolated environment or on spare hardware where the vendor supports the recovery method. Keep the test separate from production so it cannot overwrite live data or interfere with services.
Synology describes using a built-in hypervisor for isolated disaster-recovery drills on supported workloads. That is a vendor-specific option, not a feature available on every household NAS. Check the instructions for your NAS, backup package, and workload before relying on a virtualized recovery drill. Synology’s backup guidance describes its approach. [c002]

- Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures
Record the result and repeat the test
Keep a short recovery log so you know what has actually been tested. Record the test date, job and backup version, items or workload restored, destination, elapsed time, errors, and any corrective action. Set a recurring reminder at an interval suited to the importance of the data, and repeat the drill after major changes to the job, destination, encryption, or retention settings.

Keep independent copies; do not treat RAID or snapshots as the test
RAID can help keep a NAS available through some drive failures, and snapshots can provide a way back to an earlier point. Neither demonstrates that an independent backup can be recovered. Synology notes that RAID or drive failure may still lead to data loss, while multi-version local copies can help with accidental deletion or corruption. QNAP recommends backing snapshots up to another NAS. Keep a separate copy and test a restore from that copy. Synology’s backup guidance and QNAP’s snapshot backup guidance discuss these roles. [c009] [c006]
An external USB drive can be one possible physical backup destination, but compatibility and the restore workflow depend on the NAS and its software. Test the actual backup on the actual drive rather than assuming that a completed copy is recoverable. Synology’s guidance on backup destinations and versions includes external drives. [c008]
