Find that address in the project’s official documentation, then compare it character by character with the address shown in the correct network’s explorer and your wallet before trading. Explorer verification, visible activity, and liquidity can help you assess risk, but none guarantees that a token is safe or that you will be able to sell it.
What to check before buying a token
- Confirm the network and address. Find the contract address or mint in the issuer’s official website or documentation, reached through a known bookmark or independently confirmed domain. Search the address in the explorer for that network. Compare the entire address, including middle characters, with the project documentation and wallet or swap prompt. A token’s name, symbol, and logo are not unique; anyone can create a duplicate. The FBI warns that address-poisoning schemes exploit truncated address displays, so matching only the first and last characters is not enough. See the FBI’s warning on token impersonation.
- Compare the token details. Check the explorer’s name, symbol, and metadata against the issuer’s materials, but treat a match as a clue rather than proof: a copied token can reproduce those details. Make sure you are using the intended chain; an address or verification result on one network does not establish identity on another.
- Check what the explorer says about the code or mint. For an EVM contract, see whether source code is verified and whether the explorer distinguishes a partial from a full match. On Solana, check the mint address directly and read what Explorer’s verification status actually means. These labels have different meanings across networks, explained below.
- Look at recent activity and the market you would use. Review whether ordinary holders appear to sell, and inspect liquidity and the likely price impact for the trade you intend to make. A lack of visible sells or thin liquidity is a reason to pause, not conclusive proof of a scam. Conversely, a few successful trades or a large displayed liquidity figure do not establish that you can exit at a reasonable price.
- Inspect the wallet request before signing. Confirm the network, token, amount, recipient, and requested approval scope match the trade you intend to make. Decline a request that does not. Broad or effectively unlimited approvals can give a contract substantial authority to spend the approved tokens. Never share a seed phrase to verify a token or wallet.

What “verified” means—and what it does not
EVM contract source verification
On an EVM chain, source verification generally means the published source and compiler settings reproduce bytecode associated with the deployed contract. As Ethereum.org explains, this makes the code inspectable; it does not prove that the code is correct, harmless, or economically sound. A partial match does not compare the metadata hash, while a full verification also matches that metadata. Neither label is a security audit.

Solana Explorer aggregates independent verification providers. Its status helps identify the canonical token for a name, symbol, and mint address, but it is not an endorsement or guarantee. Solana’s documentation states: “Verification is not an endorsement of a project, and it is not a guarantee of a token’s value, safety, or legitimacy.” Read Solana’s explanation of token verification and confirm the mint address rather than relying on the label alone.

When to investigate contract controls
If you can assess the code—or have a qualified person do so—look for privileged functions relevant to the contract’s design. Questions can include whether an administrator can pause transfers, change fees, blacklist addresses, mint additional tokens, or upgrade the contract. These are questions to investigate, not findings about any particular token; their presence and significance depend on the code and how controls are governed.
If an audit is offered as evidence, locate the original report and check the auditor, date, scope, contract address, and version. An audit badge alone does not tell you whether the deployed code is the code reviewed or whether the report covers the risks that matter to your intended use.

How to judge the evidence without over-relying on it
- Explorer labels and comments: useful leads, but labels may be incomplete and comments can be manipulated. MetaMask cautions that explorer comments may be influenced by fraudulent actors.
- Activity: transactions show that activity occurred, not that a market is healthy or that every holder can sell.
- Liquidity: inspect the actual venue and likely price impact for your trade; a displayed figure alone is not a promise of an exit price.
- Wallet simulations and audits: additional evidence, not guarantees. MetaMask notes that certainty about a contract requires extensive familiarity with Solidity and related languages sufficient to audit it yourself.
For a fuller discussion of contract-interaction risks, see MetaMask’s smart-contract safety guidance.

If something does not match, stop
Do not buy while the identity is unresolved. Stop if the address differs, the network is unclear, you find an unexplained restriction or privileged control, the market appears too thin for your trade, or the wallet request does not match what you intended. Seek trusted technical help rather than signing under uncertainty.
