If a custom .pkpass file will not add to Apple Wallet, first check the pass data and its digital signature—not just how you opened the file. Apple identifies malformed JSON, misspelled keys, a pass type identifier that does not match the signing certificate, and a missing Apple Worldwide Developer Relations Intermediate Certificate among common problems. The precise reason depends on the pass and the target device; Wallet logs can help identify it.
Check the pass file and its required fields
Start with the original downloaded .pkpass file. Make sure it is the intended pass, rather than a preview, renamed archive, or intermediary webpage. For a pass downloaded from a website, Apple’s documented flow is to tap an Add to Apple Wallet button and download the pass: Apple’s pass distribution guidance.

Inspect pass.json inside the pass package. Apple requires formatVersion to be 1, along with passTypeIdentifier, serialNumber, and organizationName. The combination of pass type identifier and serial number uniquely identifies a pass. See Apple’s pass-building documentation for the format requirements.

- Parse the file as JSON and correct any syntax errors.
- Check exact spelling and capitalization of keys and values; Apple lists malformed JSON and misspelled keys or values as common problems.
- Confirm that
formatVersionis the number1and that the required fields are present.
After correcting the source data, rebuild and sign the pass again. Renaming a file or changing its extension does not repair malformed pass contents.

Verify the signing certificate and identifiers
A pass must be signed correctly. Compare the passTypeIdentifier and teamIdentifier in the pass with the signing identity. The pass type identifier must match the certificate used to sign it, and Apple’s build guidance also calls for a matching team identifier and an unexpired certificate. The signature must include Apple’s Worldwide Developer Relations Intermediate Certificate. If you change any pass data, sign the rebuilt pass again. A signature for an earlier version will not validate a modified pass.

Use Wallet logs to find the specific rejection
If the format and signing checks look right, inspect device logs rather than assuming a cause. Apple’s coupon-pass debugging guidance recommends checking logs when a pass does not display or add to Wallet: Debugging Coupon Passes.
- Simulator: Drag the
.pkpassfile onto the Simulator, then inspect the Simulator device logs in Console. - Physical iPhone or iPad: Use Xcode’s Organizer or console workflow to inspect the connected device logs.
Filter or search the log for the pass type ID or serial number to narrow down relevant entries. Use the reported error to decide what to fix; without the file and its log entry, no single cause can be diagnosed with certainty.

Retry through a supported delivery route
Apple documents adding passes from an app or App Clip, downloading one from a webpage, or receiving it as an email attachment. For website distribution, the page should present an Add to Apple Wallet button and download the pass when the user taps it. If you suspect the delivery path, retry with the original pass through one of these documented routes: Distributing and Updating a Pass.

webServiceURL and authenticationToken are used by a server to register and update passes that are already installed. They are not identified as required keys for a basic installation. Investigate them if the pass installs but later fails to update, rather than treating their absence as the explanation for an add-to-Wallet rejection: Apple’s pass update web-service documentation.
