1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo assess a crypto presale, first confirm the sale contract’s network and address, then check what its published code and on-chain controls actually allow. Separately reconcile the token supply, allocations, sale terms and unlock schedule against project documents. A verified-source label only indicates a match between published source and deployed code under a verification method; it does not establish that the address is the right one, that the contract is safe, or that the project’s economic claims are true.
What a verified contract label does—and does not—tell you
Contract source-code verification compares published source code and compilation inputs with bytecode deployed at a particular address. Ethereum.org describes this as assuring users that the published code is the code running at the address. That is a statement about code identity, not about whether the code behaves safely or whether the project’s claims are credible.

Verification is also not the same as formal verification. Formal verification tests whether behavior meets a specified correctness property. An explorer’s verified label does not mean that an independent reviewer proved the contract secure.

Check the stated match type. Ethereum.org distinguishes a full match, which uses a metadata-hash comparison to confirm the exact source and compilation fingerprint, from a partial match, which does not provide that same metadata-hash assurance. Ethereum.org reports that Etherscan verification is partial in this respect and that Sourcify supports full matches. Explorer behavior and chain support can change, so read the status and method shown for the particular contract rather than treating “verified” as a universal standard.

How to check the contract, step by step
- Establish the canonical address. Record the network and sale-contract address published in the project’s official sale terms or documentation. Compare them with the live chain and independent explorer information. Do not infer that an address is genuine just because it has verified source code.
- Check that code exists at that address. Open the address on an explorer for the stated network. Inspect the verification status and whether the result is a full or partial match. If the source is absent, the address differs, or the network does not match the sale documents, stop until the discrepancy is explained.
- Map the contracts involved. Inspect the sale contract, token contract, vesting contracts and any proxy or implementation contracts—not only the first address linked from the sale page. A sale can rely on several contracts, and reviewing one does not explain the controls or token flows in the others.
- Identify privileged functions and controllers. Look for owner or admin roles and functions that can mint tokens, pause activity, change fees or sale parameters, upgrade a contract, or withdraw funds. Record which address controls each power and whether the project explains who controls it and what safeguards apply.
- Compare code and live behavior with the sale terms. Check whether the contract’s functions, configured parameters and fund-handling arrangements match what the project says buyers will receive. If a key term depends on an administrator’s discretion rather than being enforced by a contract, treat that as a material distinction.
- Match any audit to the deployed code. Verify that the report identifies the relevant address, repository or code version, and components. Read the findings, severity, remediation status and exclusions; check whether reviewed code changed afterward.
- Reconcile the economics and rights. Compare supply, allocations, price, caps, vesting and release timing, use of proceeds, token utility and holder rights across project documents and on-chain data where available.
This is an evidence-gathering sequence, not a certification method. If you cannot connect a stated fact to the relevant address, code, report or sale term, mark it as unverified rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
Which contract powers matter most?
Read the source and explorer details for authority, not just for the presence of familiar function names. A power may be exercised by an owner, administrator, role holder or upgrade mechanism; the important questions are who controls it, what it can change and whether that control is disclosed.

- Minting or issuance: Can additional tokens be created? Who can do it, and are there stated limits or disclosures about future issuance?
- Pausing: Can an administrator halt transfers, the sale or other functionality? What activity is affected, and what conditions govern resumption?
- Upgradeability: Can the deployed logic be replaced or changed through a proxy or other upgrade path? Who can authorize an upgrade, and are the process and limits explained?
- Sale and fee changes: Can an administrator alter price, sale caps, timing, fees or other parameters after launch? Compare those powers with the terms buyers are given.
- Withdrawals: Who can move funds from the sale, and do the stated proceeds and refund arrangements match the contract’s controls?
Access controls and upgrade patterns are recognized security concerns, but their existence alone does not prove malicious intent. Undisclosed, highly concentrated or unexplained authority is a significant risk signal because it can leave buyers dependent on decisions that the published sale terms may not make clear.
How to read an audit without treating it as a guarantee
An audit is scoped evidence about the code and review performed, not a promise that a presale is safe. Investor.gov advises prospective ICO participants to ask whether code is published and whether an independent cybersecurity audit exists. Ethereum.org also cautions that testing in isolation has limited effectiveness and recommends independent review.

- Match the audit’s contract address, code repository or version, and included components to the contracts actually used by the sale.
- Read findings and severity levels, not just the report’s summary or the project’s statement that it was audited.
- Check whether reported issues were fixed and whether the fixes were reviewed.
- Look for exclusions, such as components, functions or assumptions outside the review’s scope.
- Determine whether code or contract configuration changed after the audit. A report on an earlier version does not establish that later changes were reviewed.
If the contract is complex or the report’s scope is difficult to interpret, an independent smart-contract security review may help explain what was examined. Such a review remains limited to its stated scope and is not a guarantee of safety.

Write down the project’s economic claims before comparing them. The same terms should be traceable across sale documents, token documentation, contract settings and vesting arrangements where those are on-chain. SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce’s 2025 recommendations identify offering mechanics, use of proceeds, distribution schedules, utility, supply and issuance, and token-holder rights as disclosure topics; those recommendations are not a binding disclosure rule.

| What to compare | Questions to answer | What to reconcile |
|---|---|---|
| Total and circulating supply | What does the project mean by each figure, and when is it measured? | Token documentation, issuance controls and any on-chain supply data available. |
| Presale allocation and price | How many tokens are offered, at what price, and subject to what sale cap? | Sale terms, configured contract parameters and the stated treatment of unsold tokens. |
| Team, treasury and ecosystem allocations | Who receives these tokens, and in what proportions or amounts? | Published allocation figures and any relevant token or vesting contracts. |
| Issuance, minting and burning | Can supply increase or decrease after the sale, and who can trigger it? | Documented supply policy and privileged contract functions. |
| Vesting and unlocks | When does vesting begin? Is there a cliff? How often are tokens released? | Published schedules, vesting-wallet settings and any issuer discretion. |
| Utility and holder rights | What can token holders use or claim, and what rights—if any—come with holding the token? | Sale terms and token documentation; do not assume a token confers rights that are not stated. |
| Use of proceeds | What does the project say funds will be used for, and who controls them? | Offering statements and the contract’s fund-handling and withdrawal powers. |
| Refunds and resale limits | Are refunds or resale restricted, and under what conditions? | Sale terms and relevant contract behavior; distinguish a stated policy from an enforceable mechanism. |
Use the same definitions and timing when comparing two projects. A supply number without a date or definition is hard to compare with another project’s figure. Likewise, a stated allocation is not the same thing as a locked allocation: check whether the release schedule is enforced by a contract or depends on the issuer’s discretion.

Investor.gov recommends asking how offering funds will be used, what rights a token provides, and whether resale or refunds are limited. It also warns readers to be wary of promises of high returns with little or no risk. A promised return, urgency to buy, or pressure to act before checking the contract is not evidence of a sound offering.
For a U.S. offering, the SEC says classification depends on the facts and circumstances; a project’s preferred label does not settle the question. That is a U.S.-specific legal framework, not a conclusion about every jurisdiction or any individual presale. The questions in this article are for evaluating evidence, not determining whether an offering is lawful. Seek qualified legal advice for jurisdiction-specific questions.
When to pause rather than proceed
- The project will not identify the chain or canonical sale address, or the address differs across its materials.
- Source code is unavailable, or the verification result does not establish the match the project claims.
- Privileged controls, upgrade paths, minting powers or withdrawal rights are unexplained or inconsistent with the stated terms.
- Supply figures, allocations, prices or unlock schedules conflict across project documents and contract data.
- An audit covers a different address or version, excludes material components, or has findings whose fixes are unclear.
- There is pressure to buy quickly, a promise of unusually high or guaranteed returns, or no clear account of token rights, refunds or proceeds.
When information does not reconcile, do not treat the missing explanation as a favorable answer. The CFTC advises extensive due diligence on people and entities associated with an offering and warns that buying solely in expectation of resale at a higher price is speculation with considerable risk.
