Verify the exact legal entity behind a crypto investment platform, then check that entity and the service it offers against the relevant regulator’s official records. Independently confirm contact details, investigate the named operators, and scrutinize how the investment works. A registration entry, polished app, visible account balance, or successful small withdrawal is not proof that a platform is safe.
How do I verify a crypto investment platform?
Use the same checks for every platform, whether you found it through an app store, an online ad, a social-media pitch, or a personal recommendation. Start with the company and the activity it performs—not just the brand name. Save copies of the website, terms, messages, and claims as you go; they can change or disappear.

- Identify the legal counterparty. Record the precise company or individual name, claimed country of establishment, registered address, regulator, registration or firm reference number, and the service being offered. Distinguish among an exchange or trading venue, broker, adviser, custodian, token issuer, lending service, and derivatives provider: different activities may have different requirements. Keep screenshots or copies of the platform’s claims and terms.
- Find the regulator’s official register yourself. Navigate to the regulator’s own website rather than following a link from the platform or its promoter. Search by both legal name and reference number. Check that the entry belongs to the same entity and that its permitted activities cover the service being advertised.
- Match contact details independently. Compare the register’s address, phone number, and other contact information with the site, emails, and people contacting you. If you need to reach the firm, use contact details obtained independently from the regulator’s record. A mismatched domain, phone number, or payment instruction is a reason to stop and investigate—not a detail to resolve through the promoter.
- Check the people behind the firm. Look up named principals, advisers, and salespeople in official systems where available. Compare identity and role details; a matching name alone may refer to someone else. In the United States, the SEC/CFTC alert points investors to Investor.gov, state securities regulators, CFTC disciplinary-history records, and the SEC’s Action Lookup for Individuals (SALI), which covers certain judgments and orders in SEC proceedings. See the agencies’ joint alert on fraudulent digital-asset and crypto trading websites.
- Test the investment and operating claims. Find out how the platform says it earns money, where customer assets are held, who controls withdrawals, what legal rights a customer receives, which fees and lockups apply, and what happens if the company fails. Read the terms and disclosures yourself; a registration claim does not establish that the platform’s answers are accurate.
- Compare evidence, not appearances. If you are considering more than one platform, use the same checklist for each. Mark anything you cannot confirm as unknown, not as a pass.
What to record when comparing platforms
| Check | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Entity and jurisdiction | Exact legal name, claimed country, and registered address |
| Regulatory record | Regulator, register entry, reference number, and permitted activities |
| Identity and contact | Whether official contact details match the platform’s details; named operators and any relevant disciplinary records |
| Customer arrangements | Disclosures about custody, withdrawals, fees, lockups, and customer rights |
| Performance claims | Whether the claims can be independently checked, rather than relying on the platform’s displayed balance or testimonials |
| Protections and complaints | What complaint or compensation protections are actually available for this entity, service, and customer |
Which official registers and records should I check?
There is no single worldwide register that verifies every crypto platform. The right place to check depends on where you live, which legal entity is offering the service, and what it does. The regulators below are official examples, not a complete country-by-country directory.

The FCA says some crypto products, including crypto CFDs, are regulated by it; that does not mean all crypto products are regulated or all crypto platforms must be FCA-registered.
- United States: The SEC/CFTC joint alert directs investors to Investor.gov, relevant state securities regulators, and CFTC disciplinary resources. The CFTC’s RED List identifies entities that appear to be operating in a capacity requiring CFTC registration but are not appropriately registered. SEC guidance applies in the context of securities laws and crypto-asset securities or securities-related services; whether a particular token or service is covered is a legal question. The SEC’s crypto-asset securities alert warns that crypto platforms may lack important investor protections.
- Nigeria: In a public notice published May 14, 2026, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission directed the public to its designated portals to verify platform and entity registration before investing in online investment schemes. The notice references the Investments and Securities Act, 2025.
For a jurisdiction not listed here, find the relevant regulator through an official government source and follow its own instructions. A regulator’s name or logo on a platform’s site is not a substitute for checking the regulator’s records directly.

How can I check if a crypto investment company is legitimate?
“Legitimate” can mean different things: a company may exist, have a regulatory record, or be permitted to perform a particular activity. Those are separate questions, and none alone proves that an investment is sound or that the company will return customer assets. Confirm the record, identity, service scope, contact details, and customer arrangements together.

- Unlicensed sellers, opaque jargon in place of a clear explanation, unsolicited offers, or pressure to act immediately.
- Suspiciously fast account growth or testimonials that cannot be independently verified.
- A polished website or app presented as proof of trustworthiness. The FCA warns that scammers can manipulate software to display false prices and investment returns.
One warning sign is enough to pause and verify independently. Do not send money simply because a promoter says an offer expires soon or shows an account balance growing on screen.
What does a registration record prove—and what does it not prove?
A register entry is one piece of evidence: check that it concerns the same legal entity and covers the activity being offered. It is not a safety certificate, proof of accurate performance claims, or a guarantee that customer funds are protected. Requirements depend on the jurisdiction, service, and instrument, so a result for one activity should not be generalized to every product a platform offers.

The FCA cautions: “But remember, just because a firm is registered, doesn’t mean you’ll have access to the FSCS or the Financial Ombudsman if something goes wrong.” Check the FCA’s consumer guidance for its UK-specific explanation. For the United States, the SEC has warned that crypto-asset securities platforms may lack important investor protections; the applicable rules depend on the particular asset and service. A listing in one regulator’s system does not establish protections in another country.

What should I do if I have already sent money?
- Preserve records. Save messages, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, account statements, screenshots, and copies of the website and terms. Keep the original files where possible.
- Report through official channels. Contact the relevant regulator or law-enforcement agency using contact details from its official site, not numbers or links sent by the platform or a stranger.
- Do not pay to “unlock” or recover funds. Be wary of anyone demanding an additional payment to release assets or promising guaranteed recovery. The SEC notes that recovering crypto scam losses can be difficult; see its guidance on crypto-asset securities scams.
