To use Android 16 desktop mode, first confirm that your exact phone or tablet supports both desktop windowing and external video output. Connect it to a compatible monitor using the manufacturer-documented method, then choose whether to mirror the device screen or start a separate desktop session. Add a keyboard and mouse or trackpad to work with apps and windows. These features are not available on every Android device, and the cable or adapter depends on the model.
Will your Android phone or tablet work with desktop mode?
Check the exact model and installed Android version before buying an adapter. Google says desktop windowing and connected-display behavior vary by device and are not available on all devices; it directs users to the manufacturer for model-specific information. A device may support one relevant capability without supporting the other, so verify both desktop windowing and wired video output.

Google announced general availability of connected-display support with Android 16 QPR3 on March 3, 2026. At that time, its announcement named Pixel 8, 9, and 10 series and a range of Samsung devices, including the S26 series, Fold7, Flip7, and Tab S11. This is the announcement-date list, not a guarantee that every model or regional variant is supported or a complete list of later additions. Check current manufacturer documentation for your exact device. Google’s Android Developers announcement provides the rollout context.
Google first described desktop windowing for compatible tablets in its June 10, 2025 Android 16 announcement. The later QPR3 announcement is the more relevant source for connected monitors. Read the original Android 16 announcement.

Connect the device to a monitor
Follow the instructions for your phone or tablet rather than assuming that any USB-C port sends video. Google’s consumer help page describes using a connected display but does not prescribe a universal port, cable, or adapter. The device must support the chosen video-output path, and the monitor must accept the corresponding input. Google’s connected-display help page explains the supported experience and its device-dependent behavior.
- Check the device documentation: confirm whether your exact model supports video output over a wired connection and whether its manufacturer specifies a cable, adapter, or dock.
- Check the monitor: identify an input that matches the documented output path, directly or through a compatible adapter.
- Connect using that documented path: if the monitor remains blank, check the device’s display or connected-device settings and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.
A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is relevant only when the device supports compatible wired video output and the monitor accepts HDMI. A USB-C hub with HDMI may suit a setup that also needs wired peripherals or charging, but compatibility and power behavior depend on the specific hardware. Neither accessory type is universal.

Choose mirroring or a separate desktop session
Depending on the device and settings, the monitor may show either a mirror of the device screen or a separate desktop session. Mirroring duplicates what is on the phone or tablet. A separate desktop session uses the monitor as its own workspace, where supported apps can appear in individual windows. Check the available display options on your device; the mode and its controls are model-dependent.

With Android 16 QPR3 connected-display support, Google described supported phones and foldables starting a new desktop session on the external display, with a taskbar and multiple freely resizable app windows. That description applies to supported devices, not every Android 16 device.

Connect a keyboard and mouse or trackpad
Use Bluetooth pairing or a wired connection according to the device, peripheral, and any hub instructions. Google documents keyboard and trackpad input for desktop windowing, and its connected-display announcement covers mouse and keyboard compatibility. A trackpad is optional; a mouse is another pointing-device option.
Google says that on a supported device connected to an external keyboard and trackpad, apps automatically open in Desktop windowing mode. Do not assume that exact behavior for every device or for every keyboard-and-mouse combination; check the controls available on your model.

Open and manage app windows
On a device that supports Desktop windowing, Google documents several ways to open an app in that mode:
- Drag the app’s top handle downward.
- Open the app header options and choose Desktop windowing.
- With a physical keyboard, press Action + Ctrl + Down arrow.
Once an app is in a window, drag its header bar to move it and drag a corner to resize it. Use the window controls to maximize or minimize it, and press Alt + Tab to switch between windows. These touch, pointer, and keyboard controls are documented for supported devices; labels or behavior can vary.

Troubleshoot common limitations
- Desktop windowing is missing: confirm model and software support with the manufacturer. Android 16 alone does not establish that a device has the feature.
- The monitor shows a duplicate screen: mirroring may be the available mode, or the device may offer a separate session only under particular settings or conditions. Check its display options and manufacturer guidance.
- The mouse stays within the connected display: Google says that when Desktop windowing is unsupported, the mouse moves within the connected display by default.
- A window will not move to another display: Google says windows cannot be dragged to a display that is running a full-screen app.
- The connection does not work: recheck that the device supports the specific video-output path and that the adapter and monitor input match. Google does not guarantee that one adapter works across devices.
For deeper technical context, Android’s AOSP desktop-windowing documentation distinguishes desktop-first and touch-first behavior. Its per-display desktop-windowing mechanism is described for Android 17 and higher, so it is not an Android 16 setup requirement.
