What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To verify a CPU before installing it, check the exact processor model against the exact motherboard’s CPU support list, confirm the socket matches, and make sure the installed BIOS version meets the board maker’s requirement. A matching socket or chipset family alone does not prove that a processor will boot.
What you need to identify first
Write down the processor’s full model name and the motherboard’s full model name. A family label such as “Core i7” or “Ryzen 7” is not specific enough: support can vary between processor generations and individual CPUs. Intel recommends identifying the processor and generation, then checking compatibility resources and the motherboard or system manufacturer’s information (Intel’s desktop processor upgrade information).

Find the motherboard model printed on the board, box, or system documentation. If the manufacturer distinguishes hardware revisions, identify yours as well and use the support page for that exact version. Do not infer compatibility from the chipset name alone.

Verify the socket and the exact CPU listing
Confirm the socket
Compare the CPU’s socket or package with the socket specified for the motherboard. Intel notes that processors designed for different socket types can differ electrically and mechanically, including their keying; a socket mismatch means the CPU is not compatible. Intel’s guidance is: “Make sure the socket of the processor that you choose is compatible with the existing socket of your motherboard” (Intel).

Search the motherboard maker’s CPU support list
Open the motherboard manufacturer’s product or support page and find its CPU support list, sometimes called a CPU QVL. Search for the processor’s complete model number and confirm that the entry applies to your board model and revision. ASUS explains that its CPU QVL lists devices verified for compatibility and stability, and provides instructions for locating the list (ASUS CPU QVL instructions; ASUS QVL lookup guide).
If the exact CPU is absent, or the entry is unclear, do not treat a matching socket as proof of support. Ask the motherboard manufacturer to confirm the specific CPU and board combination; Intel likewise directs users to the system or motherboard maker for supported upgrade options.

Check the BIOS version before installation
A CPU may be listed as supported only from a particular BIOS version onward. On the motherboard’s CPU support page, look for a field such as “Validated since BIOS” or a minimum BIOS version. Compare it with the version currently installed if you can determine it from the BIOS setup screen, system information, or the board’s documentation. ASUS shows how to find the “Validated since BIOS” field on its CPU support page (ASUS BIOS compatibility guidance).

Generation-specific example: Intel 600- and 700-series boards
Intel says 600- and 700-series desktop chipset motherboards require a BIOS update to boot 13th- and 14th-generation Intel Core desktop processors, and recommends updating before installing those processors. This applies to the generations and chipset series described in Intel’s notice, not to every Intel platform or to AMD systems; follow the instructions for your particular motherboard (Intel BIOS update requirements for 600- and 700-series chipsets).
If the new CPU cannot boot with the current BIOS
For a new build or an upgrade where the current BIOS cannot start the new processor, check the motherboard manual for a supported USB BIOS Flashback procedure. AMD notes that some compatible motherboards can update BIOS this way, including some models that can do so without a CPU installed (AMD guidance for a system that will not boot).

- Pure gaming performance with smooth 100+ FPS in the world's most popular games
- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 38 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards

Flashback is not available on every motherboard, and the procedure varies by board. Confirm the feature, required USB port, BIOS file and steps in the manual for your exact model. Do not assume that instructions for another board or manufacturer will work.
A practical pre-installation checklist
- Identify the parts: record the full CPU model and motherboard model, including hardware revision where relevant.
- Confirm the socket: compare the CPU package/socket with the motherboard specification. A mismatch rules out compatibility.
- Check the exact CPU support list: find the CPU on the manufacturer’s page for your board and revision. Contact the maker if it is missing or ambiguous.
- Compare BIOS versions: note the minimum or validated BIOS version in the CPU entry and compare it with the installed BIOS when known.
- Prepare any update: if required, follow the board maker’s update instructions while the old supported CPU is installed, if possible. Otherwise, confirm that the exact board supports a suitable CPU-less update method.
- Check other build requirements separately: CPU support confirmation does not establish cooler fit, power adequacy, or other component requirements.
Comparing two candidate CPUs for one motherboard
Use the motherboard maker’s support information to compare candidates, rather than assuming that CPUs from the same product family share support.

| Check | What to verify for each CPU |
|---|---|
| Exact model support | Whether the complete model appears in the motherboard’s CPU support list. |
| Socket/package | Whether the processor’s socket or package matches the motherboard specification. |
| BIOS requirement | The minimum or validated BIOS version, compared with the BIOS installed on the board. |
| Platform restrictions | Any additional limits or instructions stated by the motherboard manufacturer. |
This compatibility check does not establish which CPU is faster or a better value; those require product-specific performance and current-price information.
