To verify a collectible figure, identify its exact maker and release, compare the item and packaging with that release’s official references, and confirm any claimed number through the issuer. There is no universal counterfeit checklist or figure-numbering registry: labels, packaging, and numbering can vary by product, release, and region.
Start with the exact figure and release
Record the maker, figure or character name, product code, claimed edition, and release or rerelease date. Then find the maker’s official product listing, support guidance, or counterfeit notice for that specific release. A genuine earlier release and a genuine rerelease may not have identical codes or packaging.

Use photos of the actual item rather than relying only on stock images. Compare the box from several sides, the figure, the underside or back of the base, copyright text, barcode, included parts, and any certificate or numbered mark. A magnifier can help read small print or inspect molded marks, but it cannot authenticate an item by itself.

Look for consistency across the maker and brand logos, copyright information, product identifiers, package details, and release-specific markings. No single clue is conclusive. Good Smile Company cautions that not all bootlegs show its listed warning signs; it also notes that license-sticker appearance can vary by release and region, that license information may instead be printed on the box, and that some products have no separate label. An absent or different sticker alone does not prove a figure is fake.

Codes can change between releases. In Good Smile Company’s documented figma Joker example, the first edition, rerelease, and second rerelease share one JAN code, while the third rerelease uses another. That example applies to that figure only; it is not a general rule for other products. Compare a code with the maker’s reference for the claimed release rather than treating a mismatch against another release as automatic proof of a counterfeit.
Understand what an edition number means
An edition size is the announced quantity in a run. An individual edition number identifies one piece within that run when the product is numbered. They are different claims, and neither should be inferred from the other. Not every figure is individually numbered, and an edition number does not necessarily tell you the total production quantity.

Numbering practices differ by maker and product line. Sideshow says its Collector Edition products in most cases have an announced edition size and a unique edition number; it also says sixth-scale figures have no specific edition number unless otherwise stated. Follow the information for the exact item rather than assuming every “limited” or “collector” figure must have a number.
Mattel’s FAQ offers a separate, product-specific example: it defines Limited Edition Barbie dolls as those produced in quantities of 35,000 or fewer, while dolls made in greater quantities are called Collectible dolls. Mattel also says exact production numbers are never released publicly. This Barbie threshold is not a standard for collectible figures generally.

Check the number against its certificate or issuer
If a figure is supposed to have an individual number, compare the number on the item with its certificate or other accompanying record. Check that the product description and identifying details match, and use the issuer’s verification system if one exists. A number that resolves to a different item, model, or image is a reason to stop and ask the issuer.
Verification systems are issuer-specific. Upper Deck describes matching its serial-numbered hologram on an item to the certificate, then checking the hologram ID in its database. PSA/DNA describes comparing a certification record and image with the item and its identifying label. These are examples of how particular organizations verify their own records, not a registry for all collectible figures.

A certificate, hologram, sticker, or barcode can be detached, copied, or associated with the wrong item. Specialist collecting guidance also notes that an edition notation may be an authorized number, a dealer number, a fabricated limitation, or a copied number. Verify the relationship between the record and the physical item instead of treating the presence of paperwork or a security mark as proof.

What to do when the evidence is inconclusive
- Gather clear photos. Photograph the package front, back, and side, the actual figure, the copyright text on the base, and any certificate or numbered mark.
- Compare them with the maker’s release-specific references. Note any differences in product code, packaging, labels, included parts, or marks, while allowing for documented release and regional variation.
- Contact the maker or number issuer. Follow its current support instructions and provide the requested images and identifying details. Good Smile Company specifically requests package-front, back, and side photos, a photo of the item, and the base copyright text; it warns that it may be unable to assess an item if photos are insufficient.
- Describe the result accurately. A visual comparison is not formal authentication unless the maker, issuer, or a qualified authenticator has made that determination.
