An AI agent’s “booking confirmed” message is a claim, not proof that the airline, hotel, or other provider has a usable reservation. Check the provider’s own current booking record—or contact its support team using details found independently—and compare the record with what you approved.
How do I know the AI actually booked it?
Keep three separate questions in view: Was the agent authentic and authorized to act? Was payment or order processing completed? Does the service provider have the correct reservation on its current record? Evidence for one does not automatically answer the others.

Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes a cryptographic method for participating merchants to validate an AI agent’s identity and associated authorization. That is an agent-trust mechanism, not a travel reservation lookup; it cannot establish that an airline or hotel has created and is holding your booking. Visa’s protocol documentation describes its intended role.

How to check a booking with the provider
- Go to the provider independently. Open the airline, hotel, or other supplier’s official site or app yourself. Find its reservation-management page from the known official site rather than relying only on a link or phone number in the agent’s message.
- Enter the provider’s accepted details. Depending on the provider, you may need a record locator, confirmation code, ticket number, reservation number, and traveler or guest name. Formats and lookup rules differ. For example, American Airlines’ trip lookup accepts its six-letter confirmation code; the airline says some lookups can also use a 13-digit ticket number. These are American Airlines examples, not universal formats.
- Inspect the live record. Check the names, dates, route or property, relevant flight segments or stay details, and any status the provider displays. For a flight, confirm it appears in the airline’s own trip-management view. If payment or ticket details are absent or unclear, ask the airline what that means for your specific reservation.
- Compare it with what you authorized. Match the provider’s record against the itinerary or stay you approved and the booking receipt. A charge or payment notice can show that a payment-related event occurred; by itself, it does not prove that the provider has a valid reservation.
- Save the provider’s confirmation and reference details. Keep the supplier’s confirmation and relevant correspondence. Treat reservation codes as private: a code may enable access to or management of a booking. American Airlines describes its confirmation code as a way for passengers to manage a reservation and restricts some third-party access in its conditions of carriage. Do not publish codes or personal details.
Is a confirmation number proof?
A confirmation or record locator is useful because it can let you find a record with the provider that issued or accepts it. But the number alone does not show that the displayed reservation is current, correctly ticketed, or ultimately fulfilled. Use it to retrieve the provider’s live record and check the details and status there.

| Agent completion message or tool response | The agent reports that it completed a step. | That the provider created and still holds the requested reservation. BookingTruth’s article is vendor-authored; its failure-mode claims are not independently substantiated here. |
| Confirmation or record locator | A credential for finding or managing a record where the provider accepts it. | That the record is current, correctly ticketed, or fulfilled; inspect the provider’s record. American Airlines’ lookup illustrates a provider-specific lookup. |
| Airline ticket number | American Airlines says its 13-digit ticket number identifies a reservation. | A universal ticket-number format, or evidence for a hotel or other provider. American Airlines’ lookup gives its own example. |
| Card statement or payment notice | A payment-related event may have occurred. | That a service provider has a reservation or that it remains active. |
| Cryptographic agent signature or protocol data | For merchants using Visa’s protocol, it can support validation of agent identity and signed intent under the protocol checks. Visa describes the mechanism. | That a travel provider has a booking on its system. |
| Provider’s current lookup or direct confirmation | The provider can locate a record and report its current details or status. | A guarantee against later schedule changes or cancellation. |
How can I check if my flight is really ticketed?
Start with the airline’s own trip-management page and look up the booking using details it accepts. Verify the traveler, dates, route, and displayed status. A reservation code and a ticket number are different identifiers, and the formats and meanings vary by airline. If the airline’s record does not show ticket details or leaves the status unclear, contact the airline directly and ask it to check whether the ticket has been issued for your reservation.
American Airlines provides one concrete example: its six-letter confirmation code can be used to manage a trip, and it accepts a 13-digit ticket number for some lookups. Those details apply to that airline and should not be assumed for another carrier. American Airlines trip lookup and its reservations FAQ explain its own process.
What if the hotel or airline cannot find the reservation?
- Contact the provider through support details found on its official site or app, not solely through the agent’s message. Give the reference details and ask it to search and state the booking’s status.
- Contact the booking seller as well, using an independently sourced channel. Ask for written confirmation or correction and keep the agent conversation, receipt, and provider correspondence.
- Do not assume the service is secured until the provider can locate the booking or gives authoritative confirmation. The right remedy and timing depend on the provider, booking terms, and where you live.
There is no universal booking-status definition or one lookup procedure established across airlines, hotels, rental cars, and online travel agencies. Follow the particular provider’s official process; if its self-service lookup fails or leaves a discrepancy, ask its support team to verify the live record.

Keep the supplier’s confirmation and reference details somewhere secure, and monitor provider notices for changes. A record you verified today is not a promise that the booking cannot later change or be cancelled, so check again close to travel when practical.

Consumer rights and complaint routes depend on jurisdiction and booking terms. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority states that “UK consumer law applies whether decisions are made by people or by AI” in guidance published on 9 March 2026. That statement is UK-specific, not global legal advice. Read the CMA’s guidance.
