Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteValue the company on the cash it can sustainably generate—not on an assumed “AI premium.” Use a telecom-informed discounted cash flow (DCF) as the primary analysis, cross-check it against genuinely comparable businesses, and model AI services as distinct cash-flow drivers only where disclosures support that separation. Contract durability, margins, compute and delivery costs, and required investment determine whether recurring AI revenue adds value.
Start by defining what is being valued
Before forecasting, specify whether the subject is a listed operator, private company, business unit, or individual asset. Record the geography, reporting period, currency, valuation date, and purpose: a going-concern estimate, transaction analysis, or another valuation. Also be clear whether the answer sought is enterprise value (EV) or equity value.

These boundaries matter because a fiber or tower asset has a different revenue and capital structure from a service-heavy operator. A comparison is useful only if those differences are made explicit.
Separate telecom and AI economics where the disclosures allow
Map reported revenue and costs into the most useful available categories, such as consumer and enterprise connectivity, wholesale, infrastructure, digital services, and AI-enabled services. Start with the company’s reported segment definitions; reconcile adjusted or non-GAAP measures to reported figures where possible.
#1 Best Overall
A management label is not proof that revenue is recurring, incremental, or profitable. If AI is bundled into a broader cloud, communications, or managed-services line and the company does not disclose its contribution, say that the AI revenue cannot be isolated from public disclosure. Do not force an allocation.
| Revenue stream | What to establish | Valuation implication |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity and wholesale | Customer or subscriber trends, pricing or revenue per user, churn, operating costs, and network investment. | Forecast the revenue and cash costs together; network maintenance and expansion can absorb cash even when revenue is predictable. |
| Contracted AI or digital subscription | Distinct recurring fee, contract term, minimum commitment, renewal or cancellation terms, retention, and service margin. | Include only the supported contract economics and the costs of delivery, support, and customer retention. |
| Usage-based AI or network service | Paying usage, pricing mechanics, customer adoption, usage variability, and compute or network costs. | Forecast usage and unit economics rather than treating a potential market or pipeline as booked recurring revenue. |
| Implementation, resale, hardware, or pass-through | Whether the company recognizes project work, resale, or pass-through charges separately, and what costs accompany them. | Do not treat these amounts as subscription revenue unless disclosure supports that classification; assess their margins and cash conversion on their own terms. |
These categories are an analytical way to reconstruct economics, not a claim that every operator reports them separately. If the necessary detail is absent, make the limitation visible instead of manufacturing segment precision.
Test the quality of recurring revenue
“Recurring” describes a billing pattern, not a guarantee that revenue will continue or produce attractive cash flow. For each material stream, examine contract duration, minimum commitments, renewal and cancellation rights, renewal evidence, customer concentration, net expansion, churn, and the difference between recognized revenue and a booked or run-rate figure.

- Retention: Look for actual renewal and churn evidence, not just the number of customers currently under contract.
- Concentration: Determine whether a small number of customers account for a material share of revenue or expected renewals.
- Margin after delivery: Include implementation, integration, support, licensing, security, and compute costs where relevant.
- Customer economics: Consider acquisition and retention costs as well as the cost of serving the customer over the contract life.
- AI contract mechanics: Check whether AI carries a distinct fee or is bundled into an existing service; identify who pays for models, compute, and licenses, and whether service performance affects renewal.
A 2020 B2B telecom-sector paper discusses annual recurring revenue (ARR), customer value, and retention or upsell as useful analytical measures. It is a conceptual reference, not a source for current trading multiples or a universal reporting standard: Bryan, Garnier & Co.’s telecom paper.
Build a telecom-informed DCF
A DCF makes the operating assumptions visible: forecast free cash flow over an explicit period, discount those cash flows, and estimate the present value of cash flows beyond the forecast period. In a telecom business, the forecast should connect customer and network drivers to cash requirements rather than extrapolate revenue alone.
- Forecast core telecom drivers. Model subscriber or customer growth, churn, pricing or revenue per user, acquisition costs, operating costs, and expected margins. Include network maintenance and expansion and, where relevant, spectrum or licensing requirements.
- Forecast AI service economics separately when possible. Use supported assumptions for paid adoption, usage, renewals, service margins, delivery costs, and investment needed to provide the service. If the company does not disclose a separable AI contribution, do not present a precise AI-only forecast as reported fact.
- Model savings separately from new revenue. Treat automation or other cost reductions as an operating benefit only to the extent they are realized or credibly supported. Distinguish completed savings from announced plans, and account for the investment and implementation costs needed to obtain them.
- Build downside, base, and upside cases. Vary adoption, pricing, renewal, compute costs, and competitive response. Test discount rate, terminal growth, and terminal margin assumptions because long-dated value can be sensitive to them.
- Check cash conversion. Include working capital, taxes, capital expenditure, and other cash-flow needs, not just revenue and EBITDA. Keep financing claims and operating cash flow conceptually separate when calculating EV.
Verizon’s SEC filing describes a wireless-license DCF example that considers subscriber growth, churn, revenue per user, capital investment, acquisition costs, operating costs, and resulting EBITDA margins. It is useful as a map of relevant telecom inputs, not as a source of current discount rates or market assumptions: Verizon SEC filing.

Cross-check the result against comparable businesses
Choose public-company peers or transactions with similar geography, customer mix, growth, network ownership, leverage, regulation, and service mix. Explain why each belongs in the set. A broad “telecom” label is not enough if one company owns capital-intensive network assets and another primarily sells software or managed services.

| DCF | Tests the value implied by the company’s own forecast cash flows and assumptions. | Forecast, discount-rate, and terminal assumptions can materially affect long-range value. |
| EV/EBITDA | Provides a market-based cross-check against businesses with comparable operating economics. | Differences in capital intensity, spectrum, infrastructure ownership, leverage, and accounting definitions can make headline multiples misleading. |
| Revenue or cash-flow comparison | Can offer another reference point when it fits the business and the available data. | Revenue alone does not reveal margins or cash conversion; use the measure only with a clear rationale. |
Lumen’s 2025 annual report describes both discounted-cash-flow and market approaches, including the use of publicly traded companies with comparable services, and notes that the appropriate approach depends on the facts and circumstances: Lumen annual report. Use comparable-company analysis as a reasonableness check, not as a substitute for explaining the target’s own economics.
The cited 2020 sector paper is dated, and the company filings describe methods rather than a current universal benchmark. The sources here do not establish one current EV/EBITDA multiple for a hybrid telecom and AI-services company. Any selected peer range must be built from a stated valuation date and justified against the target’s mix, growth, risk, and capital requirements.

Ask what the AI evidence actually supports
AI can affect both revenue and costs. McKinsey describes potential operator opportunities including differentiated services and network APIs that expose network capabilities to developers and enterprises for possible usage-based monetization. That is a strategic framework, not proof that a particular operator has turned those opportunities into revenue: McKinsey’s analysis of AI-driven telecom networks.
Bandwidth’s September 2026 investor presentation describes its AI voice orchestration platform and characterizes it as supporting accelerating software-services revenue. This is an example of company-reported positioning; it does not isolate revenue as purely AI-derived or establish that a software-company multiple is appropriate: Bandwidth investor presentation.
For a target company, look for evidence of paying customers, distinct contract economics, adoption, renewal, realized cost reductions, and separately disclosed financial contribution. Treat a strategic announcement, opportunity pipeline, or broad digital-services growth figure as context—not as measured AI cash flow—unless the company provides enough detail to connect it to the model.

Use sector performance as context, not as a valuation input
Boston Consulting Group reports about 9% median annualized total shareholder return for 63 telcos over 2021–2025 and $616 billion in net value creation for the study’s telcos over those five years. These are historical, aggregate sector figures in BCG’s 2026 report, not an expected return, a company-specific forecast, or an estimate of AI’s causal effect on value: BCG’s 2026 analysis of telcos in the AI era.
Convert enterprise value to equity value
Once EV is established, account for net debt and other relevant claims or assets to derive equity value. Depending on the company and the valuation method, examine leases, pensions, minority interests, spectrum obligations, and non-operating assets. If converting the result to a per-share figure, state the share count and its date.
No target company or financial statements are specified here, so a fair value, price target, peer set, or numerical multiple cannot be responsibly calculated. For an actual valuation, the conclusion should follow from the target’s disclosed cash flows and risks, with any unresolved AI revenue or cost allocation stated plainly.
