Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A cloud security finding is not proof that an attacker can exploit a particular resource. To validate it, confirm that the affected asset and condition exist now, determine whether an attacker can reach and exercise that condition, and assess what they could access or change if they succeeded. Record what the evidence confirms, rules out, and leaves unresolved.
This distinction matters for both vulnerability and cloud-configuration alerts. A severe CVE on an isolated, uninstalled component is a different decision from a moderate issue on an internet-reachable workload with access to sensitive data. The goal is a defensible, current assessment rather than a reflexive acceptance or dismissal of a scanner label.

What “exploitable” means for a cloud finding
Validation is an environment-specific assessment, not a verdict based on a severity label or a vulnerability’s reputation. Three questions need separate answers:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Is the affected asset and condition present? The resource, software component, configuration, or identity described by the finding must exist in the current environment.
- Can an attacker reach and exercise it? There must be a plausible path from an attacker-controlled starting point to the relevant service, permission, or vulnerable component, with the required conditions in place.
- What could happen if the path works? Assess reachable data, workloads, permissions, and possible effects on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
A finding can be serious without being exploitable on the specific resource you are reviewing. Conversely, a less prominent finding may matter if it connects an accessible starting point to sensitive data or powerful permissions. Severity helps prioritize investigation; it does not replace these checks.

Do not collapse “the scanner detected a condition,” “the condition is reachable,” and “the condition would have material impact” into one statement. Keep each conclusion tied to evidence and an observation time.
Follow a six-step validation workflow
Start with current, low-risk evidence: inventory, configuration, access policies, vulnerability records, and provider risk graphs. Keep scanner metadata, cloud control-plane state, and workload state distinct. They describe different parts of the picture and may not be equally current or complete.
1. Identify the exact finding and resource
Capture enough context to determine precisely what the alert concerns and whether it still applies. Record:
Recommended Free Tools
- Finding identifier and source, including the provider or security service.
- Cloud account or subscription, region, and resource identifier.
- Current finding status and the time the observation was made.
- The software component, configuration, or identity named in the finding.
- Any listed resource traits, remediation details, or relationships relevant to the alert.
Reconcile the finding with current inventory. A resource may have been removed, replaced, moved, or changed since the alert was observed. Treat a stale observation differently from a current condition: an old finding may explain what a scanner saw at that time, but it cannot by itself establish the resource’s present state.
Check for duplicate representations of the same asset, such as a container image finding and a running task, or a template finding and a deployed instance. Note the exact deployment location, not merely the image repository or source account. Verify that the account and region in the alert match the asset you are examining; cross-account and cross-region copies can have different policies and routes.
AWS exposure review documentation describes region, status, traits, resources, and remediation details as investigation context; findings can be reviewed in the console and through the documented API. Use the available finding details to anchor the investigation, then verify the asset against live inventory rather than assuming the alert snapshot is still accurate.
2. Translate the alert into a testable condition
Rewrite the finding as a concrete statement that evidence can confirm or refute. Examples include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- A particular affected package version is installed on the deployed asset.
- A storage policy grants access beyond the intended principals.
- A workload can be reached through a specific network route.
- An identity can assume a role or access a target resource.
Then collect evidence from the layer that can establish that claim. A cloud configuration record may show policy state; workload inventory may show installed software; identity and trust policies may show what an account can do. A scanner result is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the underlying state. AWS says Inspector scans supported EC2 instances, ECR container images, and Lambda functions for software vulnerabilities and unintended network exposure. Confirm scan coverage and current asset state for the resource you are investigating; the fact that a service generates findings does not guarantee that every deployment path has been tested.
Define what would count as evidence for and against the condition before collecting it. For a package issue, that could be an installed-version record tied to a running instance or function. For a policy issue, it could be the effective resource policy plus the identity context that would make the external principal eligible. For a route issue, identify the expected source, destination, protocol, and port. This prevents a broad control such as “the security group is open” from being mistaken for proof of a usable exploit path.

Check freshness and scope on every artifact. An image scan may describe a tag that has since been rebuilt; an infrastructure template may not reflect an emergency console change; and a workload inventory may lag an autoscaling replacement. Preserve the raw finding and the newer evidence together so a reviewer can see why the conclusion changed.
3. Reconstruct the attacker’s reachability path
Ask what source could reach the affected service, over which protocol and port, through which route, and subject to which controls. Consider public and internal paths separately. A resource need not be directly internet-facing to be reachable from another compromised workload or identity inside the environment.
Trace the path through the controls and services that actually apply, such as security groups or access-control lists, load balancers, gateways, firewalls, service endpoints, and network segmentation. A permissive rule is a relevant signal, but by itself it does not establish end-to-end reachability. Likewise, a public address does not on its own demonstrate that the vulnerable service is exposed through a usable path.
Describe the path in an ordered form: source, name-resolution or routing step, intermediary service, destination interface, protocol and port, and each allow or deny decision. Include authentication or application-layer gates that occur after a network connection. A reachable port may expose only a health endpoint, while the vulnerable administrative function may require a separate listener, header, or identity. Conversely, an internal service endpoint can provide a path that public scans never see.
Check both ingress and egress assumptions. Some exploitation chains require the target to call an attacker-controlled endpoint, retrieve a package, or contact a metadata service. Egress firewalls, proxy settings, endpoint policies, and service-specific restrictions can break such a chain even when inbound reachability appears open.
AWS Security Hub exposure findings correlate signals to assess configuration, network reachability, and resource relationships, and can present a potential attack path. AWS describes its exposure graph as an interactive view of how potential attackers could exploit an identified exposure; graph details are available in the console. Microsoft Defender for Cloud recommendations can include internet exposure, lateral movement, and attack-path context. Use these views to identify a path to verify, not as a substitute for confirming that its components and controls reflect current state.
4. Trace identity, trust, and effective permissions
For an identity or privilege finding, identify the starting principal and the resource it could reach. Examine effective permissions, relevant trust policies, role-assumption conditions, and downstream access. The question is whether the proposed chain is possible from that starting point under current policy and resource state—not whether a permission appears somewhere in isolation.
Build the chain in order: starting principal, permitted transition or role assumption, resulting permissions, and target resource. Check each link against the relevant trust and access conditions. If a proposed path depends on a permission or trust relationship that is absent, record that specific missing precondition. If the path reaches another principal or resource, continue tracing until you can describe the likely boundary of access.
Distinguish a permission statement from effective permission. An identity policy may grant an action while a resource policy, permissions boundary, session policy, organization control, explicit deny, or conditional requirement blocks it. Conditions based on source account, network, tags, or multifactor authentication can be decisive. Conversely, a broad role trust policy may allow assumption only after the attacker obtains credentials from an earlier step in the chain.

For cross-account access, document both sides of the relationship and the external identifier or condition required. For workload identities, tie the principal to the service account, task, function, or instance that can actually obtain credentials. Do not infer access merely because two resources share an account or network.

AWS’s attack-path graph depicts resources and the permissions connecting them. Its impact assessment considers effective permissions and resources an attacker could reach through privilege escalation. Such a graph can make a plausible chain easier to see, but the chain still needs to be interpreted against the current state of the affected environment.
5. Confirm CVE conditions and exploitation context
For a vulnerability finding, establish the product, component, version, and deployment location on the affected resource. Check the vendor’s affected-version and remediation guidance against that evidence. A CVE identifier or severity score alone does not confirm that the affected version is installed on the resource, that the vulnerable component is reachable, or that the conditions for exploitation are present.
Resolve version ambiguity carefully. Distribution backports can contain a fix while retaining an upstream-looking version string, and a vulnerable package in an image layer may not be present in the running process. Confirm the operating-system package status, application dependency actually loaded by the service, and whether a mitigation changes the vulnerable code path. If the asset is ephemeral, connect the evidence to the currently deployed revision rather than a historical build.
Check the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog to see whether the vulnerability is known to have been exploited in the wild. CISA describes KEV as an authoritative source for known exploited vulnerabilities and recommends using the catalog as an input to vulnerability-management prioritization. A catalog match is threat-context evidence: it indicates known exploitation activity beyond your environment, not proof that an individual resource in your environment can be exploited.
Also record vendor workarounds, required authentication, exploit prerequisites, and whether exploitation is remote or local. These details help connect the advisory to the reachability and identity work in the earlier steps. Absence from KEV does not demonstrate safety, just as inclusion does not demonstrate a usable path in your account.
AWS Prescriptive Guidance says Amazon Inspector’s finding score correlates CVSS base information with network reachability and exploitability data. Treat that composite score as a prioritization input, then inspect the underlying component, reachability, and other conditions. AWS advises investigating and prioritizing critical and high findings; their priority still does not establish a resource-specific exploit path.
6. Assess likely impact and make a disposition
Follow the confirmed or plausible path to the data and services an attacker could affect. Determine whether it could expose sensitive information, enable privilege escalation, alter or destroy resources, or disrupt availability. Impact depends on what the path reaches and what actions the attacker’s effective permissions allow—not only on the vulnerability or configuration in isolation.
Inventory the boundary reached by the path: databases, object stores, secrets, queues, control-plane APIs, production workloads, and recovery systems. Separate direct access from access that would require another unverified transition. Note data sensitivity and operational criticality, but do not claim impact that has not been demonstrated by permissions or application behavior.

AWS describes exposure severity in terms of likelihood and impact. Its likelihood factors include awareness, ease of discovery, ease of exploitation, and likelihood of exploitation; impact includes potential loss and effective permissions. Microsoft Defender for Cloud likewise describes recommendation risk in terms of exploitability and business impact with environmental context. Use these as assessment dimensions, not as a replacement for resource-specific evidence.
Choose one of three practical dispositions:
- Confirmed exploitable: The material condition is present, a plausible attacker path to exercise it is established, and the likely affected resources or actions are understood.
- Condition absent or not applicable: Evidence shows that a necessary material precondition does not hold—for example, the affected component is not present on the current asset.
- Unresolved: Available evidence does not establish whether a material precondition, path, or impact is present.
This is a practical working taxonomy, not a universal provider-defined classification. Reserve “not exploitable” for cases where the material preconditions have actually been checked and evidence shows they do not hold. If a relevant part of the chain remains unknown, document the uncertainty rather than converting it into a negative result.
Common validation pitfalls
- Treating severity as exploitability: A critical score can identify urgency but cannot prove the component, route, or permission chain exists.
- Trusting a stale snapshot: Recheck the current resource, deployment revision, policy, and route after a finding is generated.
- Equating an open rule with exposure: Verify the complete path, listener, protocol, port, gateway, and application control.
- Stopping at a direct permission: Evaluate trust policies, explicit denies, boundaries, conditions, and the credentials available to the starting principal.
- Assuming scanner coverage is universal: Confirm supported resource types, scan timing, inventory completeness, and whether the running asset is the scanned asset.
- Using KEV as a local verdict: Catalog status informs urgency but does not establish your resource’s version, reachability, or impact.
- Testing destructively in production: Active validation needs authorization, scope, a non-destructive plan, and service-owner coordination.
- Calling uncertainty “not exploitable”: If a material link is unknown, use the unresolved disposition and identify the next evidence needed.
Compare evidence coverage, not just severity labels
Cloud tools answer different questions. When comparing provider-native services or other authorized sources, check which resource types they cover, how current their evidence is, and whether they expose the network, identity, attack-path, and impact details needed for this finding. Capabilities can depend on product, plan, resource, and configuration; verify coverage in the environment being assessed.
| Evidence source | What it can contribute | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Security Hub exposure findings | Correlated signals from Security Hub CSPM, Inspector, GuardDuty, Macie, and other services; configuration, network reachability, resource relationships, and potential attack paths. | That every path or condition is current and exploitable on the individual resource. AWS documents exposure graph details as console-only. |
| Amazon Inspector | Vulnerability and unintended network-exposure findings for supported EC2 instances, ECR container images, and Lambda functions. | That all assets or deployment paths are covered, or that a finding alone proves a usable attacker path. Confirm actual scan coverage and asset state. |
| Microsoft Defender for Cloud recommendations | Affected-resource details and contextual factors such as internet exposure, sensitive data, lateral movement, and attack paths. | A fully evaluated risk when prerequisite coverage is absent. Microsoft notes that risk levels may be unevaluated in that situation. |
| CISA KEV Catalog | Whether a vulnerability is listed as known to have been exploited in the wild; useful context for prioritization. | Whether the affected component is present, reachable, or exploitable in a specific organization’s environment. |
For any source, record its observation time and scope alongside the evidence. A finding can be useful even when it is incomplete: it may identify the resource, condition, or path worth checking next. The validation record should make clear which part came from the tool and which part you independently confirmed.
When selecting a service for ongoing work, compare finding lifecycle and API access as well as detection features. Useful questions include whether analysts can retrieve the original traits and remediation links, whether status changes are recorded, whether exposure relationships are visible, and whether results integrate with the organization’s case-management process. Do not assume that a capability shown in one product plan or resource type is available everywhere.
Keep validation safe and authorized
Begin with passive evidence: cloud inventory, configuration, access policies, vulnerability inventory, and provider risk graphs. These checks can often establish whether a resource or condition exists without exercising an exploit.
If passive evidence cannot answer the question, active testing requires explicit authorization, a bounded scope, a non-destructive test plan, and coordination with service owners. Prefer a controlled or staging environment when it can reproduce the relevant condition. Do not run exploit code against a production workload merely to settle a scanner finding. There is no single cross-cloud active-testing procedure established here for this exact question, so operational approvals and safeguards must come from the organization’s own policies and service owners.
Define stop conditions before any approved active check, including error thresholds, time limits, affected resource identifiers, and who can halt the test. Preserve logs and notify owners of expected traffic. If the condition cannot be reproduced safely, report the limitation rather than overstating certainty.

Best Value
- Finding identity: identifier, source, resource, account or subscription, region, status, and observation time.
- Condition evidence: the exact component, configuration, or identity state checked, where that evidence came from, and when it was observed.
- Path evidence: attacker starting point, network route or permission chain considered, relevant controls, and any missing or confirmed link.
- Impact evidence: reachable data or services and the actions available along the path.
- Disposition and assumptions: confirmed exploitable, condition absent/not applicable, or unresolved; list what remains unknown rather than implying it was tested.
- Reassessment trigger: changes to the resource, policy, route, package, or threat intelligence that could change the decision.
Attach configuration excerpts, inventory identifiers, policy versions, graph captures where permitted, and links to vendor guidance. Mark evidence that is inferred rather than directly observed. A concise chain of claims and evidence is more useful than an unannotated export containing hundreds of unrelated findings.
Reassess when one of those material conditions changes. A validation is a conclusion about observed state and documented assumptions, not a permanent guarantee about a resource that may later be reconfigured or redeployed.
Practical decision checklist
Before closing a finding, ask:
- Do the account, region, resource, deployment revision, and observation time match the asset under review?
- Is the named software, configuration, or identity condition present now?
- What attacker-controlled source could start the chain?
- Which route, protocol, port, trust relationship, and policy decisions connect that source to the condition?
- Are there explicit denies, boundaries, authentication requirements, segmentation controls, or missing components that break the chain?
- What sensitive data, critical workload, or control-plane action is reachable if every confirmed link is used?
- Which facts are confirmed, which are absent, and which remain unknown?
- What change would trigger a new assessment?
If these questions cannot be answered with current evidence, the responsible conclusion is unresolved with a clearly defined follow-up, not an unsupported assurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a critical CVE prove that my cloud resource is exploitable?
No. Confirm the exact product, component, version, deployment location, required prerequisites, and attacker reachability. CISA KEV status can increase urgency because it reflects exploitation elsewhere, but it does not prove that your individual resource is reachable or exploitable.
Is an internet-facing resource automatically exploitable?
No. Internet exposure is one reachability signal. Verify the listener, protocol and port, routing, load balancer or gateway behavior, firewall and access controls, authentication, and whether the vulnerable function is actually exposed.
What evidence should I collect first?
Start with passive evidence: current inventory, finding metadata, cloud configuration, workload software inventory, access and trust policies, vulnerability records, and provider attack-path or risk views. Record scope and observation time for each item.
How do I validate an identity or privilege finding?
Start with the principal, then trace role assumptions or other transitions, effective permissions, trust policies, conditions, explicit denies, and downstream resources. A permission statement in isolation is not proof of an effective path.
What does a CISA KEV listing tell me?
It tells you that CISA lists the vulnerability as known to have been exploited in the wild. CISA recommends KEV as an input to vulnerability-management prioritization. It does not establish that your affected component is installed, reachable, or exploitable.
Can I run exploit code to settle the question?
Only with explicit authorization, bounded scope, a non-destructive plan, and service-owner coordination. Prefer a controlled or staging environment when it reproduces the condition. Do not use production exploitation as a routine way to validate a scanner alert.
When is it appropriate to mark a finding “not exploitable”?
Use that conclusion only when the material preconditions have been checked and evidence shows that a necessary condition is absent or not applicable. If a material link or impact remains unknown, classify the result as unresolved instead.
Why might a provider risk level be unevaluated?
Microsoft Defender for Cloud notes that risk levels may be unevaluated when prerequisite coverage is absent. Treat that as a coverage limitation and gather the missing resource, configuration, network, or identity evidence rather than assuming either safety or exploitation.
The Bottom Line
Validate a cloud finding in three separate passes: prove that the named asset and condition exist, trace a realistic attacker path through network and identity controls, and determine the data or actions that path could reach. Use provider graphs, Inspector, Defender for Cloud, and CISA KEV as evidence and prioritization context—not as substitutes for current, resource-specific checks. Preserve assumptions, classify the result as confirmed, absent/not applicable, or unresolved, and reassess whenever the resource, policy, route, package, or threat context changes.
