For a Tkinter Entry, register a Python callback and set it as validatecommand. Choose validate="key" to accept or reject each edit before it appears, or a focus mode such as "focusout" to check the field after editing. In either case, validate required fields and application rules again when the user submits the form.
Use a registered callback to validate an Entry
Tkinter is Python’s standard interface to Tcl/Tk, and Entry is its single-line editable text widget. The Python Tkinter documentation describes an Entry as displaying one line of text that the user can edit. Its validate and validatecommand options provide the built-in edit-validation hook.
Register the Python function with the widget’s register() method, then give Tk the registered command and a substitution such as %P. That substitution supplies the proposed value: the text the Entry would contain if the edit were accepted. Return a boolean-compatible result. The Tk Entry manual documents the validation modes and substitutions.
Choose when validation should happen
| Need | Mechanism | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Reject an invalid edit immediately | validate="key" and inspect %P |
Allow useful intermediate states, such as an empty field, so users can clear or replace a value. |
| Let users finish typing before checking | validate="focusout" or another focus mode |
Give the user clear feedback and still check the value in the submit handler. |
| Check requiredness, numeric conversion, range or related fields | Read .get() in the submit handler |
This is the appropriate place for rules about what the value means, not just which characters it contains. |
Validate a multiline Text widget |
Use an appropriate event or check on submission | Do not assume Entry’s validate option works identically for other widgets. |
With validate="key", Tk checks a proposed insertion or deletion before applying it; if prevalidation fails, the edit is rejected. Focus validation instead checks around focus changes, which can be more comfortable when a field may be temporarily incomplete.

Example: accept whole-number characters while editing
This example allows the Entry to be empty while the user edits it, then rejects non-decimal characters. It uses an explicit messagebox import for the submit-time error:
import tkinter as tk
from tkinter import messagebox, ttk
root = tk.Tk()
def is_integer_candidate(candidate: str) -> bool:
# Let the user clear the field or replace its contents in stages.
return candidate == "" or candidate.isdecimal()
validate_integer = (root.register(is_integer_candidate), "%P")
amount = ttk.Entry(
root,
validate="key",
validatecommand=validate_integer,
)
amount.pack(padx=12, pady=12)
def submit() -> None:
value = amount.get()
if not value:
messagebox.showerror("Invalid input", "Enter a whole number.")
return
number = int(value)
# Apply any required range or application-specific checks here.
print(number)
ttk.Button(root, text="Submit", command=submit).pack(pady=(0, 12))
root.mainloop()
str.isdecimal() accepts decimal characters beyond ASCII digits. If the application requires only ASCII 0 through 9, replace the callback’s return expression with candidate == "" or all("0" <= ch <= "9" for ch in candidate).

Keep edit checks separate from form rules
A character filter only determines whether the current text is allowed. It does not make a value required, ensure it falls within an allowed range, or establish that it agrees with another field. In the submit handler, read the current value with .get(), check that it is present, convert it as needed, and enforce range and cross-field rules before using it.
For example, an empty string is useful as an editing state even if the completed form requires a number. Allowing that state in the callback lets a user clear a value and type a replacement; the submit handler can then report that the field is required.
Avoid validation callback failures
- Register the function: Tk expects a Tcl callback command. Use
register()and pass the returned command with substitutions such as%P; do not pass the bare Python function as the validation command. - Return a boolean-compatible value: Keep the callback simple and deterministic. An exception or invalid result can disable validation for a themed
ttk.Entry, as documented in the ttk::entry manual. - Do not change the same Entry inside its validation callback: The classic Tk
Entrycan turn validation off if the validation or invalidation callback modifies the widget’s value. The themed widget also has documented behavior for callback errors and invalid results. - Do not reject every empty candidate in key validation: Users may need to erase the existing text before entering a replacement. Allow the intermediate state if appropriate and enforce requiredness on submission.
- Do not confuse numeric-looking text with a valid application value: Conversion, range limits and business rules belong in the form-level check.
The classic and themed widgets are both available; choose tk.Entry or ttk.Entry according to the styling your application needs. Their validation failure behavior is not identical, so consult the corresponding manual when handling version-specific cases.
Check the Tcl/Tk version in your Python installation
The Python documentation lists Tcl/Tk 8.5.12 as the minimum supported version and says the official Python binary release bundles Tcl/Tk 8.6. The Tk manuals linked above document Tk 8.7, so behavior can depend on the runtime installed on a particular computer. Run python -m tkinter to open the Tkinter test window and inspect the Tcl/Tk version reported there. The Python documentation notes that the command also helps confirm that Tkinter is installed.
