Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Reject an invalid move without mutating shared state, and publish only a transition the authority has accepted.
What should be authoritative?
Treat the client message as an intent, not as proof that a move happened. A client can send an action such as “move this piece from A to B,” but it should not decide whose turn it is, whether the action is legal, what it captures, or whether the game has ended. Unity describes this server-side approach as modeling full game state on a backend to enforce rules and validation. Unity Cloud Code: Game state management.

Derive the acting player’s seat from the authenticated session or server-maintained game membership. Do not let a request choose an arbitrary player identity. Authentication details depend on your application; the essential rule is that the server, not the submitted move, establishes who is acting.

- Load the game and confirm its phase. Reject requests for nonexistent games or games that are not accepting moves, such as a finished game.
- Check permission and turn. Confirm the player belongs to this game and may act now. In a sequential game, verify that player owns the current turn. Unity’s chess example includes checking whose turn it is. Unity Cloud Code: Game state management.
- Validate the action’s shape and references. Check required fields, coordinate or cell bounds, piece identifiers, and whether the referenced piece or location matches the current board. Unity’s example verifies that the submitted starting location contains the expected piece.
- Ask the rules engine whether the action is legal in this position. Check game-specific constraints, not just whether the request is syntactically valid. For chess, that means determining whether this piece can legally move to the destination in the current position.
- Derive consequences from trusted state. Compute captures, resource changes, turn advancement, and win or draw conditions on the authoritative side. Do not accept a client-reported capture, score, or checkmate as fact.
- Commit and publish only an accepted transition. If any check fails, leave shared state unchanged and return a rejection. If all checks pass, store the next state and then notify clients of the accepted result.
Asmodee describes the rules engine as “self-defensive”: it should check incoming actions and refuse illegal ones. Asmodee: Architecture—The Rules Engine. Keeping that engine separate from UI and networking makes the same rules available to server validation, previews, automated tests, and history checks.
Keep rejected moves from partially applying
Validation should happen before the shared state changes. Avoid code paths that update a piece, resource, or turn counter and only later discover that the move is illegal. Build or calculate the candidate next state, verify it, and make the accepted transition the sole state change visible to other clients.

- The color blind accessible deck has special graphic symbols on each card to help identify its color, allowing players with any form of color blindness to play!
The sources support authoritative validation and serialized processing, but they do not prescribe one database transaction or storage primitive for every deployment. Choose an atomic transaction, per-game command queue, or other serialization mechanism appropriate to your backend, and ensure that a failed action cannot leave a partial update behind.
Handle stale and overlapping requests deliberately
Two requests may be based on the same board version, or a request may arrive after another player has already changed the game. Include a state version or equivalent precondition in proposals when clients need to identify the position they observed. Then choose a policy that fits the game:

- Works in groups from 2-12+ people. Great for large parties, offsites, family gatherings, and anywhere you need instant fun.
- 5 seconds to set up, 1 minute to learn, 30 minutes to play
- Sequential turn-based play: commonly reject a proposal whose expected version no longer matches the current game, then send the client the latest state so it can try again.
- Simultaneous-action play: a move based on an older global version may still be valid if the acting player’s relevant observation has not changed. EigenInteractive documents this exception for its simultaneous-move design and serializes commands per game; it is a pattern, not a universal rule. EigenInteractive: Server-authoritative multiplayer games.
Also decide how to handle duplicate submissions, such as a client retry after a timeout. An idempotency key or equivalent request tracking can prevent a retry from applying the same accepted action twice. This is an implementation choice; the cited sources do not mandate a particular mechanism.
Use client prediction without surrendering authority
Clients may run the game logic locally to show an optimistic preview while waiting for the server. boardgame.io describes clients running game logic in parallel while the game master remains authoritative. If the server rejects the proposal, the client should reconcile its display with the authoritative state rather than treating the preview as a committed move. boardgame.io: Philosophy.

Prediction may be unsuitable when legality or outcome depends on secret state the client does not possess. In that case, a local preview can be wrong or reveal information; wait for the authoritative response or limit prediction to information the player is allowed to see.
Choose the right rules and authority architecture
Server authority is especially useful when a backend must protect central game state and enforce rules consistently. Nakama presents authoritative multiplayer as a design choice for games that need stricter rule control; it is not the only viable model for every game. Nakama: Authoritative multiplayer.

A standalone rules module can be called from the server, UI previews, tests, and replay validation. A multiplayer framework can simplify message handling and game-master plumbing. These approaches can also be combined: keep the rules independently testable while using a framework to coordinate sessions and commands. Asmodee discusses a modular rules engine, while boardgame.io documents a game-master model.
Action histories can help reconstruct or check game state. Deterministic replay is an engine-specific choice: use it when audit, recovery, or debugging requirements justify the added design work rather than assuming every game needs it.
Test legality, rejection, and state integrity
Test the rules engine independently, then test the multiplayer path that receives, validates, commits, and broadcasts actions. Asmodee recommends automated unit and integration tests for a standalone engine. Useful cases include:

- wrong player or wrong turn;
- out-of-range coordinates, unknown pieces, or a piece that is not at the submitted origin;
- an occupied destination or otherwise impossible action;
- a game that is already terminal or in a phase that disallows moves;
- a stale state version, an overlapping request, and a duplicate submission;
- a legal capture and resulting turn or win-condition updates;
- replaying a legal action history and checking that the resulting state is valid.
For rejected actions, assert that the shared state is unchanged and that no accepted-move event is broadcast. For accepted actions, assert that the authoritative next state and the event clients receive agree.
