To validate an AI-generated AWS diagram, treat it as a hypothesis and compare it with observed AWS resource and configuration data for a clearly defined workload. Check diagram components against inventory, then verify arrows and boundaries against network topology and dependency evidence. Infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and template checks can help, but they do not by themselves prove that an image matches what is deployed now.
Define what the diagram is supposed to cover
First specify the workload and the boundaries the diagram claims to show: AWS accounts, Regions, environments, and any external systems or on-premises connections. Record the environment and the date of the review. Without that scope, you cannot tell whether a missing resource is an error or simply outside the diagram’s intended coverage.

AWS workload-discovery guidance recommends identifying architectural components and dependencies and creating a visual representation. Its suggested discovery artifacts include IaC repositories and networking topology. Gather those alongside an inventory of deployed resources and configurations before judging the diagram. Compare the diagram with deployed resources
Check each depicted service and resource against an inventory covering the declared accounts and Regions. Also look for resources in that inventory that the diagram omits. Classify discrepancies rather than silently editing the image: a resource may be missing, shown under the wrong identity, depicted without evidence, or outside the stated workload boundary.

AWS Config can help provide evidence about supported resources, their configurations, and changes. AWS’s change-management guidance describes recording resources and using an aggregator for visibility across accounts. However, an apparent omission is meaningful only if the relevant account and Region are in scope, the recorder covers the resource type, and the resource is supported. Confirm that coverage before treating “not found” as “not deployed.” AWS Config change-management guidance
Validate arrows and connections separately
A correct list of nodes does not establish that the diagram’s relationships are correct. Treat every arrow, network boundary, and external connection as a claim to verify against networking topology, documented dependencies, and available configuration evidence. Do not infer a network path or data flow just because it is common in a familiar AWS architecture.

If the evidence does not establish a relationship, label it as uncertain or leave it unresolved in the review record rather than presenting it as fact. AWS’s discovery guidance and Config’s resource and configuration visibility can inform this check, but they do not make every possible application-level dependency observable. Where the workload is managed through IaC, compare the diagram and deployed inventory with the relevant versioned templates or source. Differences are findings to reconcile: a template describes intended or declared infrastructure, while live inventory is evidence about observed deployment. Do not assume either one automatically represents the other.

AWS recommends maintaining infrastructure as code, including through CloudFormation or CDK, and describes template validation as a way to catch issues before deployment. Those checks can establish properties of templates; they do not verify that a separate AI-generated image matches resources currently running. AWS Well-Architected guidance on infrastructure as code
Know what AWS validation tools do—and do not—check
| Tool or approach | What it can establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Config | Visibility into recorded, supported resources, configurations, and changes; an aggregator can provide cross-account visibility in the documented organization pattern. | Complete coverage unless recording, supported resource types, accounts, and Regions are confirmed; diagram accuracy by itself. |
| CloudFormation template validation and Guard | Template syntax and some semantic issues before resource creation; Guard can check templates against required or prohibited configurations. | Whether a separate diagram depicts the resources actually deployed. |
cloudformation-validate |
Local CloudFormation JSON or YAML template checks for invalid structure, broken references, security issues, and best-practice findings. It can be used from a CLI, library, or CDK workflow, with custom rules in supported formats. | Diagram-to-live-state reconciliation: its documented input is templates. |
| Well-Architected architecture review | Review of IaC templates against the Well-Architected Framework. The current guide supports CDK and Terraform projects provided through S3. | Whether an independent diagram matches the live inventory. |
| Visual discovery tools | Third-party discovery and auto-diagramming tools may help create a representation. | A guarantee of accuracy from AI generation; AWS workload-discovery guidance does not name or compare AI diagram generators. |

Keep a discrepancy and evidence record
For each mismatch or unresolved claim, record enough detail for another reviewer to reproduce the decision. A practical review log can use these fields:
- Diagram element and mismatch type
- Observed evidence and its source
- AWS account, Region, and environment
- Owner and decision, including whether the element or relationship was corrected, retained, or left uncertain
- Last checked date and time
This is a practical record format, not an AWS-published standard. Include the inventory’s coverage and any unobserved areas so the diagram’s scope and confidence are clear.

Refresh the comparison after changes
Repeat the inventory and relationship checks after deployments or material configuration changes. AWS Config guidance describes snapshots, history, and centralized S3 storage patterns that can help preserve a change record. Their usefulness still depends on what is being recorded and which accounts and Regions are covered. AWS Config change-management guidance
When comparing an IaC-derived, inventory-derived, or manually maintained diagram, assess deployed-resource coverage, relationship clarity, account and Region scope, traceability to evidence, refresh speed, and maintenance effort. These are useful review criteria synthesized from AWS discovery and change-visibility guidance, not an official AWS scoring rubric.
