Treat an AI-generated scientific result as a claim to check, not as evidence. Before relying on it, trace important claims to original sources, inspect the data and methods, and use independent checks suited to the consequences of being wrong. Keep a record of what you verified, what remains uncertain, and how AI contributed.
Decide what kind of result you need to validate
“AI-generated result” can mean several different things, and each calls for a different check. Separate the output into the parts that matter: factual statements, summaries of prior studies, numerical results, code, experimental predictions, generated images, and causal interpretations. A citation check may validate a reference but cannot establish that an analysis is sound; a successful calculation cannot show that the input data were appropriate.

Start a record before checking the output. Note the tool and model version if known, date, task, inputs and prompt, the generated answer, any human edits, and the checks performed. The NIH Library GenAI Toolkit includes an AI-output documentation form that can help structure this record.
Trace consequential claims to their original evidence
For each claim you may cite, teach, publish, or act on, open the underlying paper, dataset, official record, or protocol. Confirm that the source exists and that its title, authors, publication details, DOI or other stable identifier match. Then check the relevant passage, table, or result: does it support the claim as written, in the population and conditions described?

A genuine reference can still be irrelevant, misquoted, or used to imply more than its findings show. Do not cite an AI-generated reference until you have independently located and checked it. NIH and HHS warn that AI may produce nonexistent references and advise researchers to verify accuracy; they also identify invented references and misrepresented data as potential research-integrity concerns. See NIH and HHS’s reminders on research integrity when using AI.
Examine the science behind the prose
Clear writing is not evidence of a rigorous design. NIH describes scientific rigor as applying the scientific method across experimental design, methodology, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. Its guidance on rigor and transparency is a useful reminder to assess the work behind a conclusion, not just its explanation.

Inspect the data, assumptions, and analysis
- Identify the data used, how they were collected and cleaned, and whether the source and population fit the question.
- Check exclusions, missing data, assumptions, statistical procedures, and code that materially affect the result.
- Ask whether the design addresses plausible confounders and alternative explanations, rather than merely producing a plausible association or prediction.
- Look for relevant weaknesses in prior studies and whether the conclusion acknowledges uncertainty and limitations.
For biomedical work, also consider whether relevant biological variables were addressed and whether important resources—such as cell lines, antibodies, or specialty chemicals—were authenticated. NIH’s grant guidance on rigor and reproducibility covers robust and unbiased design, biological variables, prior research, and resource authentication.
Match the level of checking to the stakes
The NIH Library toolkit describes a practical risk-based approach. These tiers are guidance, not a universal legal standard; local institutional, funder, journal, and field-specific requirements still apply.

| Use and consequence | Checks to consider |
|---|---|
| Low: private brainstorming or rough internal notes | A human check for clarity, correctness, and usefulness. |
| Medium: literature review, teaching material, or meeting summary | Subject-matter review where possible, cross-checking against trusted sources, and a brief record of what was reviewed. |
| High: publication, official report, policy or funding analysis, or clinical or sensitive use | Multiple checks, such as expert review, direct source verification, testing or replication where feasible, and fuller documentation. |
The higher the cost of an error, the less appropriate it is to rely on a single check or one person’s quick review. For clinical, regulated, or otherwise sensitive work, establish applicable review and validation requirements with the responsible institution or authority rather than treating a general checklist as sufficient.
Use a check that is independent of the generated answer
Choose methods that test different failure points. The NIH Library toolkit offers a menu, not one universally sufficient test:

- Empirical testing or real-world observation: compare a prediction with measurements or outcomes relevant to the claim.
- Replication or rerunning: where feasible, have another qualified researcher reproduce the analysis from recorded inputs, data, and methods.
- Benchmarks or human-work comparison: compare performance with an appropriate reference, while checking that the benchmark actually matches the intended use.
- Consistency checks: look for contradictions across results, units, assumptions, or related observations.
- Independent computation or proof: verify calculations separately, or use formal mathematical reasoning where the claim permits it.
Repeatedly asking the same model may expose inconsistent answers, but it is not an independent confirmation of truth. The check should rely on evidence or a method that does not simply reproduce the same generation process.
Make the result reproducible and disclose uncertainty
Keep enough information visible for another qualified person to assess how the result was produced: data and provenance, assumptions, methods, statistical procedures, and relevant code or settings. NIST’s Guidelines, Information Quality Standards and Administrative Mechanism frames reproducibility around transparency in these matters: “If sufficient transparency is achieved on each of these matters, then an analytic result should meet the reproducibility standard.”

- Natural Textbook Display presents formulas and results exactly as written in textbooks for intuitive learning.
Record which claims were checked, which were not, what failed to reproduce, and the uncertainty or imprecision that remains. Do not turn an untested assumption or a failed check into a confident conclusion. What counts as adequate reproducibility or acceptable uncertainty depends on the discipline and the intended use.
Report AI use accurately
Describe AI’s role in analysis, research, or manuscript preparation as required by the applicable institution, funder, or publication venue. Disclose image edits, verify references, and ensure data and results are represented accurately. NIH and HHS note that AI use can intersect with fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism when data are misrepresented, images altered without disclosure, references invented, or copied text presented improperly. Check the rules that apply to the work; policies vary and can change.
