Before investing in a private PDF/DOCX comparison tool, prove two things: it catches the changes people care about in real documents, and its privacy promise matches what the software actually sends or stores. Local parsing is technically plausible, but a browser-side library demo or a vendor’s privacy statement is not evidence that a new product is accurate, complete, or free of outbound data.
Define what “private” means in observable terms
A promise such as “files stay on this device” is too vague to validate. Specify which data may be processed locally and whether any of it leaves the device at any point, including during errors or export.

- Original PDF/DOCX bytes and extracted text
- Filenames, file paths, and document metadata
- Temporary files, browser storage, caches, and crash reports
- Analytics, telemetry, license checks, and error-reporting payloads
- Comparison results and exported redlines or reports
Keep three claims separate: files are processed locally, the application works without an internet connection, and the application makes no network requests. They are not equivalent. For example, Draftable says its desktop comparison, conversion, and rendering happen locally, but its security documentation says periodic license verification requires connectivity and optional telemetry can be disabled. That is a vendor-described behavior, not proof about a different product. Draftable’s desktop security documentation

Choose a comparison scope users can understand
Separate digital PDFs from scanned pages
A PDF may contain selectable text, scanned page images, or a mixture. A text-extraction tool can compare only the text it successfully extracts; it should not imply that it detects visual changes in scanned pages. Adobe’s documentation treats reflowable/report-style documents and scanned documents differently: scanned pages can be compared as captured images, with text handled separately. Adobe Acrobat’s document comparison guidance
Decide whether OCR or image comparison is in scope. If neither is, say that scanned PDFs are unsupported or may produce incomplete results. If either is, test it as its own capability rather than inferring it from successful text extraction.

- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
Distinguish text changes from layout and formatting changes
Readers may care about inserted or deleted words, moved paragraphs, formatting, table structure, headers, footers, or page layout. These are different comparison problems. A text-only diff can miss a formatting change; a visual difference can flag harmless reflow as a change. State which change types the first version intends to identify, and how it will present uncertain or unsupported cases.
Make the review result useful
A change count alone is rarely enough. Decide whether users need a side-by-side view, a redline, navigation between changes, word- or character-level detail, filters, or an export they can review and share. Export deserves privacy testing too: it may contain the source text even when comparison stays local.

Build a small test set before expanding the implementation
Use documents you have permission to process, and record the expected result for each pair before running comparisons. A compact set with deliberately known changes is more useful at first than a large collection of unlabelled files.
- One inserted passage, one deletion, and one edited passage
- A moved paragraph and an unchanged pair, to check ordering and false positives
- Reflowed text, tables, headers, and footers
- PDFs with selectable text, and scans only if OCR or image comparison is part of the product scope
- DOCX files with formatting or structural features the tool claims to support
For each pair, compare actual output with the expected changes. Track missed changes, false positives, ordering, navigation, and whether the exported result is readable and safe to share. Include larger files to observe memory use and responsiveness, but treat those observations as product-specific results—not general performance claims.

Test the privacy promise across the whole workflow
Validate the application while loading documents, comparing, exporting, and triggering error handling. Inspect network requests and stored artifacts at each step, then repeat with connectivity disabled. Check whether filenames, extracted text, document bytes, or output content appear in requests, logs, temporary storage, caches, or crash reports.
A web application can perform comparison in the browser and still contact its server for application delivery, analytics, telemetry, or error reporting. Document those behaviors separately. Offline use alone does not prove that no data was transmitted earlier, and a lack of obvious uploads does not establish that temporary or diagnostic artifacts are absent.

Use existing tools as baselines, not as proof of superiority
People already have comparison options. Record exact edition and platform when using them as reference points; features and availability can vary. The documented capabilities below are product descriptions, not results from an independent head-to-head test.
| Baseline | Documented capability | Scope to keep in view |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Word legal blackline | Creates the comparison in a third document; offers controls for comments, formatting, text, and character- or word-level granularity. Microsoft says the default new-document workflow leaves the source documents unchanged. | The cited support page applies to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021 desktop for Windows. Microsoft’s legal blackline instructions |
| Adobe Acrobat Pro | Provides PDF comparison settings, text-only comparison, scan/image handling, a summary, side-by-side review, and filtering. | Adobe describes the Text Only option as designed for documents of 250 pages or more; that is product guidance, not an independent speed benchmark. This source establishes PDF comparison, not DOCX comparison. Adobe’s comparison guidance |
| Draftable Desktop | The vendor advertises PDF and Word inputs, side-by-side and redline views, local processing, and PDF export. Its product page reports more than 10 million documents; that is a vendor-published usage figure, not independent accuracy evidence. | The page lists Windows 10 or later, Office 2007 or later for Office formats, and USD $129 per year at access on 2026-10-07; these commercial terms may change. Its security page separately describes periodic license connectivity and optional telemetry. Draftable Desktop · Draftable security details |
Compare products on the dimensions that shape your own promise: PDF and DOCX coverage; digital-text versus scanned PDFs; text versus visual/layout changes; tables, headers, comments, and formatting; moved content; granularity; review and export options; connectivity; operating-system and Office dependencies; and license terms. Avoid claims that a new tool is more accurate or more private unless a controlled test supports that conclusion.
Keep parsing libraries in their proper role
PDF.js documents a core layer for parsing and interpreting PDFs and a display layer for rendering and document information. It can accept raw PDF binary as a Uint8Array, which supports a browser-side processing route. That does not, by itself, provide a complete comparison engine or guarantee handling of every PDF feature. PDF.js Getting Started
Mammoth.js documents a browser bundle that accepts a DOCX as an ArrayBuffer. Its raw-text extraction ignores formatting, and the project warns that it does not sanitize source documents. Treat it as a possible extraction component, not evidence of Word-perfect fidelity or safe handling of hostile files. Plan for unsupported-element disclosure, format-aware handling, and resilient processing. Mammoth.js README
Decide whether the concept is ready to build
Move beyond validation only when the product has a bounded, user-understandable scope; a labelled set of representative comparisons with known outcomes; a review flow that exposes the changes users need; and privacy tests covering data movement and storage throughout the workflow. Keep unresolved cases visible in the product’s promise rather than silently treating extraction success as complete comparison.
