How to Lock HP Printer Settings and Secure Its Network Access

Lock down an HP printer’s EWS with a unique administrator password, then review wireless security, firmware, and services in light of the features you use.

To lock an HP printer’s settings, set a unique administrator password in its Embedded Web Server (EWS). The EWS is the browser-based interface for a networked printer, usually opened with the printer’s IP address or host name. Then review wireless security, firmware, and network services based on the features you actually use. Exact controls and menu names vary by model and firmware, so use your printer’s manual for the final navigation.

Open the printer’s Embedded Web Server

  1. Find the printer’s IP address or host name. Check the printer’s control panel or print a network or configuration report. The exact menu and report name depend on the model.
  2. Use a browser on the same network. Enter the IP address or host name in the address bar to open the EWS. If the page does not load, confirm that your device and printer are on the same network and that the address is current.
  3. Sign in if prompted. Use the administrator credentials already configured for the printer. Some models may use a factory PIN as an initial credential; do not assume all HP printers share a default password or PIN. Depending on the model, initial credentials may be printed on a label, available through a report, or handled by another setup flow.

HP’s general EWS guidance explains how to access printer settings. For exact credentials and navigation, consult the manual for your printer model.

Set or change the administrator password

In the EWS, look for the Security area or its equivalent, then find the administrator-password or account settings. HP’s LaserJet instructions show one model-specific example of signing in and changing EWS credentials; the labels and steps are not universal.

  • Choose a unique, strong password that you do not use for another account.
  • Store it in a secure password manager or another protected place so authorized users can retrieve it.
  • If the printer has an existing administrator password, change it if you do not know who set it or whether it is still secure.

An administrator password helps prevent unauthorized changes through the management interface. It does not secure the wireless network, protect an exposed printer from every network risk, or prevent changes made by someone with physical access to the device.

#1 Best Overall

Secure the wireless connection and keep firmware current

For a printer on a home or small-office network—especially one with weak or open wireless protection—HP’s consumer security recommendations include using WPA2 or stronger wireless security, redirecting connections to HTTPS, using high encryption strength where available, installing current firmware, and disabling services you do not use.

These controls may appear under different names or may not be available on every printer. Secure the Wi-Fi router as well as the printer: an EWS password does not compensate for an open or poorly secured wireless network. Check the printer’s manual and the router’s own documentation for the controls available in your setup.

Review services before disabling them

HP’s security guidance and enterprise security recommendations describe restricting services and access paths that are unnecessary in a local environment. Depending on the printer, options can include print protocols and remote configuration routes. Restrict only services your environment does not need: disabling one can interrupt printing, device discovery, scanning, remote printing, monitoring, or support.

  • Before changing a setting, identify which computers, phones, applications, or management tools rely on it.
  • Change one control at a time and verify that normal printing and any required scanning or management functions still work.
  • If a needed feature stops working, restore the relevant setting using the model’s instructions or ask the network administrator to review the configuration.

Decide whether to keep Web Services

Web Services connect supported printers to certain HP offerings, including Instant Ink, Print Anywhere, and ePrint. If you use one of these features, check its requirements before disabling Web Services. If you do not use them, you can review HP’s instructions for removing or disabling Web Services; availability and steps depend on the printer.

Use model-specific guidance for the final settings

HP states that settings vary by printer model and firmware. Its Zero Trust security guidance and general security guidance offer recommendations, but not every control applies to every device or use case. Find your printer’s manual through HP Support and follow its instructions for the exact menus, credentials, and available security options.

HP says it “strongly recommends configuring minimum security settings for all HP printers to eliminate most security exposures.” That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a printer will be secure against every threat. Treat the password, network protections, firmware updates, and careful service choices as ways to reduce risk, not to make the device unhackable.
