A file can be syntactically valid yet still be read incorrectly if its delimiter, header handling, encoding, or row mapping differs from the benchmark configuration.
Start with the benchmark’s input contract
Find the official input specification for the exact benchmark version, or inspect its loader implementation. Record the requirements before checking the file; generic CSV conventions do not establish what a particular benchmark accepts.
- Expected file path and encoding.
- Delimiter, quote and escape rules, and whether the first record is a header.
- Required column names and order, and expected field count.
- Column types, null or empty-value rules, allowed values and ranges.
- Any row-count, uniqueness, or other dataset constraints.
These settings can be benchmark-specific. For example, Apache JMeter’s CSV Data Set Config exposes delimiter, encoding, header, quote-handling, end-of-file, and sharing options. JMeter describes the component as being used to “read lines from a file, and split them into variables.”
Check the file and its CSV dialect
Confirm that the file exists at the required path and is readable using the declared encoding. Do not assume the separator is a comma: a file that appears to contain a single column may use a different delimiter, such as a semicolon. Check whether a header is expected and whether line endings are consistent. Treat blank rows as failures only if the benchmark contract or your validation policy disallows them.

CSV dialects vary between producing applications. CSVLint’s guidance identifies common problems such as inconsistent field counts, malformed quotes, and header issues. A parser that accepts one dialect does not prove the benchmark uses the same dialect.
Parse every record with a CSV reader
Do not split input on commas or physical newlines. Quoted fields can contain commas, quotes, and newlines, so manual splitting can corrupt records. Use a CSV parser configured for the file’s actual dialect. Python’s standard-library documentation explains that opening a CSV file with newline="" is needed to handle embedded newlines correctly; its reader also supports dialect controls for differences between CSV producers.

This example checks syntax and consistent field width for a comma-delimited UTF-8 file with a header:

) from excAdapt the encoding, delimiter, and header handling to the benchmark contract. With quoted multiline fields, a logical record can span several physical lines, so the reported line is where the record ends or where parsing failed—not necessarily its starting line. This example checks basic syntax and field width only; it does not validate column meaning or benchmark compatibility. The relevant behavior is documented in the Python csv module documentation.

Validate headers and values against the schema
Compare parsed headers with the required names and order when order matters. Check for missing, extra, misspelled, blank, or duplicate names according to the contract. Then validate each row’s values, not just its shape.
- Parse numeric and date fields using the required formats, and enforce specified ranges.
- Check enumerated fields against allowed values.
- Distinguish required values from nullable fields and from empty strings.
- Check identifier uniqueness and row-count constraints only when the benchmark requires them.
CSVLint identifies undeclared, empty, or duplicate headers, ragged rows, and inconsistent values as issues; its service also supports optional schema checking. These checks can help identify structural problems, but the benchmark’s specification determines which findings are failures.

If using pandas for downstream validation, set column types deliberately where inference could change meaning—for example, an identifier such as 00123 should not accidentally become the number 123. Pandas documents dtype controls and malformed-line handling in its read_csv documentation. Avoid on_bad_lines="skip" during preflight: pandas documents that this setting omits bad lines, which can silently change the dataset or workload. Prefer a visible failure or an explicit report of every rejected record.
Test the benchmark’s actual loader
After parser and schema checks pass, run the benchmark’s documented validation, dry-run, or minimal input-loading path with the same file and configuration planned for the full run. Confirm that the loader maps each expected column to the intended variable and consumes the expected number of rows. This catches compatibility problems that a general-purpose CSV check cannot.

For JMeter, check its configured delimiter and header handling, choose whether input should recycle at end-of-file or stop threads, and ensure the CSV is available at the appropriate path on every remote test server in a distributed run. Its CSV Data Set Config documentation describes these runtime settings.
Choose checks that match the risk

These checks complement one another. CSVLint states that uploaded files are deleted after validation and reports do not retain identifying content, but review the service’s current information before sending sensitive inputs. For private or restricted data, local validation may be more appropriate.
Keep a reproducible preflight record
Record the file name or checksum, benchmark and parser versions, declared encoding and dialect, schema version, row and column counts, validation command or configuration, failures and warnings, and validation date. This makes it possible to identify later whether a changed file or configuration—not the benchmark itself—accounts for a different result.
