To check whether a power bank is charging your phone at full speed, first confirm that the phone, the bank’s specific port and the cable support a compatible charging method. Then check the phone’s charging status; for a live wattage reading, use a compatible USB-C inline power meter. “Full speed” means the most power your particular phone can accept under its current conditions—not the maximum printed on the power bank.
What “full speed” means
A power bank’s output rating is its capability, not a promise that your phone is drawing that much power. With USB Power Delivery, the phone requests power and the charger and device negotiate what can be supplied. The phone, bank port, cable and charging protocol must all work together. USB Implementers Forum describes USB PD as flexible power delivery over a single cable; its Revision 3.1, announced in 2021, enables up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. That standard-level ceiling does not tell you what a particular phone will accept. USB-IF: USB Charger (USB Power Delivery)

Look up the wired charging method and maximum input supported by your exact phone model, then compare those requirements with the output listed for the bank port you are using. A connector that fits is not proof that the charging protocols match.
Check using the phone first
The phone’s own charge screen or alert is the easiest first check, though the amount of detail varies by manufacturer and software version. These indicators are useful clues, not necessarily live wattage measurements.

iPhone
Apple says iOS 18 and later can show a Slow Charger alert when a higher-wattage charger could improve charging. On iOS 26, Settings > Battery can show a time estimate. Apple’s model-specific guidance also distinguishes cable types: iPhone 15 and later use USB-C and USB Power Delivery for faster wired charging; earlier iPhones use USB-C to Lightning for faster wired charging. See Apple’s iPhone charge-speed guidance for details.
Google Pixel
Google’s Pixel charging guidance covers charging indicators and the “Check charging accessory” prompt. It notes that a USB-A-to-USB-C connection charges a Pixel more slowly than USB-C-to-USB-C and provides model-specific adapter guidance. These are Pixel-specific examples, not rules for every phone.

Check the bank port and cable
- Find your phone’s exact charging requirements. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your model, including supported wired charging method and any specified adapter or cable requirements.
- Check the bank’s port output. Read the label or manual for the particular port in use and its supported protocols. If the bank has several ports, check whether connecting another device reduces or redistributes the available output.
- Use a compatible, known-good cable. A cable can fit while failing to support the combination of phone, port and charging method you need. Apple and Google’s different cable guidance illustrates why connector type alone is not enough.
- Connect directly where practical. Hubs, adapters and other intermediate connections can affect charging. Apple notes that hubs and car ports may charge more slowly than a dedicated USB-C charger.
Get a live wattage reading with a USB-C meter
If you want a number rather than a status message, place a compatible USB-C inline power meter between the power bank and phone. It can show voltage, current and wattage while charging. For example, the ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C/KM002C manual labels these readings VBUS, IBUS and PWR. The manual also cautions that protocol identification may not be fully accurate and that meter cable simulation has limitations. A meter reading is therefore an observation of power in the path, not proof by itself that the phone is reaching its model-specific maximum. ChargerLAB POWER-Z KM003C/KM002C user manual

The reading can change from moment to moment. Compare it with the phone’s supported charging behavior and note the conditions when you measure. If inserting the meter seems to change charging behavior, check again without it.

Choose the right check for your question
| Method | Useful for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Phone status or settings | A quick, no-cost clue or warning | Available detail varies by phone and software; it may not show live input watts. |
| Phone, bank and cable specifications | Checking whether the charging method and port capability are compatible | Specifications do not show the phone’s instantaneous power draw. |
| USB-C inline power meter | Observing voltage, current and wattage in the charging path | The reading varies over time; protocol detection and cable simulation can be imperfect. |
Why the reading may be lower than expected
A low or changing wattage reading does not automatically mean the power bank is faulty. Charging depends on the phone’s state and surroundings as well as the accessories and available output.
- Battery state: Google says a Pixel can charge faster when its battery is low because it can take in more power. As the battery fills, the rate can change.
- Temperature: Apple says charging may be put on hold in extreme temperatures. Google says a Pixel may pause charging to protect itself when it gets too warm.
- Phone activity: Apple notes that processor- or graphics-intensive tasks—such as gaming, camera use, or streaming high-quality video with a bright display—can reduce charging speed.
- Cable, protocol or accessory problems: Google says charging speed can vary with the cable and adapter, and that unsupported or damaged accessories can cause slow or absent charging. USB PD power is negotiated between device and charger, rather than determined by the bank’s headline rating alone.
- Shared output or extra connections: Apple says a multi-port wired charger may reduce maximum output depending on combined demand. Hubs and car ports may also charge more slowly than a dedicated USB-C charger.

- Let the phone cool if it feels warm, and avoid testing when the battery is nearly full.
- Leave the phone idle while it charges.
- Use a known-good cable that is compatible with the phone and bank port.
- Use one bank port at a time, without a hub or adapter if possible.
- Compare the phone status or meter reading under those conditions. If available, compare with another suitable power supply using the same phone and cable.
- If you used a meter and the result seems unusual, repeat the check without it.
This controlled comparison helps separate changing phone conditions from a possible cable, port or bank issue. It does not imply that a phone should hold one fixed wattage throughout a charge; the supported rate is model-specific and can change with conditions.
