Use OBS to play and send your lesson playlist; use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to configure, preview, start, and end the YouTube event. For a playlist of local lesson files, add OBS’s VLC Video source, connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, then check the preview before you go live. A YouTube playlist and an OBS media playlist are different: this workflow covers files played by OBS, not controlling a YouTube playlist from OBS.
What each tool does
- OBS: Builds the program you send to YouTube. It plays the local lesson files and can combine them with a microphone, webcam, screen capture, or other sources.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Sets up and manages the YouTube event, provides the stream URL and key, shows the incoming encoder preview, and lets you launch or end a scheduled stream.
The steps below use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist of local media files. That source requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s built-in Media Source is for a single media file, while VLC Video can play a list. OBS Media Sources

Build and test the lesson playlist in OBS
- Install VLC, then open OBS and create or select a scene for the lesson.
- In the scene’s Sources area, add a VLC Video source. Add the local lesson files to its playlist and put them in the intended teaching order.
- Check the playlist’s playback options. OBS documents looping as on and shuffle as off by default; confirm both settings match the lesson. Play through the sequence before class so you can catch missing files, unintended gaps, or an incorrect order. OBS Media Sources
- If needed, add a microphone, webcam, display capture, or capture-card source. Source order affects which visual source appears on top. OBS captures microphone and desktop audio by default, and those inputs can be changed under Settings > Audio. OBS Sources Guide · OBS Quick Start Guide
- Check OBS’s audio meters and make sure the intended audio is audible. If you add a microphone or desktop audio, verify it is not muted or unintentionally doubled with audio embedded in the lesson videos.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
Start an event immediately
In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room and set up the event. Enter its title, description, audience and privacy settings as appropriate. YouTube’s interface and available options can change, so follow the current labels shown in Studio. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Schedule an event in advance
In Live Control Room, open Manage and choose Schedule Stream. Set the event details and privacy, then save it. Scheduling gives you an upcoming watch page to share; viewers may opt in to reminders. Connect OBS to Live Control Room
- Open the event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if available, or configure the encoder manually with the stream URL and key displayed for this event. Do not substitute a server address from another setup.
- If configuring manually, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if OBS supports it. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted extension of RTMP. Manage live stream settings
- Treat the stream key as a credential. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address that let an encoder send a feed. If you believe yours is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key. Editors and viewers cannot reset it. Manage live stream settings
Choose settings and preview before teaching
- Choose the event’s latency setting in Live Control Room based on how much real-time interaction matters. Lower latency reduces delay but trades off against playback buffering; use the option that fits your class. Manage live stream settings
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for Live Control Room to receive the encoder feed and show its preview.
- Check the preview for the right scene and lesson image, and check audio before inviting viewers or starting instruction. For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
YouTube recommends setting up in advance, testing the encoder, and monitoring the stream. These are practical recommendations, not a guarantee that every setup will behave the same way. YouTube live streaming tips
End the stream and find its archive
When the lesson is over, stop sending content from OBS, then use End Stream in Live Control Room for the scheduled encoder workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and accessible from the Live tab in Studio. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Common problems and fixes
- The playlist source is unavailable or will not play: Install VLC and confirm that the files still exist at the paths in the VLC Video playlist. Re-add files if they were moved.
- Lessons play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly: Review the VLC Video playlist order and its shuffle and loop controls. Test the complete sequence before streaming.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm OBS is streaming, and check that the event’s stream URL and key were copied correctly into OBS. Use the URL displayed in Live Control Room, not an assumed server address.
- The preview appears, but the event has not started: For a scheduled encoder stream, select Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Ask a channel owner or manager to reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the key in OBS.
- Viewers report delay or buffering: Reconsider the event’s latency setting. YouTube describes a trade-off between delay and playback buffering; there is no single setting that suits every class.
- Microphone or lesson audio is missing or doubled: Check the OBS audio meters, source mute states, and Settings > Audio. Make sure the intended inputs are active and that overlapping audio sources are deliberate.
