To capture a website with a screenshot API using POST, send an authenticated HTTP POST request to that provider’s documented endpoint, put the page URL and capture settings in the JSON body, then save the successful response as an image. The endpoint, authentication method, option names, and response format vary by provider, so the example below uses ScreenshotEngine’s documented contract rather than treating it as universal.
Send a POST request with ScreenshotEngine
ScreenshotEngine documents POST https://api.screenshotengine.com/v1/screenshot. Its request uses a Bearer token in the Authorization header, a JSON body, and the required url field. The example requests a full-page PNG:
curl --fail-with-body --request POST 'https://api.screenshotengine.com/v1/screenshot'
--header "Authorization: Bearer $SCREENSHOTENGINE_API_KEY"
--header 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{
"url": "https://example.com",
"format": "png",
"height": "full"
}'
--output screenshot.png
Set SCREENSHOTENGINE_API_KEY in the environment where the command runs, using the key issued by the provider. Keep it server-side: do not put a real key in public source code or a URL. The provider says a JSON-body field named api_key does not authenticate the request. Its documentation uses --fail-with-body, which requires cURL 7.76 or later.
The --output option writes the response body to screenshot.png. A successful response is image bytes, not a JSON object containing a download URL. On errors, ScreenshotEngine returns JSON, so check the HTTP status before assuming the saved file is a valid PNG. The cURL command’s --fail-with-body makes HTTP errors visible while retaining the error response body.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What belongs in the request
Authentication and body
For ScreenshotEngine, send the credential in Authorization: Bearer … and set Content-Type: application/json. The required POST JSON field is url. POST body field names are case-sensitive; use the documented spelling and send JSON booleans and numbers as their actual types, not quoted strings.
Format, dimensions, and full-page output
ScreenshotEngine’s quickstart says sending only a URL produces a JPEG at a 1280 × 720 viewport. Full-page capture is opt-in: the example sets height to "full" and requests PNG with format. Other render settings are also provider-specific; consult the API’s parameter reference before adding fields.

Consent handling and dark mode
ScreenshotEngine documents cookie-banner blocking and dark mode as opt-in options. Do not assume these, or similarly named fields, work on another service. Check that provider’s POST parameter names and accepted values.
Handle the response safely
- Check the HTTP status. Treat a non-success response as an API error, not as an image.
- Use the response content as documented. ScreenshotEngine returns image bytes on success and JSON on error; other APIs may return a different format.
- Save with a matching extension. The example requests PNG and writes
screenshot.png. If you request a different format, choose the corresponding extension. - Inspect failures before retrying. Read the error response and correct the URL, authentication, request fields, or capture settings rather than repeatedly sending the same invalid request.
Common problems and fixes
- 401 or authentication failure: Confirm the Bearer token is present and valid in the
Authorizationheader. A body field calledapi_keyis not a substitute for ScreenshotEngine’s documented header. - Invalid request or missing URL: Include a valid
urlstring in the JSON body. Check JSON syntax, exact case-sensitive field names, and that booleans or numbers are not accidentally quoted. - The output file contains JSON or will not open: The request may have failed. Check the HTTP status and response body before treating the file as an image.
- The capture is only 1280 × 720: That is ScreenshotEngine’s documented viewport default when only a URL is supplied. Request full-page capture explicitly if that is the desired output.
- cURL rejects
--fail-with-body: The provider’s example requires cURL 7.76 or later. Upgrade cURL or use another supported way to check the HTTP status and preserve the error body. - An option has no effect: Verify it is supported by the selected provider’s POST endpoint and that its POST field name and value type match the documentation. GET query names and POST JSON names may differ.
Choosing the right API contract
Before implementing a client, verify five things in the service documentation: how it authenticates, its POST URL and required fields, whether success returns bytes or another representation, which rendering controls it supports, and where the request is intended to run. ScreenshotEngine documents a direct image-byte response and server-oriented key handling. Cloudflare Browser Run documents a separate POST /screenshot endpoint that can render a page from a URL or supplied HTML, callable through its REST API or Workers Bindings; that is a different contract, not a drop-in match for ScreenshotEngine’s request or response.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL in one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
