How to Capture a Website Screenshot with a Screenshot API in Ruby on Rails

A practical Rails guide to requesting remote website screenshots, handling image bytes and errors, choosing capture options, and using background jobs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture a screenshot of a remote website from Ruby on Rails, make a server-side HTTPS request to a screenshot API, check that the response is a successful image, then save or use its bytes. Keep the API key on the server. For captures that should not hold up a web request, enqueue the work with Active Job.

Choose a remote screenshot API, not Rails’ test screenshot helper

Rails’ built-in screenshot support is for capturing the browser state during system tests, mainly to help debug a test. It is not a hosted service for rendering an arbitrary remote URL. For that, your Rails app needs to call an external screenshot API. See the Rails testing guide for the test-related feature.

The basic flow is Rails server → screenshot API over HTTPS → rendered image bytes (or another provider-defined response) → your app or storage. Because the request is made by your server, the credential need not appear in public page markup.

Build a small Rails service for the capture

The example below uses ScreenshotOne’s documented Ruby client pattern: a GET request to its endpoint with a URL and capture options. Provider option names and response behaviors vary, so check the API documentation when switching providers. ScreenshotOne documents GET and POST requests, authentication choices, binary image responses, and error responses at Getting Started and its Screenshot Options reference.

1. Store the API key as a server-side secret

Use Rails credentials or another server-side secret store, and configure the value in each environment. Do not hard-code the key in source code or expose it in browser-visible URLs. ScreenshotOne supports key authentication in a query parameter, POST JSON, or the X-Access-Key header; for direct HTTP integrations, choose the documented method that fits your client and avoid exposing secrets in logs. Always use HTTPS: ScreenshotOne warns that HTTP can expose keys and other sensitive content in transit.

2. Request and validate image bytes

This service object raises on HTTP failures and rejects a successful response that is not an image. That keeps a provider’s JSON error body from being saved under an image filename.

Example using the ScreenshotOne Ruby gem:

class WebsiteScreenshot
  def self.capture(url)
    client = ScreenshotOne::Client.new(ENV.fetch("SCREENSHOTONE_ACCESS_KEY"))
    client.screenshot(url, {
      format: "png",
      full_page: true,
      viewport_width: 1440,
      viewport_height: 1000
    })
  end
end

ScreenshotOne publishes Ruby instructions, including its client usage, at Ruby Screenshot API. Install and configure the gem as described there. The capture options in this example are provider-specific; do not assume another API accepts identical names.

If you prefer a direct HTTP integration, ScreenshotOne’s documentation supports HTTP requests and documents its response semantics. A robust client should use a server-side key, impose an application-appropriate timeout, check the HTTP status, and check the response MIME type before storing the body. The exact Ruby HTTP library and exception classes depend on your application and provider.

3. Persist or return the result

On a successful image response, the body is binary data. You can attach it to an Active Storage record, write it to a file, or pass it to another server-side operation. Preserve the returned MIME type and choose a file extension that matches the requested format. Do not treat the response as text or save it before checking that the request succeeded and the content type is an image.

Choose capture settings for the page you need

Decide what “screenshot” means for your feature rather than accepting defaults without review. The relevant controls depend on the API. ScreenshotOne’s options reference documents its supported parameters; Urlbox’s Ruby example illustrates a different provider’s parameters, including full-page capture, dimensions, and quality.

AI Noise Reduction filters background sounds and improves voice clarity during calls. Dual speakers provide clear audio, while the full-size natural silver keyboard and HP Imagepad support comfortable typing and navigation.
  • Viewport or full page: A viewport capture returns the visible browser area; full-page capture aims to include the page beyond that area. Full-page rendering may interact with lazy-loaded content, so verify that the result includes what your use case expects.
  • Width and height: Set dimensions that match the layout you need to render. A different viewport can change responsive layouts and therefore the screenshot.
  • Format and quality: Select an image format supported by the provider. ScreenshotOne documents PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, and additional formats in its options reference. Other APIs may support a different set or use different option names.
  • Page readiness: If the page renders content after initial load, determine whether the provider offers a delay or other readiness controls, and test against the target pages. Do not assume that the first response means every client-side element has finished rendering.
  • Response mode: Confirm whether the provider returns image bytes directly or a URL/storage reference. Handle that documented response shape explicitly.

Move slow captures to Active Job

A remote render can take long enough that it is a poor fit for a user-facing request. Rails Active Job provides a common interface for background work; call perform_later to enqueue a job when the capture is long-running or non-critical to the immediate response. Rails explains the pattern in Active Job Basics and the ActiveJob API.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
class CaptureWebsiteScreenshotJob < ApplicationJob
  queue_as :default

  def perform(record_id, url)
    record = ScreenshotRecord.find(record_id)
    image_bytes = WebsiteScreenshot.capture(url)
    record.image.attach(
      io: StringIO.new(image_bytes),
      filename: "website-screenshot.png",
      content_type: "image/png"
    )
  end
end

Enqueue it from application code with CaptureWebsiteScreenshotJob.perform_later(record.id, url). In a real implementation, adapt the attachment step to the actual client response and storage model, and make the job record success or failure so the UI can report its state. Rails does not establish a universal latency threshold for when to use a job; choose based on the experience your application needs.

Validate user-supplied URLs before capture

If a user can choose the target URL, define which destinations your feature is allowed to capture and validate against that policy before sending the request. Letting a remote rendering service visit arbitrary destinations is a security design concern; the documentation cited here does not establish a Rails-specific SSRF policy or a provider-side isolation guarantee. Avoid assuming a provider makes unrestricted user input safe.

Troubleshoot failed captures

  • The app saved JSON as an image: The API likely returned an error payload. Check the HTTP status and content type before storing bytes; ScreenshotOne documents error responses with a code, message, and appropriate HTTP status.
  • The API rejects authentication: Confirm that the key is present in the server environment and that the request uses the authentication method required by the provider. Never put the secret in client-side code.
  • The page is incomplete: Review viewport dimensions, full-page behavior, output format, and any available page-readiness controls. Test against the actual page because layout and delayed content can affect the result.
  • The request delays the page response: Queue capture work with Active Job instead of making a user wait for the remote render in the request-response cycle.
  • The integration breaks after changing providers: Revisit parameter names, authentication, response MIME types, and whether the result is bytes or a reference. Similar screenshot APIs are not necessarily interchangeable.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Make a single server-side request; the response can be a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a Rails integration, use your server-side HTTP client and keep the access key in server configuration:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response handling. Before the capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page info, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
