You can broadcast a single YouTube live event in horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 at the same time. Set up dual streaming in YouTube Studio before you start: viewers browsing the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version. The stream uses one URL, one go-live notification and the same live chat in both formats. You cannot add the vertical feed after the broadcast has begun. What YouTube dual-format live streaming does
Dual-format streaming sends horizontal and vertical presentations of the same live event. YouTube routes viewers to a version based on where they watch: Shorts-feed viewers on mobile see vertical, and viewers elsewhere see horizontal. Both formats share the stream URL, go-live notification and live chat. Vertical live streams can be discovered while people browse live streams in the Shorts feed, including by viewers who do not already subscribe to your channel. Check eligibility and plan ahead
YouTube’s general live-streaming eligibility guidance says your channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live streaming activation can take time, so enable it well before your event rather than waiting until broadcast day. Check the current requirements and your channel status in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Set up dual streaming in YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Choose an existing scheduled stream or create one.
- Open the stream settings in Live Control Room and make sure Dual stream is enabled. YouTube’s default Live Control Room behavior creates horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together.
- Choose a vertical layout in the editing canvas. The options are Center crop, Fit to phone width and Stacked. Adjust the zoom and position so important faces, text and action stay visible.
- Preview the result on the intended screens and test before the event. Once the stream has started, you cannot add the vertical format. If you edited the layout through the canvas, YouTube says you can still adjust it while live.
Use the layout that suits the footage rather than assuming one is best for every show:
- Center crop: A practical choice when the main subject stays near the center of the landscape frame.
- Fit to phone width: Can preserve more of a wide shot, though it may leave unused space in the portrait presentation.
- Stacked: May work when two visual regions can be arranged vertically, such as a presenter and a separate view of the activity.

Use a third-party encoder with a separate vertical feed
If your production uses an encoder to send the feeds, select the vertical preview’s Auto menu in the Live Control Room’s Stream tab and choose Encoder. Configure RTMP(S), select a second stream key for the vertical feed, and make sure each format is sent to its corresponding key. Then start the stream from YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport in its encoder settings guidance.
A stream key is a credential that tells your encoder where to send video and lets YouTube accept the feed. Keep it private; reset it if it is compromised. The encoder workflow uses a second key for the vertical feed, unlike the built-in Live Control Room workflow. YouTube documents both paths in its live-streaming help.

What changes between vertical and horizontal
The formats share the live event, but they do not have identical features. YouTube’s comparison identifies these differences; access to ads and fan-funding features may depend on channel eligibility.

Use the horizontal format when a feature such as clickable links, live ads, Premieres or Live Redirect is central to the event. Choose dual format when vertical discovery and a portrait mobile experience matter too. Feature availability is described in YouTube’s format comparison.

Preflight and monitor the broadcast
For an encoder-based production, YouTube advises configuring the encoder well ahead of the event, checking the Live Control Room preview before starting, confirming the event is accessible on the channel or watch page and on mobile, and monitoring audio, video and stream-health messages during the broadcast. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual event. For higher-production events, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders but does not name a required model for dual-format streaming. Live Control Room combines metrics for the horizontal and vertical streams during and after the broadcast. Vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours after the stream ends. Use the combined figures for live monitoring, then return after that delay to assess vertical performance. YouTube explains the reporting in its dual-stream help and live metrics guide.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The vertical preview or format is missing: Check that Dual stream is enabled before starting. The vertical format cannot be added after the stream begins.
- The wrong footage appears in vertical: Revisit the vertical layout, zoom and position in the canvas. Check that the important subject and graphics fit the portrait frame in preview.
- The encoder feed does not reach the expected format: Confirm that the vertical feed is sent to the second stream key and the horizontal feed to its corresponding key. If a key may have been exposed, reset it.
- The preview looks fine but viewers cannot access the event: Before starting, verify accessibility on the channel or watch page and on mobile. For encoder broadcasts, review stream-health messages and monitor audio and video through the event.
- Vertical-specific analytics are not visible immediately afterward: YouTube makes vertical-only metrics available 24 hours after the stream ends; combined metrics are available during and after the broadcast.
