Firefox has no standalone tool called “XPath Finder.” What it does have are two built-in ways to locate elements with an XPath expression: the search box in the Inspector panel of Developer Tools, and the $x() helper in the Web Console. Both are part of Firefox’s developer tooling, and between them they cover the two things most people want from an XPath search: jumping to matching elements on a page, and checking what an expression returns.
In the Inspector, press Ctrl+F (Windows or Linux) or Cmd+F (macOS), type an XPath, and press Enter to move through the matches. In the Web Console, run $x("//a") (or any XPath you need) to get the matching nodes back as an array.

Method 1: Search by XPath in the Inspector
Use this method when you want to see where matching elements sit in the page’s markup and step through them one at a time.

- Open Developer Tools. Use the Web Developer menu, press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or press Cmd+Option+I on macOS.
- Select the Inspector tab.
- Click the markup search box, or press Ctrl+F (Windows or Linux) or Cmd+F (macOS) to focus it.
- Type your XPath expression. The Inspector runs full-text, CSS-selector, and XPath searches, so an expression that begins with
/or//is treated as an XPath query. - Press Enter to select the first match. Keep pressing Enter to move to later matches, or press Shift+Enter to go backwards.
The search matches elements, not characters. The documentation’s example, //a, selects every anchor element on the page. It does not find the letter “a” in the visible text. If you want text, use an expression such as //*[contains(text(), "your phrase")], which matches elements whose text contains the phrase.

Method 2: Test an XPath with the $x() helper
Use this method when you want the expression’s result rather than a visual walk through the page.
- Open Developer Tools and select the Console tab.
- Enter
$x("//a")and press Enter. The console returns an array of the matching nodes. - To run the expression relative to a specific element, pass that element as the second argument, for example
$x(".//a", someElement). If you omit the second argument, the search starts fromdocument. - To request a particular XPath result type, pass it as the third argument. Mozilla’s documentation lists
number,string,bool,node, andnodes. If you omit this argument, the helper usesANY_TYPE.
The function signature is $x(xpath, element, resultType). Only the expression is required.

In practice, write the expression in the console first to confirm it returns what you expect, then paste it into the Inspector search if you want to see the matches in context.

Limits of the built-in tools
- These features are documented in Mozilla’s Firefox Developer Tools documentation. The article describes behaviour as documented there and does not test specific Firefox release numbers, so check the documentation for your version if a shortcut or panel differs.
- Inspector search is for locating elements. If you need to act on the matches, such as clicking them or changing their attributes, you do that from the Inspector or through the console.
- XPath syntax is standard XPath, not a Firefox-specific dialect. An expression that works in the console should work in the Inspector search, but complex expressions with functions or namespaces are worth testing in the console first.
