What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A client-side image redaction tool does its detection, masking and export on your own device, inside the browser or a local app, so the original file does not have to be uploaded to a remote service. That is the core promise. Whether it holds for a given tool is something you confirm on your own machine, not something you accept from the marketing page. This guide explains what these tools do, how to verify their no-upload claims, how to redact faces and personal details so the result is actually hard to undo, and where the limits lie.
What a client-side redaction tool actually does
A redaction tool takes an image, finds the areas you want hidden, covers them, and gives you a new image to share. The reviewed tools follow the same basic sequence: they detect candidate regions, you accept or adjust them, you apply a mask, and you export.

- Face detection locates faces and places a mask over each one.
- Sensitive-text scanning, offered by some tools, looks for text that resembles personal details such as names, phone numbers or email addresses in a screenshot.
- Manual masks let you draw over anything the detector missed or got wrong, such as a name tag, a house number or a licence plate.
- Masking styles usually include blur, pixelation or a solid cover. Which of these a tool offers, and how strong each setting can be, varies by product.
The phrase “client-side” describes where this work happens. A tool that processes locally loads the image into your browser or app and never sends the pixels to its servers. A tool that uploads the image to a server for detection is not client-side, even if it deletes the file afterwards. The difference matters if the image is sensitive in itself, because an upload means a copy has left your control before any redaction takes place.
The tools behind the category
Three browser-based tools are described in vendor materials, and one native Apple option is also described by its vendor. The table below records only what each vendor states. Where a vendor did not specify something, the cell says so rather than guessing.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| PrivaCanvas | Canvas work happens in the browser | Face masking | Manual redaction; other styles not stated | Generates a new PNG without copying source EXIF metadata |

Every claim in this table comes from the vendors themselves. None of the tools has been independently audited in the material available here, and no comparable measurement of detection accuracy was found. That means this is a map of what each product says it does, not a ranking. Choose on the criteria that matter to your images: whether you can check the processing, whether you can add manual masks, which masking styles you need, what the exported file contains, and which platform you work on.
Verifying the no-upload claim yourself
RedactCam’s own material suggests a practical test, and it works for any browser tool. Its stated line is: “You can verify this yourself with the browser’s DevTools Network tab while processing, or by going offline.”

- Open the redaction page in a desktop browser. Press F12, or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows and Linux or Cmd+Option+I on macOS, to open DevTools.
- Select the Network tab and click the clear control so the list is empty.
- Load a test image and run the detection or masking step.
- Look for requests that send your image or a large data payload to a remote address. Upload requests are usually labelled as POST or show a large request size.
- Repeat the test with the network disconnected, for example by switching your device to airplane mode or turning off Wi-Fi. A tool that truly processes locally should still detect, mask and export.
Treat a clean result as evidence, not proof. The Network tab shows the traffic a page makes in that session. It does not reveal every dependency, a delayed or conditional request, or what the code does with the image. The check is useful for catching an obvious upload; it does not replace a code review.

Why blur is not the same as anonymization
A blurred face can still be reconstructed in some cases. A paper titled “Restoring Gaussian Blurred Face Images for Deanonymization Attacks” reports work on restoring blurred faces and cautions against using Gaussian blur for face anonymization. The summary available for this guide does not describe the evaluation conditions or quantify the risk, so read the paper directly before drawing any methodological or scientific conclusion from it.

Satisfy your different daily uses as needed.
- 【BETTER HD CLARTIY】Mamol 24 inch computer privacy screen Shield adds an extra layer of AR Ultra HD light transmission compared to others. Even after prolonged use, you will get a brand new privacy screen for your desktop computer monitor after cleaning. Very Durable!
The practical advice does not depend on the study’s details. For sensitive images, prefer:
- a solid, opaque cover over the region, which removes the pixels entirely;
- pixelation strong enough that individual features cannot be read, which is a more cautious choice than a soft blur.
A soft Gaussian blur is acceptable for low-stakes presentation, but it should not be your choice when someone’s identity is the thing you are trying to protect.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Checking detection before you export
Automatic detection can miss faces or text, and it can also mark the wrong area. Vendor pages describe their detection features, but the material reviewed here gives no independent accuracy figures, so assume nothing is caught until you have looked.
- Run automatic detection if the tool offers it, then look at every highlighted region at full size.
- Remove boxes that cover nothing sensitive if the tool lets you, so the image is not cluttered with false areas.
- Draw manual masks over anything missed: side profiles, small or distant faces, reflections, name badges, email addresses, phone numbers and account IDs in screenshots.
- Check edges and overlapping text. A mask that stops a few pixels short can leave a readable fragment.
- Zoom into each masked area before exporting and confirm that no original detail is visible underneath.
Checking the exported file
Vendors describe different export behaviour. PrivaCanvas says its PNG is new and does not carry source EXIF metadata. RedactCam says re-encoding strips EXIF and GPS data. RedactPix describes a flattened PNG with metadata stripped. These are statements about what each product does, and the reviewed material does not show how they perform on every file type or camera.

If location or device data matters, do not rely on the statement. Open the exported file in a metadata viewer or your operating system’s file properties and confirm that EXIF and GPS fields are absent. Then open the image itself and confirm the masked areas are opaque in the saved file, not only in the editor. Flattening matters here: a layered or editable export could still hold the original content underneath a mask.
Choosing a tool for your use
The reviewed tools are not ranked, because the available evidence does not establish comparable detection accuracy, language coverage, performance limits or security audits. Use this checklist to compare them on your own images:
- Processing: does the no-upload claim survive the Network tab and offline test described above?
- Manual control: can you add masks by hand and remove automatic ones?
- Masking: does it offer a solid cover or strong pixelation, not only blur?
- Detection scope: does it cover faces only, or also sensitive text and licence plates?
- Export: is the output flattened, and does it strip metadata in a way you can verify?
- Platform and formats: does it run on your browser or device and accept the file types you use?
Tool features, platforms and availability change over time, so confirm them on the vendor’s current page before you rely on a specific workflow.
