Wowza nDVR and YouTube Live DVR are separate features. Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR records a live source for rewind and resume playback from Wowza over HLS or MPEG-DASH; YouTube has its own DVR controls for viewers on YouTube. The available documentation does not establish that Wowza’s nDVR window or playback controls carry through to YouTube, nor does it specify a complete Wowza-to-YouTube ingest workflow. First identify which Wowza product you use and where viewers will watch, then configure and test the matching DVR path.
First decide what “DVR” should do
There are two distinct viewing destinations, with different controls:

- Viewers watch on YouTube: YouTube Live DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream when DVR is enabled. These are YouTube playback controls, not Wowza nDVR controls. YouTube says that if a creator disables DVR, viewers cannot seek back during the live stream; a full recording may still be available after the stream ends. YouTube Help: Live streaming DVR.
- Viewers watch a Wowza-served stream: Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR records an incoming live stream and makes time-shift playback available through HLS or MPEG-DASH. Wowza’s documentation does not say that its DVR controls are passed through to a YouTube destination. Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR setup.
Do not assume that enabling one feature enables the other. If YouTube is the audience destination, verify YouTube’s DVR setting in the live-stream setup. If you want a separate rewindable Wowza playback feed, configure Wowza nDVR for that feed and test it with the player that will serve it.

Identify which Wowza product you have
The setup depends on whether you use Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video. Their controls are not interchangeable: Streaming Engine uses application-level DVR configuration and playback URLs; Wowza Video exposes a playlist setting on a CDN stream target.

Confirm the product in your account and identify the playback destination before changing settings. For either product, use its current documentation and verify the YouTube ingest procedure separately; the documented material cited here does not establish the exact Wowza-to-YouTube endpoint, stream-key workflow, encoder profile or reconnect steps.
Configure nDVR in Wowza Streaming Engine
Before enabling recording
- Use a live application and confirm that the incoming source has aligned audio and video. Wowza says short keyframe intervals and synchronized audio/video work best. Wowza nDVR quick-start.
- Check the source codecs. Wowza’s quick-start lists H.264 video, AAC audio and MP3 audio among supported stream types/codecs; an unsupported source codec can prevent recording. Transcoding may be an option where supported for ingest, but verify compatibility in your deployment. Wowza nDVR quick-start.
- For MPEG-DASH nDVR, Wowza documentation specifies Wowza Streaming Engine 4.7.6 or later. Confirm the version and current license status before relying on the feature. Wowza says perpetual and subscription licenses enable integrated nDVR; licenses purchased before 2015 may require contacting Wowza. Wowza nDVR setup; quick-start.
Enable and configure nDVR in Manager
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, select the live application that receives your source.
- Open the application’s nDVR section, enable nDVR, and configure the DVR store directory and recording/playback behavior.
- Choose how much recorded material viewers can access. All material available exposes the entire recording and preserves it after the stream ends. Use window duration exposes a rolling window; material older than that window is purged. Wowza documents a minimum window duration of 60 seconds. Wowza nDVR setup.
- Set whether playback URLs require the DVR query parameter and whether the application supports live and DVR streaming, as required by your playback design.
- Save the configuration and restart the application or service as directed by Manager so the changes take effect.
XML configuration and playback checks
Wowza also documents an XML configuration route. It requires the DVR recorder and store settings, the DVR streaming packetizer, and packetizers for the output protocols. Use the product guide for the exact configuration syntax and locations rather than copying settings from another application or version. Wowza nDVR setup.

- Publish the live source to the Wowza application and first confirm ordinary live playback.
- Test recording and then test DVR playback using the appropriate HLS or MPEG-DASH URL. Include the DVR query parameter if your application requires it.
- Test seeking within the configured window, and after the source ends if you selected the full-material behavior.
- Do not use RTMP or RTSP URLs to test nDVR playback; the setup guide says those protocols do not support it.
Configure the rewind window in Wowza Video
For Wowza Video, set Playlist Seconds on the Wowza CDN stream target. The documentation accessed in 2026 gives an accepted range of 6 to 28,800 seconds (8 hours), with a documented default of 100 seconds. The related Video REST API property is playlistSeconds. These values describe the Wowza Video playlist rewind depth, not YouTube’s DVR window. Player support varies; Wowza’s API guide specifically says nDVR does not work with Wowza Player. Test your intended player before scheduling a broadcast, including seeking backward and resuming live playback.

Plan for a 24/7 source, storage and recovery
Continuous operation needs more than an enabled DVR option. Wowza warns that recording can be interrupted when the live source disconnects. Its documentation describes a default stream timeout of five minutes to allow for encoder disconnects and restarts. Validate what happens during a disconnect and reconnect in your own deployment; do not treat that timeout as a guarantee that recording or delivery will be uninterrupted. Wowza nDVR setup.
The documented material does not provide a storage-capacity formula. Estimate storage from your actual encoded stream and retention plan, reserve sufficient disk space, and monitor it during a representative run. Decide separately whether you need the entire recording retained or only a rolling window; a rolling window purges older material outside its configured duration.

- Verify source codec support and audio/video alignment with the actual encoder output.
- Test encoder restart and source reconnection, and observe whether recording resumes as expected.
- Check the configured DVR store directory, available capacity, retention behavior and playback after a reconnect.
- Monitor the live source and playback path; a successful local Wowza DVR test does not by itself prove YouTube ingest or YouTube playback behavior.
- Confirm YouTube’s current ingest instructions and live DVR setting in YouTube Studio before the broadcast. The exact Wowza-to-YouTube route and encoder values are not established by the cited Wowza materials here.
Wowza Video’s API describes a “24×7 channel” as unlimited stream time for one channel. That description alone does not establish YouTube ingest constraints or guarantee uninterrupted delivery to YouTube. Wowza Video API reference.
