If WordPress shows “There has been a critical error on this website,” use the Recovery Mode link sent to the site administrator. After you authenticate, WordPress pauses the plugin or theme that triggered the fatal PHP error for your administrator session, allowing you to reach the dashboard, deactivate or repair the extension, and test the site normally.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Recovery Mode is a containment tool, not a backup or automatic repair. The faulty code still needs to be updated, corrected, replaced, or left deactivated before you exit the session.

What WordPress Recovery Mode does
Recovery Mode is a built-in WordPress feature introduced in WordPress 5.2. It activates when WordPress detects a fatal PHP error while handling a normal page request. Faulty or incompatible plugins, themes, and recently edited custom code are common triggers.
Without Recovery Mode, a fatal error can produce a blank page, a “White Screen of Death,” or a generic critical-error message that also blocks the administrator dashboard. Recovery Mode changes that outcome by isolating the extension associated with the fatal error for one administrator session. You can then log in and work around the failure instead of being locked out.

The pause is session-specific. Other visitors and other administrators are not automatically given a permanent fix, and the extension is not removed. Recovery Mode also does not restore a backup, roll back a release, clean malware, repair a damaged database, or solve a server outage.
When Recovery Mode appears
WordPress normally sends an administrator email when it detects a qualifying fatal error. The message explains that a technical problem occurred and includes a time-limited link to a special login screen. The dashboard notice after login identifies the plugin, theme, or code path that WordPress associated with the failure.
The email is usually generated before a mail-changing plugin has loaded. Consequently, a plugin that normally controls outgoing mail may not be able to affect this particular message. Delivery can still fail because the administrator address is wrong, the web server is misconfigured, the message is filtered as spam, or the host has a poor mail reputation.
Prepare before changing anything
- Confirm which site is affected if you administer several WordPress installations.
- Have the administrator username and password ready. The email link does not replace normal authentication.
- Note what changed immediately before the failure: a plugin or theme update, a new installation, a PHP change, or an edit to custom code.
- If the site is business-critical, record the exact error time and preserve any host error-log entry before making changes. That information helps identify a second fault if the first extension is not the true root cause.
- Do not repeatedly refresh a failing front end while logged out. Each request can generate another fatal-error notification and make the symptoms harder to read.
Step-by-step: use the Recovery Mode email
1. Find the administrator message
Search the site administrator’s inbox for the WordPress technical-issue message. Check junk, spam, quarantine, and any security gateway that holds automated mail. Verify the address configured as the site administrator; it may not be the address you personally use for routine notifications.
The login URL is temporary. If it has expired and the same error occurs again, WordPress core can send a new link. Use the newest message rather than an older URL saved in a browser or password manager.
2. Open the link and authenticate
Open the link from the affected site’s administrator email and complete the normal WordPress login. A valid link takes you to the dashboard with a Recovery Mode notice. If the link opens the wrong domain, shows an invalid session, or loops back to login, close old tabs and open the most recent email in a fresh browser session.

3. Read the notice before deactivating anything
The notice names the extension WordPress connected to the fatal error and points you to the appropriate screen. A plugin failure normally leads to Plugins; a theme failure normally leads to Appearance > Themes. Read the complete message, including the file and line information when supplied. A named extension is the best starting point, but a fatal error can expose a compatibility problem between more than one component.
4. Contain the failure
Choose the least destructive action that restores a testable site:
- Deactivate a plugin: In Plugins > Installed Plugins, select the named plugin and click Deactivate. Leave it off while you test the front end and dashboard.
- Switch a broken theme: In Appearance > Themes, activate a known-working installed theme. This changes presentation but keeps your content and settings in place.
- Update a compatible extension: If the notice identifies an available update that explicitly supports your WordPress and PHP environment, update it, then retest. An update is a repair only when it addresses the compatibility defect; installing unrelated updates during an outage adds variables.
- Undo custom code: Revert the recent edit in a controlled copy of the file or remove the newly added snippet. Do not paste an untested replacement directly into a production theme or plugin file without preserving the original.
Deactivation is immediate containment. It does not correct the code, migrate its settings, or guarantee that the site will remain healthy when the extension is re-enabled.
5. Test while still in Recovery Mode
Open the front end in a separate tab, visit the dashboard, and exercise the page or feature that failed. Test as a logged-out visitor as well as an administrator, because your administrator session has the faulty extension paused. If the site works only while you are logged in, do not assume the problem is fixed: another visitor may still encounter the fatal path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the same fatal error persists, return to the notice and inspect whether a second extension is implicated. Disable only the next suspect, one at a time, so you can identify the component that changes the result. If no extension is identified, preserve the complete error text and move to host-level diagnostics rather than guessing.
6. Exit Recovery Mode deliberately
After applying and testing a fix, click Exit Recovery Mode in the admin-bar control or the Recovery Mode notice. Core clears the Recovery Mode cookie and the paused-plugin and paused-theme state when you exit. The extension must therefore be genuinely fixed or remain deactivated; exiting does not keep a broken extension safely paused.

Close the Recovery Mode tab, start a new private or logged-out browser session, and load the home page, a representative post, the login page, and the dashboard. Confirm that forms, media, menus, and any feature tied to the repaired extension behave normally. Check the host error log after the test for a new fatal entry.
How to repair the extension after access is restored
Plugin identified
Keep the plugin deactivated while checking its changelog, compatibility information, and the date of the last successful site backup. If a maintained release addresses the exact failure, update it and test with other nonessential plugins disabled. If the plugin has no compatible release, replace it with a supported alternative or restore the previous known-good version from your deployment process. Do not reactivate it merely because the dashboard loads.
Theme identified
Switching themes proves that the active theme is involved; it does not repair templates, child-theme code, or custom functions. Compare the active theme’s recent edits with the error file and line. Correct the code in a development or staging copy, deploy the tested change, and only then reactivate the theme. If you cannot access a working theme through the dashboard, use the file-manager fallback described below.
Custom code or an unclear source
Fatal errors can result from code in a must-use plugin, a child theme, an integration, or a PHP version mismatch. Use the exact file path, function name, and line number from the notice or server log to narrow the search. A generic “critical error” without a component name is not evidence that the last plugin installed is responsible. Keep a record of each change and test after each one.
If the Recovery Mode email never arrives
Check delivery first
- Confirm the administrator email in the site’s general settings or hosting panel.
- Search spam, quarantine, and mail-security logs for the site domain and the message subject.
- Ask the host whether PHP-generated mail is permitted and whether outbound mail is being rejected.
- Check whether a recent DNS, mail-domain, or hosting migration changed the server’s ability to send mail.
Because the message may be sent directly by the web server before a mail plugin loads, changing settings inside a plugin that is not loading cannot restore delivery. Correct the address or server mail configuration, then reproduce the fatal request once to trigger a fresh, time-limited link.
Use the host’s file manager or FTP
If you cannot obtain the link but can reach the hosting file manager or FTP, temporarily rename the directory of the suspected plugin. For example, rename /wp-content/plugins/hello-dolly to /wp-content/plugins/hello-dolly-1/. WordPress will no longer find that plugin at its original path and should deactivate it, allowing the dashboard to load.

Apply the same method only to the plugin identified by the error message or log. Do not rename the entire wp-content/plugins directory unless you are intentionally performing a broad emergency isolation and understand that every plugin will be disabled. After access returns, restore the original directory name if you need to inspect or update the plugin, then leave the plugin deactivated until its code is repaired.
When file access is unavailable
If both the dashboard and file access are unavailable, contact the hosting provider or a qualified WordPress professional. A host can inspect PHP and web-server logs, restore a known-good file, or address a service-level failure that Recovery Mode cannot reach. A server outage, exhausted resources, broken permissions, or an inaccessible control panel is not repaired by a WordPress login link.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right recovery route
| Route | Email available? | Dashboard login? | Failing extension identified? | FTP or file manager needed? | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery Mode link | Yes | Yes, after authentication | Usually, in the notice | No | Pauses the faulty extension for the current administrator session; you then deactivate, update, or edit it. |
| New Recovery Mode email | After correcting delivery | Yes, with the new link | Usually, in the notice | No | Same process with a fresh time-limited session URL. |
| Directory rename | No | Often, after the plugin is hidden | Only if logs identify it | Yes | Temporarily prevents WordPress from loading one plugin; code is not repaired. |
| Hosting support | No | Not required initially | Host logs may identify it | No, if the host performs the work | Can address mail, PHP, permissions, resource, or server failures beyond WordPress. |
Use the first route when the email and dashboard are available. Use a directory rename when the extension is known but the message is inaccessible. Escalate when the failure is not extension-specific or the hosting layer cannot be reached through normal controls.
What Recovery Mode guarantees—and what it does not
The developer function wp_is_recovery_mode() reports whether the current request is in Recovery Mode. WordPress core uses that state to pause plugins or themes associated with a White Screen of Death for the affected client. The core Recovery Mode implementation includes initialization, error handling, exit, and cleanup; its exit process removes the recovery cookie and clears paused plugins and themes.
Those guarantees explain two common surprises. First, an administrator may see a working site while a logged-out browser still fails because the pause applies to the administrator session. Second, closing the browser or waiting for the link to expire is not a repair. The underlying extension remains capable of producing the same fatal error on a normal request.
Troubleshooting common failure cases
The link says it is invalid or expired
Request or trigger a new message by reproducing the error, then use the latest email. Ensure your browser accepts cookies and that the site URL in the message matches the installation’s current domain, including HTTPS.
Best Value
The dashboard opens but the front end still fails
Your administrator session may be hiding the extension’s failure. Test in a private window and while logged out. If the public request still fails, keep the extension deactivated and inspect the error log for another plugin, theme, or server-level cause.
No extension is named
Save the full error text, file path, function, and line number. Check host PHP logs and recent deployment changes. Avoid disabling every plugin at once unless you are following a deliberate isolation plan; broad changes remove the evidence needed to identify the conflict.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExiting Recovery Mode brings the error back
That result means the extension was paused but not fixed. Re-enter with a fresh link if needed, deactivate or repair the extension, and repeat testing in a normal logged-out session before exiting again.
The site is down before WordPress can show an error
Recovery Mode requires WordPress to execute far enough to detect and handle the fatal error. DNS failure, a completely unavailable server, a PHP service that will not start, or inaccessible hosting controls requires host intervention rather than dashboard steps.
After the site is stable
- Record the extension, version, error message, file, and line that caused the incident.
- Keep the repaired or replacement code in a version-controlled or otherwise recoverable copy.
- Re-enable one extension at a time, testing the front end and dashboard after each change.
- Verify that scheduled tasks, forms, checkout or membership flows, media uploads, and authenticated and anonymous views work as expected.
- Review the administrator and server mail settings so the next Recovery Mode notification can arrive.
- Maintain current backups and a staging or development workflow so future updates can be tested before production.
Recovery Mode is most valuable when treated as a controlled entry point: isolate the failing extension, identify and correct the underlying defect, verify the site outside the privileged session, and only then return to normal operation.
