How to Remove the Extra Login Popup on WordPress wp-admin

If WordPress shows a browser-generated username-and-password box before its normal login page, a second HTTP Basic Authentication layer is protecting the request. WordPress itself normally redirects a logged-out visit to /wp-admin/ to wp-login.php, which displays an HTML form. Remove or narrow the server, hosting-panel, reverse-proxy, staging, or security-plugin rule that issued the browser challenge; do not edit or delete wp-login.php or WordPress core files.

The quickest safe approach is to identify which layer owns the prompt, disable that rule through the same layer, then test every route your site uses. A full-directory password gate can affect more than administrators: it may block admin-ajax.php, frontend login rewrites, REST integrations, mobile apps, Jetpack, or single sign-on.

What the extra popup means

Two different login experiences

A browser-native credential dialog is generated by the web server or an intermediary, not by the WordPress login template. It usually indicates HTTP Basic Authentication. The standard WordPress page is an HTML form rendered by wp-login.php, normally reached after WordPress redirects a logged-out request for /wp-admin/.

That distinction matters because the two prompts have different owners. Changing a WordPress user password cannot remove a server challenge, and clearing the browser cannot delete a rule in a configuration file or hosting control panel.

Why users describe it as “logging in twice”

The first prompt authenticates against a server-side username and password. After it succeeds, the request continues to WordPress, which still requires a WordPress account. The result is a browser dialog followed by the familiar WordPress login form. If the browser dialog is cancelled or its credentials are rejected, WordPress may never receive the request.

Find the layer that issued the challenge

Check the controls in the order that matches how the site is operated. If you cannot reach wp-admin, use SFTP or the host’s file manager rather than trying to repair the problem from inside WordPress.

Server configuration

Look for HTTP authentication rules in the site’s .htaccess file on Apache-based hosting or in the Nginx server configuration. A rule may target only /wp-admin/, the login endpoint, the whole document root, or a staging host. If the popup began immediately after a configuration edit, that change is the strongest lead.

Hosting-panel password protection

Many hosting panels expose a “Password Protect,” “Directory Privacy,” or similarly named control. These settings can create Basic Auth without putting an obvious rule in WordPress. Inspect protection for the document root, /wp-admin/, and wp-login.php, including controls inherited from a staging site.

Security plugin

A security plugin can add HTTP authentication or a maintenance gate. If the plugin’s setting is wrong and wp-admin is inaccessible, temporarily disable it by renaming its directory through SFTP or the hosting file manager. Correct the setting before activating it again.

Reverse proxy, firewall, or staging gate

A reverse proxy, managed firewall, or staging platform may challenge requests before they reach the origin server. A popup that appears on a staging hostname but not production usually belongs to that environment’s access gate. Ask the person who manages the proxy or staging service to inspect the rule if you do not have access to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Possible owner Where to inspect Typical scope Best recovery path when locked out
Apache server .htaccess and virtual-host settings Directory, login endpoint, or entire site Restore the previous file or remove the Basic Auth rule, then reload the site
Nginx server Server or location configuration A location block such as /wp-admin/ or the whole host Revert the configuration and reload through the host’s normal process
Hosting panel Directory-password or privacy controls Selected directory or inherited site path Turn off protection in the panel or ask hosting support to narrow it
Security plugin Plugin settings or plugin directory Admin, login, maintenance, or selected routes Rename the plugin directory via SFTP/file manager, regain access, and fix its setting
Proxy or staging service Proxy, firewall, or staging access policy Hostname, path, or environment Use the configured staging credentials or have the service owner remove the gate

Prepare before removing anything

  • Record whether the dialog appears on production, staging, or both.
  • Note the exact URL that triggers it: /wp-admin/, wp-login.php, another path, or every page.
  • Save a copy of the current .htaccess or server configuration before editing.
  • Confirm that you can use SFTP, a hosting file manager, or the hosting panel if the change blocks access.
  • List site functions that may rely on protected routes, including frontend login rewrites, AJAX requests, REST integrations, mobile apps, Jetpack, and single sign-on.
  • Do not delete core files, replace wp-login.php, or disable unrelated security controls while investigating.

Remove or narrow the rule safely

When the rule is in .htaccess

  1. Open the site’s .htaccess through SFTP or the hosting file manager and download a backup.
  2. Find the directives that enable Basic Authentication or point to a password-file. The relevant block may sit above or below WordPress’s rewrite section.
  3. Remove only the authentication block, or restore the previous known-good version if the popup followed a recent edit.
  4. Save the file, wait for the host to apply it, and request /wp-admin/ again. The expected result is a WordPress HTML login form rather than a browser credential dialog.
  5. If the site needs an additional gate, protect only the intended environment or narrow path and explicitly test the exceptions described below.

Do not erase unrelated rewrite rules. A damaged rewrite section can create redirects or make normal WordPress routes fail even after the popup is gone.

When the rule is in Nginx

  1. Open the active server or location configuration through the hosting control or the administrator who manages Nginx.
  2. Identify the location that applies HTTP authentication. Determine whether it covers /wp-admin/, wp-login.php, the document root, or a staging host.
  3. Remove the authentication setting if it is not required, or change the location scope so required public and integration paths are not challenged.
  4. Validate and reload the configuration using the host’s normal procedure. If you cannot reload it yourself, give the exact location and desired scope to hosting support.
  5. Retest both the login page and the rest of the site after the reload.

When a hosting panel created it

  1. Open the panel’s directory-protection or privacy feature.
  2. Inspect protection inherited by the site root, /wp-admin/, and wp-login.php.
  3. Disable the gate if it is accidental. For a staging site, keep it only when the extra barrier is intentional and you have the configured credentials.
  4. Save the change, then test in a private browser window so an old authenticated session does not obscure the result.

When a security plugin caused it

  1. Use SFTP or the hosting file manager to locate the plugin directory.
  2. Rename that directory temporarily; this disables the plugin without deleting its files.
  3. Open the site and confirm that the browser popup has disappeared.
  4. Re-enable the plugin only after changing the setting that added HTTP authentication, or leave it disabled while its administrator reviews the configuration.
  5. Test the login, AJAX, REST, and any connected services before considering the incident closed.

When a staging or maintenance gate caused it

Use the credentials configured for that staging environment if the gate is deliberate. If the goal is to remove it, turn off the staging password in the staging platform or ask its administrator to do so. Do not remove production protections merely because a staging hostname is inaccessible; first confirm which environment you are changing.

When a reverse proxy or firewall caused it

The origin’s WordPress files may be correct while the proxy still challenges requests. Inspect the proxy policy for the hostname and path, then remove or narrow the Basic Auth requirement there. Purging a cache alone will not remove an active authentication rule.

Choose the correct route scope

Protecting every request under /wp-admin/ adds a second barrier around the administration area, login screen, and files. WordPress Developer Resources describes this explicitly: “Adding server-side password protection (such as BasicAuth) to /wp-admin/ adds a second layer of protection around your blog’s admin area, the login screen, and your files.” The same broad scope can also interfere with application traffic that uses paths beneath or alongside the administration area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Site function What an overly broad gate can do What to verify after narrowing protection
WordPress administration Leaves the browser dialog in front of the normal WordPress login /wp-admin/ reaches wp-login.php and an authenticated administrator can load the dashboard
AJAX Blocks requests to wp-admin/admin-ajax.php Frontend forms, filters, and interactive widgets complete their requests
Frontend login rewrites Challenges visitors before the rewritten login route reaches WordPress The public login URL opens its normal HTML form
REST integrations Returns an authentication challenge to connected services Required REST clients receive the response they expect
Mobile apps and Jetpack Prevents the service from reaching its WordPress endpoint Connection, publishing, and synchronization functions still work
Single sign-on Stops the SSO flow before WordPress can process it Sign-in and callback routes complete without a browser prompt

If the extra layer is required, scope it to the smallest environment and path that accomplishes its purpose. Document every exception so a later server or plugin change does not silently reapply a full-directory challenge.

Recover when you are completely locked out

Popup appears after an .htaccess edit

Restore the backup of the previous file, or remove only the newly added Basic Auth block. If you cannot edit the file, use the host’s file manager or request a rollback from support. Once the site responds normally, make a narrower change rather than deleting all server rules.

Popup began after enabling a plugin

Rename the suspected plugin directory through SFTP or the hosting file manager. This is reversible: restore the original directory name after correcting its configuration. If several security plugins are present, disable the one most closely associated with HTTP authentication first and change one variable at a time.

Only staging is blocked

Use the staging credentials supplied by the environment owner, or remove the staging password gate in that platform. Verify the hostname before changing anything so a production site is not accidentally exposed or altered.

Host-managed rule

Tell hosting support that a browser-native Basic Auth prompt is protecting /wp-admin/, wp-login.php, the site root, or a specific staging host. Ask them to remove it or narrow it while preserving any required exceptions for AJAX, REST, mobile, Jetpack, or SSO traffic.

At no point should recovery involve deleting WordPress core files or modifying wp-login.php; those actions do not own the server challenge and can create a separate outage.

Clear stale authentication state and retest

  1. Close the authenticated browser session and clear cookies and cached data for the site.
  2. Open a private window and request /wp-admin/.
  3. Confirm that a logged-out request redirects to wp-login.php and displays the WordPress form without a browser dialog.
  4. Sign in, open the dashboard, and visit the site frontend in a separate tab.
  5. Exercise every relevant route: frontend login, forms or widgets that use admin-ajax.php, REST-connected features, mobile or Jetpack connections, and SSO callbacks.
  6. Repeat the test on the staging hostname if the change was environment-specific.

Cookie clearing is useful only when stale authentication state is involved. It cannot remove a server, hosting-panel, proxy, or plugin rule that is still active.

Fix loops that remain after the popup is gone

A redirect loop is a different symptom from a credential dialog. If the browser keeps bouncing between URLs, inspect HTTPS handling, the values of WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL, caching, firewall behavior, and proxy redirects. Make sure the proxy and origin agree on the site’s canonical scheme and hostname, and purge any cache that stored the old redirect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one path loops, compare its protection and rewrite scope with a working path. A route-specific rule, rather than WordPress authentication itself, may still be intercepting the request.

Compare the available remedies

Remedy Configuration layer Route scope Effect on integrations Reversibility when locked out
Remove an accidental server rule Apache .htaccess or Nginx Exactly the directory, location, host, or site covered by the rule Restores normal WordPress, AJAX, REST, app, Jetpack, and SSO access when those paths were challenged High if a backup or previous configuration is available
Narrow intentional protection Server or proxy Smallest required environment and path Preserves the extra barrier while reducing interference with frontend and API traffic High when the administrator controls the configuration; otherwise host support is required
Disable a hosting-panel gate Hosting control panel Directory or inherited site path Removes the challenge from every function inside that scope High if panel access remains available
Disable or reconfigure the plugin WordPress security plugin Plugin-defined admin, login, maintenance, or route rules May restore all affected WordPress and integration paths, but other plugin protections remain to be reviewed High through SFTP or the file manager by renaming the plugin directory
Remove a staging gate Staging platform or proxy Staging hostname or selected paths Leaves production unchanged and restores access to the development environment Depends on staging-platform or owner access

When keeping an extra password is appropriate

A second server-side password can be reasonable for a private staging or development environment. Keep it only when the gate is intentional, its credentials are documented, and its route scope has been tested against the environment’s required AJAX, REST, app, Jetpack, and SSO traffic. On a public production site, an unexplained browser popup is usually evidence of a mis-scoped or forgotten rule rather than a WordPress login feature.

A concise decision path

  1. Browser dialog before the WordPress form: investigate HTTP Basic Auth.
  2. Popup only on staging: inspect the staging password gate first.
  3. Popup appeared after a file edit: restore or narrow the .htaccess or Nginx rule.
  4. Popup appeared after enabling a security plugin: disable it through SFTP or the file manager and correct its setting.
  5. Popup affects every route: inspect the site root, hosting panel, and reverse proxy rather than only /wp-admin/.
  6. Popup is gone but requests loop: check HTTPS, WP_HOME, WP_SITEURL, caching, firewall, and proxy redirects.
  7. After every change, retest the WordPress form and all routes the site depends on.
