WordPress can be the public home for your podcast, but podcast apps do not read your web pages directly. They read an RSS feed generated from your WordPress podcast posts. Set up the site, create one dedicated podcast category, complete the show metadata, publish an episode with an enclosure, then submit that feed to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other directories.

Understand what WordPress does in a podcast setup
A WordPress podcast website has two connected parts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The website: your show page, episode pages, transcripts, links, contact information and search-engine content.
- The RSS feed: a machine-readable list of the show and its episodes. Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other apps fetch this feed and display new episodes when it changes.
Publishing an audio file on a normal WordPress page is not enough. The episode must be published in the podcast system, with the audio recorded as an RSS enclosure and the episode assigned to the category that powers the show feed. Directories then use the enclosure URL, title, description, publication date and globally unique identifier (GUID) to decide what to display and download.
That distinction also explains why a change on your site can take time to appear in an app. Directory services poll feeds on their own schedules; WordPress.com notes that updates can take from hours to days to appear.

Choose WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress
Decide where WordPress will run before designing the site. The two approaches can publish the same kind of RSS feed, but they differ in who manages audio storage, updates and podcast settings.
| Decision area | WordPress.com with Jetpack Podcast | Self-hosted WordPress with a podcast plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Guided podcast setup and a managed WordPress environment. | You install WordPress, choose hosting, configure the site and install a podcast plugin. |
| Audio hosting | Free can publish a feed while audio is hosted elsewhere. Premium and higher plans add WordPress.com audio hosting; the 2026 Premium example documents 13 GB of audio storage. | Audio can live on your web host or an external podcast host, depending on the plugin and your hosting limits. |
| Episode workflow | A podcast category, episode editor and distribution controls are integrated into the WordPress.com dashboard. | The plugin supplies episode fields, enclosure handling and feed settings; exact labels vary by plugin. |
| Analytics | Eligible WordPress.com plans provide listener statistics and an episode dashboard. Plays inside Spotify are counted in Spotify, not in WordPress.com podcast statistics. | Analytics depend on your plugin, web host and any external podcast host. A normal web-traffic report is not automatically a download or listener report. |
| Control | Less server maintenance and fewer infrastructure decisions. | More control over themes, plugins, redirects, storage and custom feed configuration, with more responsibility for updates and compatibility. |
| Distribution | Copy the feed URL from the podcast distribution screen and submit it to directories. | Copy the feed URL generated by your plugin and submit it manually unless the plugin or host provides an integration. |
Choose WordPress.com when you want the shortest managed path and are comfortable with its plan limits. Choose self-hosted WordPress when you need server-level control, a particular plugin or an external host’s storage and analytics. In either case, keep the feed URL, enclosure URLs and GUIDs stable after launch.

Prepare the information and files your show needs
Show identity and ownership details
Gather these values before opening the podcast settings:
- Show title and a short, accurate summary.
- Host or talent name.
- An owner email address you can monitor. Directory services may use it for verification or ownership notices.
- Copyright statement.
- The most specific Apple Podcasts category that fits the show.
- Whether the show contains explicit language or themes. Mark the feed honestly; do not rely on a warning in an episode description.
Use the same spelling of the title and host name in the feed, site header and directory submissions. Inconsistent names make it harder for listeners to recognize the official listing.
Prepare square cover art
WordPress.com documents square JPG or PNG artwork between 1,400 × 1,400 and 3,000 × 3,000 pixels. Export it in standard RGB color space. CMYK artwork can be rejected by Apple or Spotify. Keep the title readable at thumbnail size and avoid placing important text at the extreme edges, where app interfaces may crop it.
Choose an audio format
For the broadest compatibility documented by WordPress.com, upload MP3 files. Spotify does not accept M4A for this workflow, and Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not accept OGG or WAV. If your recorder produces WAV, export a compatible MP3 before attaching the episode; retain the original WAV as your production master rather than using it as the feed enclosure.
Plan the first release
You need at least one published episode with media before the feed is ready for directory submission. A short trailer is optional, but Apple Podcasts for Creators suggests a one- to two-minute trailer as a useful introduction. Make the first episode representative of the show because it is what a new visitor can play while the directory listing is being reviewed.
Set up a podcast on WordPress.com
1. Create or select the site
Sign in to WordPress.com and open the site that will represent the show. Complete the site’s basic title, tagline and public visibility settings before submitting a feed. A private, password-protected or coming-soon site can prevent directory crawlers from reading the RSS document or downloading its enclosure.

2. Enable Jetpack Podcast and choose the podcast category
Open the podcast setup in the WordPress.com dashboard and create a dedicated category, such as “Podcast Episodes.” Jetpack Podcast uses the selected category to determine which posts become episodes and which posts appear in the podcast feed. Do not mix unrelated blog posts into that category.
Choose the category carefully. Changing it after you submit the show changes the feed URL, so Apple, Spotify and every other directory must be pointed to the new URL and may require a new review or resubmission.
3. Enter the show metadata
Fill in the title, short summary, host or talent, owner email, copyright, Apple category and explicit-content setting. Upload the square RGB artwork and check it on both a light and dark background. A missing or invalid image can hold up directory approval even when the RSS file itself is reachable.
4. Confirm your audio-hosting arrangement
On the Free WordPress.com plan, the site can publish the podcast feed while the audio file is hosted elsewhere. The enclosure must remain publicly reachable over HTTPS; a file that requires a login, expires quickly or blocks automated requests will fail in podcast apps.
Premium and higher WordPress.com plans add WordPress.com audio hosting, listener statistics and an episode dashboard. The WordPress.com Support example for a Premium plan in 2026 lists 13 GB of audio storage. Treat that as the capacity of that plan example, not as a universal allowance for every region or future plan.
5. Publish the first episode
Create a new post and assign it to the podcast category. Add an episode title, a useful description and the audio with a Podcast Episode, Audio or Video block. Choose MP3 for the safest cross-platform result. Confirm that the post status is Published, not Draft, Scheduled or Private.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInclude episode-specific information in the description: the main question answered, guest name where relevant, links mentioned in the recording and a transcript or accessibility alternative when available. Keep the file name stable once the episode is public. Replacing the enclosure with a new URL can make apps treat it as a different download.
6. Find and test the feed
Open Jetpack → Podcast → Distribution and copy the RSS URL exactly. Open it in a browser to confirm that it is publicly accessible and contains the show title, artwork, the published episode and an audio enclosure. If the feed is empty, check the three conditions that most often cause it: the post is published, it has media and it is assigned to the selected podcast category.

Set up a self-hosted WordPress podcast
1. Install WordPress and secure the site
Use a host that can serve large files over HTTPS and has enough storage and bandwidth for your release schedule. Enable automatic WordPress, theme and plugin updates where appropriate, create administrator backups and use a separate editor account for day-to-day publishing. Test that your site remains reachable without a login before submitting the feed.
2. Install and configure a podcast plugin
Install a maintained WordPress podcast plugin, such as a Simple Podcasting-style plugin, from the WordPress admin area. The exact menu names differ, but the configuration normally asks for:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Show title, description, author and owner email.
- Artwork and an Apple category.
- Explicit-content status and copyright.
- A dedicated episode post type or category.
- Where audio files are stored and how their enclosure URLs are generated.
Read the plugin’s current documentation for its feed URL and migration procedure. Do not assume the normal WordPress blog feed is the podcast feed; submit the URL generated by the podcast settings.
3. Create one episode and validate its enclosure
Publish a test episode using an MP3. View the generated RSS XML and verify that the item contains an enclosure URL, a media type appropriate for MP3, a file length and a stable GUID. The enclosure URL must return the audio file itself rather than an HTML download page, redirect loop or access-denied response.
4. Decide whether to keep audio on the web host
Hosting audio on the same server is simple, but every download consumes storage and bandwidth. An external podcast host can separate media delivery and may provide download analytics, but it introduces another account, cost and migration dependency. If you move hosts, preserve the old enclosure URLs or implement reliable redirects and follow the host’s feed-migration instructions. Never silently change every episode’s GUID.
Build episode pages that help listeners
The RSS item gets an episode into apps; the WordPress page gives search visitors a richer experience. Use a consistent layout for every episode:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- A clear episode title that says what the listener will learn.
- The embedded player and a direct playback link.
- A concise summary followed by detailed show notes.
- Guest names, organizations and links mentioned in the recording.
- Chapters or timestamps when they materially improve navigation.
- A full transcript or an accessible text alternative.
- A visible subscribe or follow call to action that points to your directory listings.
Keep the episode URL permanent. If you change the site’s permalink structure, add redirects from old episode URLs and test links in the RSS feed. A directory can continue to show an old URL long after you change the WordPress settings.
Submit the RSS feed to Apple Podcasts
Requirements to check first
Apple’s published RSS requirements include a public RSS 2.0 feed, square artwork, at least one episode, unique enclosure URLs and a stable globally unique GUID for each episode. Apple Podcasts for Creators also states that you need an Apple Podcasts Connect account to submit a podcast.

- Open the feed outside your logged-in WordPress session.
- Confirm that the artwork is square, within the documented 1,400 × 1,400 to 3,000 × 3,000 pixel range, and RGB rather than CMYK.
- Play the enclosure URL in a private browser window.
- Check that every episode has a different GUID and that republishing an episode does not generate a new one.
- Make sure the explicit-content label and category match the actual show.
Submission steps
- Create or sign in to your Apple Podcasts Connect account.
- Choose the option to add a show and select the RSS-feed submission route.
- Paste the complete WordPress podcast RSS URL.
- Review the artwork, title, author, category, explicit setting and episode preview that Apple reads from the feed.
- Resolve any validation error in WordPress or the feed source, then submit the show for review.
Make corrections in WordPress and let Apple fetch the updated feed rather than creating a second listing. If you change the podcast category on WordPress.com, the feed URL changes and you must submit the new URL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Submit the RSS feed to Spotify and other directories
Spotify
Use Spotify for Creators’ submission flow and paste the same public RSS URL. Spotify does not accept M4A in this workflow, so use MP3 or another format explicitly accepted by the current Spotify documentation; do not use OGG or WAV for a feed intended for both Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Recommended Free Tools
Spotify listening is measured inside Spotify. Those plays do not appear in WordPress.com podcast statistics, so a difference between the two dashboards is expected rather than evidence that the feed is broken.
Other apps and directories
Most directories ask for the feed URL, then read the title, artwork, category and episode data from it. Keep one canonical feed and submit that same URL everywhere. Avoid creating separate feeds for individual apps unless you have a deliberate editorial reason and a migration plan.
After approval, publish a minor metadata change and check when each service reflects it. Directory updates are asynchronous and may take hours or days. Do not repeatedly resubmit the show because one app has not refreshed immediately.
Validate the feed before and after launch
A feed can be well-formed XML and still fail in an app. Use this practical checklist whenever you publish or migrate:
- Public access: the RSS URL and every enclosure load without authentication, expiring tokens or an IP restriction.
- Correct membership: the episode is published and belongs to the selected podcast category or plugin feed.
- Enclosure data: each item has one stable, unique audio URL and an accurate media type and file length.
- Identifiers: each episode has a globally unique, persistent GUID.
- Artwork: the show image is square, RGB and within the documented pixel range.
- Metadata: title, author, owner email, copyright, category and explicit status are present and consistent.
- Playback: the MP3 starts, seeks and completes in a private browser window and on a mobile connection.
- URLs: the episode page and enclosure use HTTPS and remain at the same addresses after publication.
Read the feed as a listener would, not only in the WordPress editor. A successful upload screen proves that WordPress stored a file; it does not prove that an automated directory can fetch it.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The feed has no episodes
Check that the post is published, includes an audio or podcast block, and is assigned to the exact category selected for the podcast. A draft, private post or post in a different category is excluded.
Best Value
The directory cannot read the feed
Open the RSS URL while logged out. Correct maintenance mode, password protection, firewall rules, invalid HTTPS certificates and redirect loops. On self-hosted WordPress, temporarily disable conflicting caching or security rules and retest the raw feed.
The episode appears but will not play
Inspect the enclosure URL, not just the episode page. It should return the MP3 with a valid response, not a login form, an HTML error page or a file that disappears after a short time. Re-export a corrupt file as MP3 and update the enclosure only before the episode has been widely distributed; after publication, preserve the original URL whenever possible.

Re-export a square JPG or PNG between 1,400 × 1,400 and 3,000 × 3,000 pixels in RGB color space. Convert CMYK artwork to RGB and remove unsupported animation or transparency if the directory’s validator flags it.
Changes are not visible in Apple Podcasts or Spotify
Wait for the directory’s next refresh; WordPress.com says this can take hours to days. Verify the feed itself first. If the feed is correct but the app is stale, do not alter the episode GUID or create a duplicate listing.
Moving from one audio host to another
Plan the move as a feed migration. Keep old enclosure URLs working or redirect them reliably, preserve GUIDs, update the feed source and test several existing episodes. A change that makes every episode look new can produce duplicate downloads and confusing catalog histories.
Operate the site after launch
Use a repeatable publishing checklist
- Export the final recording as a compatible MP3 and keep the lossless master separately.
- Write the title, summary, show notes, transcript and episode artwork or reuse the show artwork consistently.
- Upload or attach the audio through the podcast episode workflow.
- Assign the episode to the podcast category and verify the post is public.
- Check the episode page, enclosure URL and feed item in a logged-out browser.
- Publish, then confirm that the feed’s GUID and enclosure URL are the intended values.
- Share the permanent episode page; let directories discover the new item through the feed.
Protect identifiers and URLs
Do not edit a published episode in a way that creates a new GUID. Do not rename or delete the enclosure file without a redirect or a stable replacement at the same URL. Keep a private record of each episode’s publication date, page URL, enclosure URL and GUID so you can diagnose a migration or duplicate listing.

Measure the right things
WordPress page views describe visits to your site, not total podcast listening. WordPress.com plan statistics cover the services they measure, while Spotify reports listening that occurs inside Spotify. Compare like with like and label the source and date of every number in internal reports.
Decide which setup fits your show
- Choose managed WordPress.com if you want a guided category-and-feed workflow, minimal server maintenance and optional integrated audio hosting and statistics on eligible plans.
- Choose self-hosted WordPress if you need custom plugin behavior, full control of redirects and storage, or the ability to select a separate media host and analytics stack.
- Use external audio hosting with either approach when media storage, bandwidth, download reporting or a future migration is more important than keeping every asset on the WordPress server.
Whichever route you select, the dependable sequence is the same: configure the show identity, create one dedicated episode category, publish a real MP3 episode, verify the public RSS feed and submit that feed to each directory. Stable URLs and GUIDs then let the site grow without breaking subscribers.
