Ask your provider before installing anything; shared hosting does not imply root access or permission to run custom programs. If the host approves it, match the binary to the server’s operating system and CPU architecture, test it from an account-writable directory, then invoke it with an input URL or HTML file and an output image path.
What wkhtmltoimage does—and what shared hosting changes
wkhtmltoimage is an open-source command-line renderer that converts HTML pages into images using Qt WebKit. The upstream project describes it as headless, so it does not require a display or display service. That makes server-side use possible in principle, but does not guarantee it will work on a particular hosting account: the operating system, architecture, required libraries, permissions, and host policy all matter. The project overview describes the tool and its workflow.

There is no basis for assuming that a particular Indian shared-hosting provider or plan allows custom executables. Ask the host whether your account may run a binary from your home directory and whether rendering jobs are permitted. Root access is not a prerequisite if the host explicitly permits a compatible user-owned binary, but you generally cannot install system packages or write to protected system directories as an ordinary shared user.
Check hosting compatibility before installing
- Confirm account permissions. Ask whether SSH or another shell is available, whether user-owned executables may run, and whether process, memory, execution-time, or outbound-network limits apply. Also ask whether the provider will help diagnose missing shared libraries.
- Identify the server environment. Use provider-approved shell commands or ask support for the operating-system distribution and CPU architecture. Choose a release asset matching both. The official downloads page lists operating systems and architectures, but its package matrix is not a guarantee that a historical binary will work with a host’s current libraries.
- Use an account-writable location. If permitted, place or extract the executable in a directory in your account, such as a dedicated tools directory. Invoke it by its full path or add that directory to your shell’s
PATH. Do not try to work around host restrictions by changing protected system files. - Verify the build. Run the executable’s version and help options, then check that the expected options and output formats are supported by that actual build. The command-line interface is documented in the Debian wkhtmltoimage manual; available behavior can vary by build.
- Render a controlled test. Try a simple public URL or a small local HTML file. Confirm the process exits successfully and that the output exists, is non-empty, and opens as the expected image before integrating it into an application.
The cPanel guidance about root access concerns installing cPanel on a server; it does not establish what permissions a shared-hosting customer has. Ask your own provider rather than treating server-administrator requirements as a customer-account policy. cPanel’s installation guidance is relevant only to that distinction.

Run a basic conversion
The general syntax is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input> <output>. The input can be a URL or a local HTML file. These examples illustrate the documented command form; they are not evidence that a specific shared host has been tested.
Convert a URL to PNG
wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.png
Convert a local HTML file
wkhtmltoimage ./index.html page.png
For an executable installed outside PATH, substitute its full path, for example /home/ACCOUNT/tools/wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.png. Replace ACCOUNT with the account directory name provided by your host.

Adjust dimensions and rendering behavior
The Debian manual documents options such as --width, crop coordinates and dimensions, --zoom, --window-status, and controls for slow scripts. Consult the installed executable’s help output before relying on an option; do not assume every release asset supports identical switches.
- Viewport and crop: use width and crop options when the output should represent a particular viewport or region rather than the whole rendered page.
- Scale: use zoom when the rendered page needs a different scale, and check the resulting dimensions and legibility.
- Script timing: use the documented wait or slow-script controls only when the page needs time to finish rendering. Longer waits increase job duration and can run into host execution limits.
- Output format: choose a supported image extension and confirm that the installed build can produce it. The extension alone is not proof that a format is available.
For the full syntax and option descriptions, see the wkhtmltoimage(1) manual.
Use it safely from application code
When integrating the renderer, call a known executable path, handle non-zero exit status, and enforce a time limit appropriate to your host’s policy. Store output only in locations your application is allowed to write to, and validate that an output file was created before serving or processing it.
Do not pass arbitrary user-supplied HTML or JavaScript to the renderer without a strong security boundary. The project’s downloads page warns that untrusted HTML can lead to complete server takeover. Sanitization is not a substitute for isolation; do not treat it as a complete sandbox. The warning from the wkhtmltopdf project applies to this rendering context.

Release and maintenance considerations
The official downloads page identifies version 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. The upstream GitHub repository was archived by its owner on January 2, 2023. Those dates matter if you are choosing a renderer for a new or exposed service: assess whether an archived project and its older WebKit-based rendering stack meet your maintenance and security requirements. The release listing is historical guidance, not a current compatibility guarantee. See the downloads page and the upstream repository.

- “Permission denied” or the command will not execute: confirm the provider allows user binaries and that the file is executable. If permissions are correct but execution remains blocked, ask the host; a hosting policy cannot be fixed by installing as root when you do not have root access.
- “No such file or directory” despite the file being present: the executable may target a different operating system, architecture, or runtime environment. Recheck the matching release asset and ask support about compatibility.
- Missing shared library or loader errors: the build may depend on libraries unavailable to your account. Ask the provider whether they can supply or support the dependency; do not attempt privileged system changes on a shared server.
- Timeouts or terminated processes: the page may take too long to load or scripts may delay completion, or the host may enforce a short job limit. Check the provider’s limits, reduce unnecessary rendering work, and avoid increasing waits without confirming the allowed execution time.
- Blank, incomplete, or unexpected output: test a simple page to separate renderer problems from page-specific scripts or network access. Confirm the output format and options against the installed build, and check whether the source URL is reachable from the hosting account.
- It works over SSH but not through a website request: the web application may run under a different user, environment, or time limit than your shell. Use an approved full binary path, verify that the application user can execute it and write the destination, and consult the host about web-process restrictions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request captures a URL as WebP:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does wkhtmltoimage require a graphical display on the server?
No. The upstream project describes it as a headless tool that does not require a display or display service.

Can a shared-hosting customer install it without root access?
Possibly, if the provider allows a compatible user-owned executable and the server has its required libraries. Confirm both with the host; there is no universal shared-hosting policy.
