First check whether the app has a macOS version or works in a browser. If not, the right Windows option depends on your Mac: Boot Camp is for supported Intel models, Apple silicon Macs can use a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine with a supported configuration, and Windows 365 can stream a remote Cloud PC. These routes differ in compatibility, setup, and whether you need an internet connection.
Choose the right route for your Mac
- Check for a Mac app or web version. This is usually the simplest way to use the service. Confirm that the Mac or browser version includes the features your workflow needs.
- Identify your Mac’s processor. Boot Camp applies to supported Intel Macs. Apple silicon Macs use a different local option: a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine.
- Decide between local Windows and a remote desktop. A local installation or virtual machine can run alongside—or, for Boot Camp, instead of—macOS. A Cloud PC runs elsewhere and streams its desktop to your Mac.
- Verify the exact app before relying on any route. Check the app developer’s compatibility guidance, particularly for required drivers, peripherals, graphics features, and enterprise security software.
| Option | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mac app or browser service | The developer offers a macOS or web version | Some Windows-only features or workflows may be missing. |
| Boot Camp | A supported Intel Mac | Windows and macOS require a restart to switch between them; Apple’s current guidance covers Windows 10. |
| Windows 11 ARM virtual machine | A supported Apple silicon Mac and virtualization configuration | App, driver, and device compatibility must be checked; support depends on the exact Mac and software versions. |
| Windows 365 Cloud PC | A user with access to a Cloud PC who wants Windows remotely | Requires network access and an eligible or administrator-assigned account. |
Can you use a Mac or browser version instead?
Check the app publisher’s site before installing Windows. A native Mac app avoids Windows setup, and a browser service may cover the same task without installing anything. Compare features, file handling, and any required integrations rather than assuming the Mac version is identical to the Windows one.

Microsoft lists native ARM64 Windows versions of Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote. As Microsoft puts it in its Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ, “We now offer more native Arm64 versions of apps than ever before, including our fastest implementation of Microsoft 365 apps, like Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote.” That is a list of Windows ARM apps, not a guarantee that every Windows application has a Mac version.

Boot Camp installs Windows on supported Intel-based Macs. To move between Windows and macOS, restart the computer and select the operating system to start. It is not the route for Apple silicon Macs.

Apple’s current installation instructions cover Windows 10 and set requirements for supported Mac models, available storage, and setup. Check Apple’s Boot Camp requirements for Windows 10 and Boot Camp Assistant User Guide for your model and the current procedure before changing partitions or installing Windows. Do not assume those instructions establish support for a newer Windows release.
How to run a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine on Apple silicon
On Apple silicon, the local Windows route described by Microsoft is a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine. Microsoft’s options for using Windows 11 with Mac computers identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized for Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise ARM virtual machines on Apple M1, M2, and M3 Macs. These are specific version and chip details, not blanket approval of every virtualization product or later release. Confirm Microsoft’s current guidance and the exact Mac and Parallels version you plan to use.

Windows ARM can run some apps designed for other Windows processor architectures through emulation, but this does not establish that a particular app will work. Before depending on a VM, check the software publisher’s support statement and confirm that needed drivers and peripherals are compatible. This matters especially for apps that rely on kernel-level drivers, specialized hardware, graphics acceleration, or enterprise security controls.
Do not confuse this with Rosetta. Apple describes Rosetta as a way to translate Intel Mac apps for Apple silicon Macs; it is not a method for running Windows software.

How to use a Windows 365 Cloud PC from a Mac
Windows 365 runs Windows in Microsoft’s cloud and streams the desktop to your Mac. Microsoft describes it as streaming “your Windows desktop, apps, settings, and content from the Microsoft Cloud to a Windows 365 Cloud PC” in its Windows 365 FAQs. You can connect through Windows App for macOS or a browser, depending on the service and setup. Microsoft’s Windows App overview describes its supported remote environments.
You need access to a Cloud PC; an organization may assign one, and eligibility depends on the account and service terms. Because the desktop runs remotely, usable performance depends on network access and connection quality. This option does not mean every Mac owner can create or access a Cloud PC automatically.

What to check before choosing
- Mac processor: Determine whether your Mac is Intel or Apple silicon; that decides whether Boot Camp is relevant.
- App and device support: Verify the exact app, installer, drivers, peripherals, and required graphics or security features with the vendor.
- How you switch: Boot Camp requires a restart to change operating systems; a virtual machine lets you use Windows and macOS in a local VM setup; a Cloud PC is remote.
- Network needs: Local Windows options are not the same as a streamed desktop. Windows 365 depends on network access.
- Access and licensing: Check Windows edition and licensing requirements, virtualization software requirements, and whether your organization provides a Cloud PC.
- Workload demands: If the task depends on specialized hardware, demanding graphics, or tightly controlled security software, get confirmation from the app vendor or administrator before committing.
