To watch a video in a WhatsApp chat, open the chat and tap Play on the video. WhatsApp says video messages open playing on mute; tap the video to turn on sound. Other controls depend on what appears in your installed app, so use the on-screen player rather than assuming a particular gesture or menu is available on every iPhone and Android device.

If it is a video message and it starts without sound, tap the video to start the sound. WhatsApp described this behavior in its video-message announcement.

What to know about iPhone and Android controls
The official WhatsApp information available for this guide confirms how to start a chat video and how sound works for video messages, but it does not establish a complete, current control-by-control inventory for iPhone and Android. In particular, it does not confirm that a specific seek gesture, skip interval, or playback-speed menu is available across both platforms. If you need to move through a video or change its playback, check the controls actually shown in your player.
Do not confuse video controls with other WhatsApp features
Video messages and other chat videos
The mute-then-tap-for-sound behavior is stated specifically for video messages opened in a chat. WhatsApp’s instructions say to select Play to open a video in a chat; they do not establish that every type of video uses identical controls.

Voice messages
WhatsApp documents 1.5× and 2× playback speeds for voice messages. Those instructions apply to audio messages and do not confirm that video playback has the same speed options.

Options such as switching cameras or using Picture-in-Picture are covered as video-call features. They are not instructions for controlling a received video in a chat.

WhatsApp’s media-editing instructions cover preparing and sending media, including quality choices. Sending-quality settings are distinct from controls for watching a received video.

Check that you are watching a chat video rather than viewing a voice message or participating in a video call; their controls serve different purposes.

Do not assume a control is missing because it has a different gesture or location than on another device. The available official guidance does not establish a universal layout for every app version.
