To keep a WhatsApp video, download or save it using the control for your device. To send a video in a chat as clearly as WhatsApp allows, choose HD quality in the media composer. HD can look clearer than Standard, but it does not preserve original quality in every case: WhatsApp says connection conditions affect media quality and shared media may be compressed.
Save a video you received
Where the video goes depends on your device and WhatsApp settings. Download it from the chat first, then check your gallery or the computer’s configured save location.

On iPhone
Tap and hold the video, then tap Save. If the video has not downloaded, tapping its play button starts playback and continues the download in the background. WhatsApp’s auto-download controls are under Settings or your profile picture > Storage and data. Choose whether each media type downloads on Never, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi and cellular. On Android
WhatsApp says downloaded media is saved to the phone gallery by default. To change whether media from a particular chat appears there, open the chat, tap the contact or group name to view its information, and adjust Media visibility. WhatsApp also points to general Chats settings for media visibility controls. The exact location of a file can vary with device and app settings. See WhatsApp’s media help page.

On desktop
WhatsApp documents auto-download controls, but the computer’s settings determine where downloaded files are saved. Check the configured save location if you cannot find the video. WhatsApp’s desktop media instructions also explain selecting an existing video from your computer when sending it.
Send a video in HD in a chat
- Open the WhatsApp chat and attach or select the video.
- In the media composer, choose HD quality instead of Standard quality, if the option is available.
- Send the video. If you send HD often, set it as the default at Settings > Storage and data > Media upload quality. You can still choose Standard for an individual send.
WhatsApp says HD media is clearer than Standard, but it uses more data and takes longer to send. A Wi-Fi connection may send HD media faster than cellular. WhatsApp also warns: “The internet connection will impact the quality of media being sent and received, even if the media is sent in HD quality.” See About HD photos and videos.

Choose between Standard and HD

These are relative differences described by WhatsApp; its help page does not give a guaranteed file size or time for each setting. The HD option is for chat media, not status updates or profile pictures.
Why HD may still look less clear than the original
HD is a sending option, not a promise that the recipient will receive a bit-for-bit copy of the original. WhatsApp says connection conditions affect quality even when HD is selected, and that shared media may be lower quality than the original because media files are usually compressed. Its help page lists default video limits that vary with connection speed: 100 MB and 720p for users with a faster connection, and 64 MB and 480p for users with a slower connection. These are WhatsApp help-page defaults, not universal guarantees for every send.

If you need to resend a video, select HD before sending when the option is available. Do not assume an already-sent video can be upgraded in place: WhatsApp’s help material specifically discusses resending an existing photo in HD, not upgrading a video already sent.

On the documented iPhone flow, the choices are Never, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi and cellular. Never gives you manual control over downloads; Wi-Fi avoids using cellular data for automatic downloads; Wi-Fi and cellular is more convenient but can use mobile data. The precise menus and options may differ by platform.
