Build a tracking workflow around a question
Start with what you need to learn, not with a long list of URLs. Useful questions include whether a competitor changed its pricing, introduced a feature, shifted its landing-page message, or announced a launch. Each monitored page should help answer one of those questions.

- Choose the pages. Start with relevant pricing, product, feature, landing, blog, or launch pages. Keep a record of each URL and the question it is meant to answer.
- Set the capture conditions. Choose a viewport and decide whether you need the first screen or a full-page capture. The first screen emphasizes the hero and value proposition; a full-page capture can include pricing tables, FAQs, and footers. Record the viewport and scope so later comparisons are meaningful.
- Save a baseline. Keep the first capture as the reference point. Include the date in the filename or record it alongside the image.
- Repeat at a practical interval. Capture again on a steady schedule that fits the likely pace of change and your team’s ability to review results. There is no universally ideal cadence.
- Compare and investigate. Review the before-and-after images. If wording or underlying page content matters, inspect a text or HTML difference as well.
- Reduce noise and retain context. Keep dated captures and record the URL, capture time, viewport, and comparison pair. Where your tool supports it, adjust thresholds, monitor selected regions, or hide recurring elements that create irrelevant diffs.
Manual tracking or automated monitoring?
Manual captures
A small team can maintain a URL list, take recurring screenshots, save them with dates, and compare pairs in an image viewer or diff tool. This is straightforward when the number of pages is manageable and someone can review them regularly. Webshot also documents combining API capture with scheduled jobs.

Automated services
Automated services may schedule captures, keep visual history, compare images, and send alerts. The capabilities vary: Allscreenshots documents hourly, daily, weekly, or custom recurring captures; ChangeTower describes storing a screenshot with HTML and capture time while detecting changes at the content level; Snapshot Archive and ScreenshotInk describe rendered visual comparison. These are vendors’ descriptions of their own products, not independent test results.

Confirm retention and service limits directly with the provider; they affect whether the archive will serve your needs.
What a screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot records a page’s rendered visual state at capture time. Comparing images can reveal visible changes such as a different image, color, layout, or price rendered by JavaScript. A screenshot alone may not reveal changes that are not visible, such as metadata. Text or HTML comparison can surface other kinds of change, but it does not replace checking the rendered page.

A visual diff is a review aid, not an explanation. A changed region could reflect a meaningful headline or price update, or routine dynamic content. Open the page and examine its context before interpreting an alert as a competitor move. If recurring page elements make comparisons noisy, use available threshold, region-selection, or hide-element controls.
Capture pages yourself with a screenshot API
For a DIY workflow, pair a screenshot API with a scheduler and a separate image-comparison utility. The scheduler can run captures at your chosen interval; save the returned files with dates and the monitored URL, then compare them and review any relevant differences. Webshot documents this API-and-scheduled-job approach. The monitoring workflow depends on your chosen scheduler and comparison tool, so verify their setup and retention separately.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a dated monitoring workflow, call it from your own scheduler and retain the results alongside the URL and capture conditions. This capture call uses the supplied endpoint and saves the response as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor would and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Keep the evidence useful
- Use a stable viewport and capture scope for each comparison pair; otherwise, layout differences may come from changed capture conditions rather than the page.
- Label captures with dates and retain enough context to identify the URL, time, viewport, and prior capture.
- Use visual comparison for rendered changes and add text or HTML checks when nonvisual content is part of the question.
- Review alerts against the live page and its context before drawing conclusions about competitor intent.
- Choose a cadence and archive duration your team can actually review and maintain.
Frequently asked questions
How do you monitor a competitor’s pricing page?
Record the pricing-page URL, capture it under consistent conditions on a repeat schedule, and compare each dated capture with the previous one. Inspect the page when a visual or content change appears so you can distinguish a real pricing update from a display or dynamic-content change.

Can I see what a page looked like before?
Yes, if you kept a dated screenshot or use a service that retains a visual history. Retention periods and export options differ by service, so check those terms before relying on an archive.
Can I diff screenshots to see what changed?
Yes. A visual comparison can highlight changed areas, but it cannot explain their significance. Review the page and its context, and use text or HTML comparison when the change may not be visible in an image.
