The important difference is platform support: ChatGPT documents voice on mobile and the web, Claude documents it on mobile, desktop, and the web, while Gemini Live currently requires an Android phone or tablet and is not available in the Gemini web app.
Voice is an interface, not an accuracy guarantee. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can misunderstand speech or produce incorrect answers, so verify important dates, times, locations, medical guidance, financial information, and other consequential details.

At a glance: where each voice mode works
| Service | Supported platforms in the current documentation | How you start | Notable controls | Availability caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Voice | iOS, Android, and the web | Voice icon in the message bar or prompt window | Live, Advanced, or Standard voice choices; interruption and text continuity depend on the selected mode | Options can vary by account; some video and screen features are limited to supported mobile Advanced sessions |
| Claude voice mode | Claude Mobile (iOS and Android), Claude Desktop, and the web | Sound-wave symbol in a new chat; on mobile it is beside the microphone | Hands-free or push-to-talk; interrupt by speaking; switch between text and voice in one conversation | Beta feature on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans; built to work best from a phone |
| Gemini Live | Android phones and tablets through the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as mobile assistant | Tap Live or swipe left in the app | Interrupt, hold, mute, captions, camera, screen sharing, and Connected Apps where enabled | Unavailable in the Gemini web app and Gemini in Google Messages; Google releases updates gradually |
Google also documents an optional way to start Gemini Live on compatible Pixel Buds by saying “Hey Google, let’s talk Live.” Earbuds are not required for the app-based setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before you turn on voice mode
Check the device and account
- Install the current mobile app when a service requires one and sign in to an account that is eligible for the feature.
- Use a working microphone. A phone’s built-in microphone is sufficient; a headset can reduce feedback but is optional.
- Keep the app or browser in the foreground during first-time setup so permission prompts are visible.
- Use a quiet environment for continuous listening. Push-to-talk is safer when other people are speaking nearby.
Understand permissions
Your operating system or browser may ask for microphone permission the first time. Choose the allow option if you want a spoken session. If you previously denied access, open the device’s app permissions or the browser’s site permissions, enable the microphone, then restart the voice session.

How to use ChatGPT Voice
Start on iPhone or Android
- Open the ChatGPT app and enter an existing chat or create a new one.
- Select the Voice icon in the message bar.
- Grant microphone access if the app asks for it.
- Choose a voice if this is your first session, then speak normally.
Voice runs within the conversation, so the resulting exchange remains associated with that chat. You can return to text in the same conversation instead of starting over.
Start on the web
- Open ChatGPT.com in a supported browser and open a chat.
- Select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- Allow the browser to use your microphone when prompted.
- Begin speaking and wait for the response.
Choose among Live, Advanced, and Standard
OpenAI’s current help documentation lists Live, Advanced, and Standard under Settings → Voice, although the choices shown can depend on account availability. Live is the natural back-and-forth option: it can listen and speak at the same time, and it can work with text and images in the same chat. The help page currently says Live does not support video or screen sharing. Advanced can provide supported mobile video or screen-sharing capabilities when that option is available to your account.
Do not assume that seeing a Voice button means every mode or media feature is enabled. If an option is missing, update the app, confirm that you are signed in to the intended account, and check the Voice settings again.
How to use Claude voice mode
Start on the web or desktop app
- Open Claude and start a chat.
- Select the sound-wave symbol at the lower right of the conversation.
- Allow microphone access if your browser or operating system requests it.
- Choose a voice when prompted and begin talking.
Start on iOS or Android
- Open the Claude mobile app.
- Tap the sound-wave icon beside the microphone in the input area.
- Select a voice and speak after the session opens.
Anthropic describes voice mode as a beta feature for Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans across Claude Mobile, Claude Desktop, and the web. It says the experience is built to work best from a phone, even though desktop and browser access are documented.
Pick hands-free or push-to-talk
Hands-free listens continuously and responds when it detects a natural pause. It suits a quiet room and a conversation in which you want to keep your hands away from the device. Push-to-talk is the safer choice when there is background noise or another person nearby because you control when audio is sent. You can interrupt Claude by speaking again rather than waiting for the full response.

- Go live with Gemini, your Google AI assistant; brainstorm ideas, make grocery lists, and schedule events, just by using your voice – with advanced audio processing, you can have clear conversations, even in noisy environments[2,11]
Continue with text and connected tools
Claude retains context when you switch between voice and typing in the same conversation. Voice uses the same Claude models available to you in text chat and counts toward your regular usage limits. Depending on your plan and permissions, connected tools such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack can also be used during a voice conversation. Tool access does not remove the need to review what Claude is about to do or has done.
How to use Gemini Live
Confirm the Android requirements
Google’s current instructions require an Android phone or tablet, the Gemini mobile app or Gemini used as the mobile assistant, a signed-in eligible account, and the latest Google app. Gemini Live is currently unavailable in the Gemini web app and in Gemini in Google Messages. Google says availability changes roll out gradually, so two eligible accounts may not show exactly the same controls at the same time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart from the Gemini app
- Open the Gemini app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Live, or swipe left to reach Live.
- Complete any first-use instructions shown on screen.
- Speak after the Live session begins.
Google also documents the voice prompt “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk.” On supported Pixel Buds, the same phrase can start a Live chat without opening the phone first. This is an optional accessory path, not a requirement.
Control a running Live session
Gemini Live is designed for interruptions, so you can begin speaking while Gemini is answering. You can put the session on hold, mute the microphone, and end the session. Ending it lets you review the transcript and move between Live and a normal text chat. Captions can be enabled where the control is available.
Use camera and screen sharing carefully
Android instructions also describe camera or video streaming, screen sharing, captions, and Connected Apps. These controls depend on permissions, account type, settings, and Google’s staged rollout. When screen sharing is enabled, the full screen is shared rather than a single window. Close private apps, hide notifications, and inspect the entire display before turning it on.

How do I change the voice language?
ChatGPT
Open Settings → Voice and select a preferred speech language. OpenAI says this can improve recognition. During a voice conversation, you can also ask ChatGPT to speak another language. The generated transcript may not exactly match what was said, particularly with overlapping speakers, background noise, or very fast speech.
Recommended Free Tools
Claude
Claude’s voice language setting is separate from the app’s display-language setting. Change the voice language in the voice controls rather than assuming that changing the interface language will change speech. Anthropic identifies non-English voice support as beta, so pronunciation, recognition, and availability can vary by language.
Gemini
Gemini’s available voices vary by language. If a particular voice does not appear, check the language selected for Gemini and whether the feature has reached your account; Google’s gradual rollout means the menu can differ between users.
Can I use voice mode on desktop?
Yes for ChatGPT and Claude, with different documented paths. ChatGPT Voice starts from the Voice icon in a ChatGPT.com prompt window, subject to browser microphone permission and account availability. Claude voice mode starts from the sound-wave symbol in a web or desktop chat. Gemini Live is the exception in the current documentation: it requires Android mobile and is not available in the Gemini web app. A desktop browser cannot substitute for the Gemini Android app for Live.
How turn-taking changes the experience
| Need | Most relevant control | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Natural interruption | ChatGPT Live, Claude interruption, or Gemini Live | You can speak while the assistant is responding, although recognition still depends on noise and timing. |
| Quiet, hands-free conversation | Claude hands-free | Claude listens for natural pauses and responds without a button press. |
| Noisy room or nearby speakers | Claude push-to-talk | Audio is sent when you deliberately activate the control, reducing accidental pickup. |
| Pause without ending | Gemini Live hold | The session remains available while listening is temporarily suspended. |
| Prevent any audio from being sent | Gemini Live mute or an operating-system microphone block | The assistant cannot hear new speech until you unmute or restore permission. |
On any platform, pause briefly between thoughts when recognition is struggling. Speak closer to the microphone, reduce competing audio, and avoid having several people talk over one another.

Are voice chats saved?
ChatGPT retention
OpenAI distinguishes among audio types. Live and Advanced audio clips are stored with the chat transcript for 30 days. If you delete the chat, associated clips are deleted within 30 days, subject to stated safety, legal, or training exceptions. Standard audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it. OpenAI also distinguishes sharing audio or video clips from the use of transcripts and other files through account settings, so review those controls rather than treating every voice session identically.
Claude retention
Anthropic says textual transcripts from voice mode are saved in chat history like text conversations. Its reviewed voice help material does not specify an audio-recording retention period. That means you should not infer a particular duration for raw audio from the fact that a text transcript remains in the conversation.
Gemini retention and activity controls
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated September 24, 2026, says Gemini Live transcripts and recordings can be collected, including audio and any shared video or screen content. With Keep Activity turned off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train AI models unless you send feedback; Google still says chats are saved for 72 hours to respond and protect users. Google separately states that human-reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years and that audio plus Gemini Live video or screen shares are not used to improve Google services by default. These are setting-dependent policies, not a blanket promise that no information is retained.
Practical privacy checks
- Do not speak passwords, one-time codes, payment-card numbers, or confidential client information into an open microphone.
- Before screen sharing, close unrelated tabs and apps and disable sensitive notifications.
- Review each service’s activity, history, data-sharing, and feedback controls after an update, because menus and policies can change.
- Delete a conversation when you no longer need it, while remembering that deletion timelines can include documented safety or legal exceptions.
Voice transcripts are not perfect records
Speech recognition can lose words when people interrupt one another, a room is noisy, an accent is unfamiliar to the selected language model, or the speaker talks quickly. ChatGPT explicitly warns that its transcript can differ from the spoken exchange. Treat every transcript as an aid for finding the conversation, not as a verbatim legal or meeting record, unless you independently check it.

The voice button is missing
- Confirm that you are in the official app or a supported browser and are signed in.
- Update the app or Google app where applicable.
- Check whether your account, plan, or regional rollout includes the feature. Claude identifies voice as beta, and Google says Gemini updates arrive gradually.
- For Gemini, verify that you are using Android; the web app and Google Messages do not provide Gemini Live in the current instructions.
The assistant cannot hear you
- Check the microphone mute control inside the voice session.
- Open operating-system privacy settings and confirm microphone access for the app.
- In a browser, select the lock or site-controls icon and allow microphone access for the service’s page.
- Disconnect a Bluetooth headset temporarily to test the phone or computer microphone.
- End and restart the session after changing permission settings.
The assistant responds too early or talks over you
Move to a quieter room and leave a short pause at the end of each thought. In Claude, switch from hands-free to push-to-talk. In Gemini, use its interruption and mute controls deliberately. ChatGPT Live is designed for simultaneous listening and speaking, so a brief pause or a clear request such as “wait until I finish” can help, but it cannot guarantee perfect turn-taking.

Language recognition is wrong
Set the dedicated voice language where the service provides one rather than changing only the app display language. ChatGPT’s language choice is under Settings → Voice; Claude’s voice language is separate from its interface language; Gemini’s voice list depends on the selected language and rollout. If recognition remains poor, use shorter phrases and check the transcript before acting on it.
Camera or screen sharing will not start
Check camera, screen-capture, and microphone permissions, then confirm that the feature is supported in the selected mode. ChatGPT’s current help material separates Live from Advanced mobile video or screen capabilities. Gemini’s camera and screen controls depend on Android permissions, account settings, and gradual availability. Remember that Gemini screen sharing exposes the entire display.
Which service fits a particular use case?
Choose ChatGPT when you already work in its chats
ChatGPT is the straightforward choice if you want voice on both a phone and a browser, or if you want to keep text and images in the same conversation. Select the mode your account exposes: Live is the simultaneous, natural option; Advanced may add supported mobile video or screen sharing. Check the Voice settings before assuming that every account has the same choices.
Choose Claude when desktop voice and deliberate turn-taking matter
Claude is the only one of these three with documentation covering mobile, desktop, and web while also offering an explicit hands-free versus push-to-talk choice. Its beta status, regular usage limits, and separate voice-language setting are important trade-offs. The ability to use eligible connected tools in the same conversation can matter more than a purely conversational feature list.
Choose Gemini Live when Android assistance and visual context matter
Gemini Live is designed around Android and can combine spoken conversation with supported camera, full-screen sharing, captions, and Connected Apps. It is the least suitable option if you need a desktop browser, iPhone, or a consistently identical feature set across accounts. Verify that the controls have reached your account before planning a workflow around them.
Use voice as an interface, not as a fact checker
All three assistants can misunderstand what you said and can generate confident but false information. Ask for a concise answer first, then request sources or a written checklist when a decision matters. Read the resulting text, transcript, or action confirmation before sending a message, changing a setting, making a purchase, or relying on a date or location.
OpenAI says more than 150 million people each week talk to ChatGPT using features such as Voice and Dictation. That figure is not a Voice-only usage count, and it says nothing about accuracy or suitability for a particular task.
A quick setup checklist
- Install or open the correct app and sign in.
- Start with the platform-specific control: ChatGPT Voice, Claude’s sound-wave icon, or Gemini Live on Android.
- Allow microphone access only after checking that you are in the intended app or browser tab.
- Select a voice and dedicated speech language where available.
- Choose hands-free, interruption, push-to-talk, hold, or mute controls to match your surroundings.
- Inspect permissions and the whole screen before enabling camera or screen sharing.
- Review the transcript and verify important answers.
- Check history and activity controls if the conversation contains sensitive information.
The Bottom Line
ChatGPT offers the broadest documented device reach, Claude provides the clearest desktop and turn-taking controls, and Gemini Live is the Android-focused option with the most explicit camera and screen-sharing workflow. Start with the matching icon, verify permissions and account availability, and treat every spoken answer and transcript as something to check.
