You can reduce or opt out of model-training use of voice conversations, but the right control depends on the service. Before speaking, check its training setting—and treat audio retention, transcript use, human review, feedback, and cloud processing as separate questions. Turning off training does not necessarily stop a service from processing a request or retaining data for safety, legal, or other stated reasons.
What to check before using voice AI
Look for the service’s model-improvement or training control before starting a conversation. Then check the separate disclosures for recordings and transcripts. A service may need to process speech to answer you even if it does not use that data to train models.

- Training: Can voice conversations, transcripts, or uploaded files be used to improve or train models?
- Audio retention: Is raw audio saved, and what happens when you delete a conversation?
- Review and exceptions: Does the provider describe human review, safety or abuse handling, legal retention, or a feedback exception?
- Processing location: Is speech handled on your device, or sent to the provider’s servers?
Settings and labels can vary by device, account, plan, region, and software rollout. Confirm the current control in your own account and read the linked provider notice before relying on it.
ChatGPT Voice: turn off the main training control
- Open Settings → Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- If you use a personal Free, Plus, or Pro workspace, review the separate choice about sharing audio or video clips from voice conversations.
These controls cover different data. OpenAI says that when the main improvement setting is on, transcripts and other files from voice conversations may be used to train models, depending on plan and settings. Turning off audio-clip sharing alone therefore does not exclude transcripts from training. See OpenAI’s voice conversation guidance.

OpenAI also says that submitting feedback may make the entire conversation associated with that feedback available for training, even if you have opted out. Deleting a chat deletes associated voice audio or video clips within 30 days, subject to security, safety, legal, or prior-disassociation exceptions; opting out should not be treated as immediate deletion of data already retained. Gemini: distinguish recordings from other activity
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub distinguishes audio recordings from other Gemini Apps information, such as prompts, uploaded content, transcripts, feedback, and information from connected apps. Google says Gemini audio recordings are not used to train its AI models except to address abuse or harm. That statement does not mean every transcript or interaction is excluded from service improvement or generative-AI training.

Google says Assistant audio recordings are not saved on its servers by default. The separate Include voice and audio activity control affects whether they are saved. Google also describes using data to develop and improve its products and machine-learning technologies, so the recording-storage setting should not be read as a blanket exclusion from all improvement uses. Review your account’s controls and Google’s Safety Centre privacy guidance.

Apple Siri and Dictation: check whether the request stays on-device
Apple’s device settings indicate whether a particular Siri or Dictation request is processed on-device or sends what you say to Apple. Apple documents on-device Dictation as fully offline; that does not establish that every Siri or Dictation feature works locally. Check the setting for the specific feature you plan to use.
To avoid opting in to sharing interaction data for improvement, keep Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence off—or Improve Siri & Dictation on devices that use that label. Apple identifies Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements as the relevant settings area. Its current notice says that opting in may allow audio, transcripts, responses, and related request data to be used to develop or improve services and foundation models. Alexa: manage improvement use and recordings separately
- In the Alexa app, open More → Alexa Privacy → Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Review the setting for using voice recordings to improve services and develop features.
- Open Review Alexa History to review and delete recordings, including recordings associated with false wakes.
Amazon says a wake-word activation streams a recording to the cloud and describes human review of a very small sample as part of supervised learning. Deleting history is not the same as disabling all improvement use; check both controls. See Amazon’s Alexa privacy FAQ.
What an opt-out does—and does not—mean
A training opt-out is a limit on a particular use of data, not a promise that a voice assistant will never hear, process, store, or review anything. Depending on the service and feature, speech may still be sent to a server to answer a request; recordings or transcripts may be handled under separate controls or exceptions. If local processing is important, verify that the specific feature supports it rather than assuming the whole assistant does.

No comparable percentage showing how many voice conversations are used for model training is established by the cited provider pages. Treat a precise cross-service rate as unverified unless a provider publishes one with a clear scope and methodology.
