Choose SSD capacity based on what you expect to keep installed and stored at the same time—not just what fits on day one. Count your operating system and apps, the games or active work projects you want close at hand, and your locally stored files. Then leave room for updates, caches, temporary files, and growth. Cloud storage, removable drives, and the option to upgrade can change how much space you need on the main drive.
Start with what must stay on the drive
Make a list of the things you expect to use without moving or deleting files: the operating system, applications, games, active projects, and personal files. Add their published storage requirements where available. Your installed total is only a starting point: updates, caches, temporary files, and new content also need room.

There is no official capacity tier that suits every gaming, work, and everyday-use buyer. The practical target depends on how many large games you keep installed, whether your work involves local photo or video projects, how much content is synced to the cloud, and whether the device can be upgraded.
What different workloads mean for capacity
Everyday browsing, school, and office work
For browsing, schoolwork, and office applications, the deciding factor is often not the documents themselves but whether you also keep a large photo or video library, games, or other bulky files locally. Check the requirements for the programs you plan to install. Microsoft likewise advises checking program requirements and notes that cloud storage for non-game content can reduce the amount needed on the device.

Gaming
For gaming, total the install requirements of the games you want available at once, rather than planning around one title or an assumed average. PlayStation lists 190GB of SSD space for the PC version of God of War Ragnarök. That is an example of one large game, not a typical game-size estimate. Allow additional space for updates and captures if you keep them on the same drive.
Microsoft also notes that game files consume storage. If you are willing to uninstall and reinstall games, or move them to other storage, your main drive does not need to hold your entire library at once.

Creative work and video editing
Separate the space for an application from the space for the media it works on. Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements, updated September 16, 2026, specify 8GB of available disk space plus additional installation space. Adobe also calls for a “Fast internal SSD for app installation and cache” and an “Additional high-speed drive for media.” The 8GB figure is for application installation space; it is not a capacity recommendation for an editing workstation.
Recommended Free Tools
The footage, proxies, cache, and projects you retain determine how much media space you need. Adobe distinguishes minimum HD specifications from recommended specifications for HD, 4K, or higher workflows, but does not set one universal media-drive capacity. Ordinary documents and active creative projects therefore call for different storage plans.

Capacity figures: useful context, not universal recommendations
These official figures illustrate requirements for specific software or hardware. They do not establish how large a drive every user should buy.
| Figure | What it applies to | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 64GB or greater available disk space | Microsoft’s current Windows 11 minimum system requirement, accessed in 2026. Microsoft says storage needs may increase over time for updates and features. | It is not a recommendation to buy a 64GB drive for normal use. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements |
| 190GB SSD space | The PC version of God of War Ragnarök, according to PlayStation’s current listing, accessed in 2026. | It is one game-specific example, not an average for modern games. PlayStation’s PC requirements listing |
| 8GB available disk space plus additional installation space | Adobe Premiere version 26.x application installation requirements; the page was updated September 16, 2026. | It does not include a universal allowance for media, projects, or cache. Adobe Premiere technical requirements |
Use cloud, external, or upgradeable storage strategically
Cloud storage
Files kept in cloud storage rather than downloaded locally can reduce the capacity required on the main drive. Microsoft specifically notes this option for non-game content in its storage buying guidance. Consider which files must be available offline before relying on this approach.

External storage
An external USB SSD can suit backups or media libraries, but platform rules determine what can run from it. On PS5, compatible PS4 games can be played from USB extended storage; PS5 games stored there must be transferred back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. See PlayStation’s USB extended-storage guidance and PS5 storage management instructions.
Internal expansion
Internal expansion can keep supported content ready to use, but a drive’s label alone does not establish compatibility. For PS5 M.2 expansion, PlayStation specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe interface, a capacity range of 250GB to 8TB, approved dimensions, heat-dissipation requirements, and a recommended sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. These are PS5-specific specifications, not general SSD requirements. Check the current PS5 M.2 installation instructions and M.2 SSD requirements for your console before buying; details can vary with support-page revisions, region, or system updates.

A practical buying decision
- List the workload. Include the operating system and apps, games you want installed together, active creative projects, and personal files stored locally.
- Check published requirements. Use the software and game requirements for the specific products you use; do not treat a single example as representative of every title or application.
- Add working room. Leave space beyond the initial installed total for updates, caches, temporary files, captures, and expected growth.
- Decide what can live elsewhere. Account for cloud files, external storage, and whether you are comfortable moving or reinstalling games and projects.
- Confirm upgrade options. If the drive is replaceable or the device supports expansion, verify the exact interface, capacity limits, physical fit, speed, and cooling requirements in the device maker’s current guidance.
If you are considering a 512GB drive for everyday use, ask whether it must also hold several large games, a local photo or video library, or active creative projects. If you are considering a 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD, treat that as a capacity choice—not a guarantee of compatibility. The right amount is the space your simultaneous workload needs, with enough headroom to avoid constantly moving files.
