There is no universally best model or guaranteed growth tactic: test subscription, advertising-supported, transactional, and hybrid approaches against your own costs and audience behavior.
Choose a revenue model that matches your audience and rights
VOD businesses commonly use subscription video on demand (SVOD), advertising-supported video on demand (AVOD), free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST), and transactional video on demand (TVOD). A hybrid combines more than one approach. Amazon Prime Video’s reporting taxonomy includes TVOD, subscription products, and AVOD, while industry coverage also describes hybrid models. These categories describe available approaches, not guaranteed economics.

| Model | How it earns revenue | Questions to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| SVOD | Recurring subscription payments. | Can the audience support a recurring fee? Measure conversion, cancellations, retention, and the cost of serving subscribers. |
| AVOD | Advertising sold against viewing. | Can you sell and measure ad inventory, and will the audience accept ads in exchange for access? |
| FAST | Free, ad-supported access organized around streaming channels. | Can you support the channel experience and ad operations, and do distribution terms make sense? |
| TVOD | Individual title or event transactions. | Which titles or events could support a separate purchase, and do the rights permit that release? |
| Hybrid | A combination, such as subscriptions alongside advertising or transactions. | Can the added choice serve distinct audience needs without making access, rights, or operations harder to manage? |
Before committing, compare willingness to pay and reach with rights costs and windows. A catalog that works for recurring access may have different economics from a one-off event or an ad-supported library. The right answer depends on your rights agreements, audience, and ability to sell and report ads; no operator-specific rights or margin data is established here.

Sign-ups alone do not show whether a VOD service is building durable use. Track what people watch, whether they return, how playback performs, and which devices they use. Where your reporting permits, connect those service measures to conversion, retention, cancellations, and title- or event-level results.

- Commercial outcomes: compare subscription conversion and retention, ad inventory and measurement, or transaction performance according to your model.
NPAW’s H1 2025 industry report analyzes data from more than 200 clients worldwide. That describes the report’s dataset, not a census of the industry. Its analysis covers engagement, streaming quality, and device performance—useful dimensions to consider when setting up your own measurement.
Reporting access varies by platform and business. Amazon’s Prime Video Slate documentation says availability depends on business line, account, licensing arrangement, and Amazon’s discretion. It lists daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting cadences, and includes conversion and retention reports for some subscription businesses. Treat that as an example of platform reporting, not a tool every VOD publisher can access.

Plan for retention, win-back, and distribution
Growth planning should account for both keeping viewers and giving former customers a reason to return. Amazon’s 2025 event release reported churn and resubscription observations attributed to Antenna. These are market observations, not a forecast for a particular service; use your own cancellation and return data to decide where to focus.

Third-party storefronts, bundles, or channel platforms may extend reach, but evaluate the commercial terms and how much control you retain over the customer relationship. Amazon’s release also describes third-party distribution findings attributed to Antenna. That supports evaluating partnerships; it does not establish that a specific partner will deliver a particular acquisition result.

Use market signals as context, not a forecast
Recent findings point to the relevance of ad-supported viewing, but they do not prove that ads will be right for every catalog or market:
- SVOD and ads: Deloitte Insights reported in 2025 that 54% of surveyed SVOD subscribers had at least one ad-supported service, eight percentage points more than in Deloitte’s 2024 report. This is a survey finding about surveyed subscribers, not all viewers or all subscriptions.
- Free ad-supported viewing: Comscore reported in 2025 that viewing hours across major free ad-supported streaming services grew 43% year over year. The figure refers to Comscore’s stated scope, not all VOD viewing.
- Predictive analytics: An Accedo study summary in 2025 said 27% of respondents used predictive analytics to forecast behavior or trends. The summary does not establish that this represents the entire industry.
These figures can inform questions to test, not substitute for your own audience and financial data. Survey associations and measured viewing growth do not establish that adopting a particular model or tactic will cause your service to grow.

Turn the decision into a testable plan
- Define the audience and offer. Identify who the catalog serves, what access they expect, and whether the proposition is a continuing library, a channel, or selected titles and events.
- Map rights and costs. Check permitted formats, territories, release windows, and costs for each title. Compare those terms with subscription, ad-supported, transactional, or hybrid access.
- Choose a model to test. Set out the expected audience payment behavior, ad-sales requirements, and distribution terms. Do not assume that a model’s industry popularity makes its unit economics work for you.
- Set measures before launch. Choose the engagement, quality, device, and business outcomes relevant to the model. Decide how often you will review them and what result would prompt a change.
- Review retention and reach. Examine cancellations, returns, and partner performance against your own baseline and commercial terms. Keep market observations separate from your service’s results.
- Adjust deliberately. If results disappoint, determine whether the issue is the offer, rights economics, playback experience, measurement, or distribution before changing several things at once.
Keep a YouTube channel live with pre-recorded VOD
A VOD business may also use uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube live stream, for example to present a scheduled channel. This is a distribution choice, not a substitute for deciding how the VOD catalog earns revenue. Only use recordings and music you have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before going live. A continuous stream does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery helps if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.
