To record HD video locally, capture it directly on a phone or use OBS Studio on a computer. In OBS, set up a scene and source, choose an output resolution and frame rate your hardware can handle, select a recording quality, and save a short test before the full take. The right settings depend on what you are recording, how much storage you have, and whether you need to combine multiple sources.
Choose a recording method
- Use a phone to record directly from its camera when you need a straightforward camera video.
- Use OBS Studio when you need to capture a screen, window, game, camera or capture card, or combine sources such as a screen and microphone.
HD describes the recorded output, not a guarantee of detail: setting an output to HD cannot add detail that the camera or source did not capture. Check the source quality as well as the recording settings.

Record HD video with OBS Studio
1. Build a scene and add sources
- In OBS Studio, create or select a scene.
- Add the material to capture as a source, such as a display, window, game, camera or capture card.
- Arrange and size sources in the preview. Check that the important content is visible and framed as intended.
2. Set the recording resolution
Open Settings → Video. OBS has two resolution controls:

- Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space in which OBS fits and arranges sources.
- Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to the recording.
Choose the desired HD output only if the source and computer can support it. If the source and output differ, OBS may scale the image, which can affect detail. Increasing the output size does not turn a lower-resolution source into genuine higher-resolution footage.

3. Choose a frame rate
Choose a frame rate suited to the subject and your computer. OBS gives 30 and 60 fps as common examples; 60 fps can be more demanding. Faster motion may look smoother at a higher frame rate, but the additional load can cause encoding or performance problems on some systems. Make a short test recording at the intended settings and review playback before relying on a long take.
4. Choose a recording quality and save location
In Settings → Output, set the recording path and choose a recording quality preset. OBS describes the trade-offs this way:

- Same as stream: uses the stream encoder settings; OBS says recordings cannot be paused with this preset.
- High Quality: aims for high quality with a medium file size. The OBS Project’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide describes it as “a high quality video with a medium file size.”
- Indistinguishable: aims for higher quality but creates larger files and can affect performance on older or weaker hardware, depending on the encoder.
- Lossless: uses the CPU encoder and produces very large files. The OBS Project estimated around 7 GB per minute for lossless recording in its 2023 guide; treat that as an estimate for that preset, not a general file-size figure for other quality levels, resolutions, frame rates or encoders.
For more control over recording and streaming settings, switch to Advanced output mode. OBS maintains a recording knowledge-base index with guides on advanced recording, formats and standard output. There is no single universally appropriate bitrate or container established for every local HD recording; the choice depends on the source, encoder, editing workflow, operating system and hardware.

5. Check audio and test the file
- Confirm that OBS is capturing the intended audio devices.
- Make a short recording using the planned scene, resolution, frame rate and quality.
- Play the file back. Check framing, picture quality, sound, smoothness and that the file saved to the expected path.
OBS recommends testing a setup ahead of a live stream; the same precaution helps catch problems before an important local recording.

Record HD video directly on a smartphone
Set up the shot
Select an HD video setting supported by your phone. For conventional widescreen footage, hold the phone horizontally and place it on a stable surface. A smartphone tripod or phone tripod with holder is optional; a stable improvised support can also work. The University of London’s 2020 home-recording guide recommends a tripod with a mobile-phone adapter while allowing a stable alternative.
The University of London guide recommends 24, 25 or 30 fps for its educational recording use case. Those are not universal preferences for every subject or platform. The guide says the highest available resolution may be 1080p or 4K, and cautions that 4K files can be cumbersome.

Improve focus and avoid interruptions
- The guide notes that a phone’s rear camera is typically better than its front-facing camera, though it can be harder to frame yourself with it.
- For a mostly static subject, consider using the phone’s auto-exposure/auto-focus lock if available; controls differ by phone.
- Airplane mode can help prevent calls or notifications from interrupting a take.
Plan storage with realistic examples
As examples specific to the University of London guide, an iPhone recording was about 60 MB per minute at 1080p 30 fps and about 170 MB per minute at 4K 30 fps. These 2020 figures are device- and setting-specific, not universal estimates for current phones. Check available storage and make a brief test, especially before a long recording.

- The recording looks soft or lacks detail: check the original source resolution and camera focus. A larger OBS output cannot restore detail that was never captured; mismatched source and output sizes may also involve scaling.
- Motion stutters or frames are missed: reduce the frame rate or recording-quality demand and test again. Higher frame rates and demanding quality settings can strain the system.
- The file is unexpectedly large: use a less demanding quality preset, lower the resolution or frame rate if suitable, or confirm that you have enough storage. OBS lossless files can be especially large.
- There is no sound or the wrong sound: verify the selected audio devices in OBS, then record and play back another short test.
- The phone video shakes or is interrupted: stabilize the phone, check framing, and consider airplane mode for a static recording.
- You cannot find the OBS recording: check the recording path in Settings → Output and confirm the destination after a test capture.
