Use video in SaaS content marketing to answer a specific buyer question, put the answer where that question arises, and measure whether viewers take a useful next step. That usually means building a mix of product walkthroughs, educational explainers, social clips, and webinars—not relying on one brand film to do every job.
Benchmarks can help you choose what to try, but they are not proof that video causes more pipeline or revenue. Treat each format and placement as a test with an audience, a purpose, and a measurable action.

Start with the buyer question, not the video format
Before scripting or recording, identify what a prospective customer needs to understand. A video should make that answer easier to find or grasp than the alternatives on the page. Map the question to the buyer’s stage, then choose a format and a next step.

Keep the promise specific. “See how a team routes an approval” gives the viewer a clearer reason to watch than a broad claim that a product is transformative. Show the workflow, the decision points, and the resulting outcome without implying that every customer will achieve the same result.

Which types of videos work for SaaS?
There is no single format that works best for every SaaS company. Wistia’s 2026 State of Video Report identifies product, educational, social, and webinar videos among the formats teams are emphasizing. Its report surveyed more than 900 professionals and analyzed over 13 million videos and 79 million hours of viewing data on its platform. Those figures describe Wistia’s survey and platform dataset, not a census of SaaS marketers or a controlled test of revenue impact.
Product walkthroughs
Demonstrate a real task a target buyer wants to complete. Focus on the part of the workflow that answers the page visitor’s question; avoid a feature-by-feature tour unless the viewer is specifically comparing features. Keep the interface current, use realistic example data, and make the next action visible near the video.
Educational explainers
Answer one question the audience already asks, such as how a process works or how to evaluate a category of tools. An explainer can stand alone on a useful page or support a more complete article. The written page should still deliver value to people who do not play the video.
Social clips
Turn a useful segment from a demo, talk, or webinar into a self-contained clip. Give it enough context to make sense without the full recording, adapt the aspect ratio and framing for the destination, and point to a relevant page when a click adds value. Wistia’s 2026 survey reports that 60% of surveyed teams used social clips to link back to their websites; that is a reported tactic, not evidence of traffic or conversion lift.

Webinars and replays
Use a webinar when the subject benefits from depth, demonstration, or audience questions. Make the event useful on its own, then edit the replay so an on-demand viewer can navigate to the relevant parts. Wistia reports that on-demand webinar plays can continue for up to 12 months after a live event in its data; this is a report finding, not a guaranteed lifespan for a particular replay.
Where should you publish and place each video?
Match distribution to the audience and the job of the video. In Wistia’s 2026 survey, 81% of teams reported posting videos on LinkedIn and 76% on YouTube. These figures indicate reported channel use among surveyed teams; they do not show that either channel will perform equally well for every SaaS audience.
- Product or sales-support page: Place a focused walkthrough next to the feature or workflow it explains, with a relevant CTA.
- Educational article or resource page: Embed an explainer where it answers a question raised by the text. Keep the article complete and useful without requiring a play.
- LinkedIn or YouTube: Publish clips or complete videos where your audience already discovers professional or educational content. Use the platform’s format and link to a relevant destination when appropriate.
- Email: Use a clear thumbnail or linked preview to direct recipients to the video or supporting page; do not assume an embedded player will work consistently in every email client.
Wistia’s platform data reports comparatively high play rates on homepages, video galleries, and product pages. That association can inform a placement test, but it is not a guarantee for your page or audience. Put the video where it helps answer the visitor’s immediate question, then inspect your own play and action data.

- Choose a buyer question. Start with one useful task or objection, not a random stretch of footage.
- Find a complete segment. Select a portion that has its own context, explanation, and payoff. If it relies on an earlier section, add a short setup rather than assuming viewers saw the full demo.
- Edit for the destination. Reframe for the intended aspect ratio, keep important interface details readable, and remove pauses or setup that do not help the clip stand alone.
- Add captions and a clear opening. Use accurate captions and make the subject apparent early. Many people encounter social video without sound, so the clip should remain understandable when muted.
- Give the clip a next step. Link to the page that continues the same topic, rather than sending every viewer to a generic homepage.
- Measure qualified response. Review engagement and relevant site visits, then check whether those visits lead to the action the clip was meant to support.
Wistia reports that teams commonly resize videos by platform. Editing tools named in its report include Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva, CapCut, iMovie, and DaVinci Resolve; these are examples reported by the vendor, not independent endorsements.

How do you measure video marketing ROI?
Decide what outcome matters before choosing a metric. A view is evidence of a play, not by itself evidence of buyer intent, a qualified lead, or revenue. Track signals at the level of the video’s purpose and connect them to downstream outcomes where your systems allow.

Wistia lists view counts, conversion assists, and social engagement among commonly used measures. Its report also says fewer than half of marketers connect video platforms to CRM or email marketing tools. If you cannot link viewing to downstream records, report that limitation rather than presenting views as ROI.
Run focused comparisons. Change one meaningful variable at a time—such as the thumbnail, opening hook, page placement, or CTA—and compare the same outcome over a period appropriate to your traffic and sales cycle. Record the audience, page, dates, and metric so a change in distribution or campaign activity is not mistaken for a video effect.
Make video discoverable, accessible, and easy to navigate
Help search engines find the video
Google Search Central says videos can appear in several Search experiences and recommends making videos findable and indexable, enabling supported features, and monitoring performance. Its guidance notes that Google can discover video references in common HTML elements such as <video>, <iframe>, <embed>, or <object>; do not rely on a user action to load the video. For video features, the page must be indexed, the video embedded and visible, and a valid thumbnail available at a stable URL.

Google’s Video SEO Best Practices guidance states: “If you have videos on your site, following these video SEO best practices can help more people find your site through video results on Google.” Search eligibility is not a promise that a video will appear in a particular result.
Use a watch page only when the video is the main purpose
If a video is the primary reason for a page to exist, consider giving it a dedicated watch page with a unique title and description. Google supports structured data, video sitemaps, and Open Graph metadata; keep all metadata accurate and consistent with what the video actually contains. A video embedded as supporting material in a general blog post does not make that post a dedicated watch page. A third-party embed may be indexed on both the platform’s page and your site page if each meets the relevant requirements.
Make long recordings easier to use
Longer videos are not inherently a problem when viewer intent justifies the time. Wistia’s 2026 report associates longer videos with higher click rates in its data, but that may reflect self-selection by more engaged viewers; it is not a reason to make every marketing video longer. For a substantial webinar or walkthrough, use chapters or timestamps so viewers can jump to the section they need. Google documents Clip and SeekToAction markup for key moments; for YouTube-hosted videos, timestamps and labels in the description can also help Google identify key moments. These options do not guarantee a rich result.

Provide captions and transcripts
Use accurate captions, particularly for social clips likely to be viewed without sound, and provide a transcript where practical. These improve usability for people who prefer reading or cannot readily play audio. Do not treat captions alone as proof of legal compliance; applicable accessibility requirements depend on context and jurisdiction.

Plan production and updates around shelf life
Choose the production effort to fit the value and expected lifespan of the asset. A short educational answer may be simpler to refresh than a polished product overview, while a product walkthrough can become misleading when the interface changes. Before publishing, assign an owner to review videos that show screens, pricing, integrations, or claims likely to change.
- Use a concise recording when the question is narrow and the viewer needs a fast answer.
- Invest in a more complete walkthrough when the buyer needs to understand a multi-step workflow.
- For a webinar, plan both the live experience and the replay: titles, description, chapters, follow-up link, and a review date.
- Keep source files and captions organized so a changed screen or claim does not require rebuilding unrelated sections.
Wistia’s 2026 report says 48% planned to increase video promotion budgets in 2026, discussing 2025 spend and plans for the following year. This is a stated plan reported by the survey, not actual 2026 spending or evidence of a resulting return.
