A frozen frame can come from the video source, encoder, connection to YouTube, or a viewer’s playback—not just a bitrate that is too low. Check those points in order: confirm the source and OBS preview are moving, inspect OBS’s dropped-frame and encoder status, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health. Test with representative motion and audio before relying on a long-running stream; no single setting can prevent every failure.
Find where the picture stops updating
Use the same content path you use for the live broadcast, and compare what you see at each stage. If the source or local preview is already static, changing network settings is unlikely to fix the underlying image. If the local preview moves but YouTube’s preview does not, investigate encoding or delivery to YouTube. If YouTube’s preview moves while one viewer reports a freeze, the issue may be on that viewer’s device or connection.

- Check the source and local preview. Confirm the video is advancing and that the OBS scene or media source is showing the expected moving image.
- Check OBS’s statistics. Look for dropped frames and encoder or rendering warnings. Note when the count or warning appears rather than changing several settings at once.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the preview, stream health, and messages to see whether YouTube is receiving an updating image and audio.
- Compare with a viewer. If the Control Room preview is moving, ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers, devices, and networks. One viewer’s buffering does not establish that the broadcast source is frozen.
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. Its guidance also notes that YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMatch encoder settings to YouTube’s requirements
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s reviewed guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported codecs, up to 60 frames per second. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. These settings help avoid configuration and delivery problems, but cannot correct a static source, software fault, power loss, or upstream outage.

Choose a bitrate for the actual codec and output
Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not treat one bitrate as universal. For example, YouTube’s current guidance lists these recommended rates:
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are recommended rates, not the separately listed minimum rates. Confirm YouTube’s table for your chosen output before a long broadcast, since platform guidance can change.
Keep the connection within its stable capacity
A configured bitrate must fit the upload connection reliably over time, not merely during a brief speed test. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. If your output rate is too ambitious for the sustained connection, lower it while keeping the codec, resolution, and frame rate within YouTube’s guidance.

Fix OBS dropped frames and disconnections
OBS explains that dropped frames indicate the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. This is different from an encoder/rendering warning and from a viewer buffering on their own connection. Work through network causes first when OBS reports dropped frames.
- Reduce the bitrate to a rate the connection can sustain, while remaining consistent with YouTube’s settings for your output.
- Use wired Ethernet if you are streaming over Wi-Fi, especially where Wi-Fi signal or congestion varies.
- Check the network path: inspect the router, modem, network drivers, cables, and any VPN, security, or network-optimization software that could interfere.
- Change one variable at a time and watch whether dropped frames or disconnections improve.
- Contact your ISP if the issue persists after local checks.
OBS’s 2024 connection troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a rough starting point for bitrate. That is an OBS troubleshooting suggestion, not a YouTube guarantee; it does not replace matching YouTube’s codec, resolution, and frame-rate recommendations. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
If OBS has no dropped frames but viewers see buffering
OBS notes that viewers use different devices and internet connections, and may buffer even when the broadcaster has no dropped frames. First compare the YouTube Live Control Room preview with what affected viewers see. If the preview continues to move, ask viewers to try another device or connection before changing the stream configuration.

If buffering is widespread, a lower bitrate or output quality may improve access for viewers on slower connections. Make that change deliberately: select a codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate guidance. Buffering at a viewer’s end alone does not prove the broadcast image itself is frozen. See OBS’s streaming issues guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Distinguish encoding overload from network trouble
When OBS reports encoder or rendering trouble rather than dropped frames, investigate the scene and encoding workload instead of assuming the internet connection is at fault. Reduce unnecessary scene complexity or output demands as a diagnostic step, then observe whether the warning changes. Hardware-encoder options depend on the system: NVIDIA’s NVENC guidance discusses GPU utilization and encoder options, but a GPU purchase or encoder swap is not a universal first fix. Confirm that encoder or rendering overload is actually present before considering hardware changes. See NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan a realistic test and monitor the long run
- Run the intended source, scene, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together before the scheduled stream.
- Include motion and audio representative of the actual content; a static test screen will not expose every source or playback issue.
- Observe the local preview, OBS statistics, and YouTube Live Control Room stream health and messages during the test.
- If a problem appears, identify which stage first stops updating, change one relevant variable, and repeat the test.
- During the event, continue checking stream health and messages. A successful test reduces avoidable uncertainty but does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Do not transplant settings from another streaming service. For example, Cloudflare’s guidance uses its own keyframe and upload-to-duration diagnostics; YouTube’s reviewed guidance specifies a two-second keyframe recommendation and a four-second maximum. Use the platform’s own requirements for the destination. See Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
