1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo run your own nameservers with VestaCP, create two child (glue) hostnames—such as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com—at your domain registrar, point both to the VestaCP server’s public IP address, delegate your domain to those hostnames, and configure the same nameservers inside VestaCP. Add the nameserver domain with DNS Support enabled, select the child-ns DNS template, and place the two hostnames in the default package. You can then delegate additional domains to the same pair.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The registrar creates the delegation glue; VestaCP serves the authoritative DNS zones. Both sides must match exactly. A mismatch is the usual reason a newly configured custom nameserver fails.

A custom or “vanity” nameserver is a hostname under your own domain that answers DNS queries for domains you host. Instead of giving customers a provider’s nameserver names, you can use addresses such as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.
Three separate DNS functions are involved:
- Child (glue) host records at the registrar: These tell the parent registry that
ns1.yourdomain.comandns2.yourdomain.comresolve to the VestaCP server’s IP address. The registrar may call this area “private nameservers,” “registered nameservers,” “host records,” or “glue records.” - Domain delegation: The domain is assigned those two hostnames as its authoritative nameservers.
- VestaCP DNS zones: VestaCP generates and serves the zone data, including NS and A records, for domains added to the panel.
The official Vesta Control Panel guide describes the requirement this way: “If you want to manage DNS zones using Vesta Control Panel, you will have to create 2 dns records, point them to server IP address and use them as a nameservers for the domain.” The two records are the child hostnames, not ordinary records added only inside a zone.

Decide your nameserver design before changing anything
Use two hostnames under a domain you control
Pick a parent domain that you will keep registered and accessible even if a hosted website has a problem. A conventional pair is:
ns1.yourdomain.comns2.yourdomain.com
Use simple, consistent spelling. Every place in this setup—the registrar’s glue records, domain delegation, VestaCP package, and DNS zone—must use the exact same hostnames.
One server versus separate DNS infrastructure
The basic VestaCP example points both child nameservers to the same public server IP. This is straightforward and appropriate for a small installation, but it does not provide DNS availability if that server or its network is unreachable. A secondary DNS service or a second server on another network can improve resilience, but it requires separate zone-transfer or synchronization planning. Do not advertise a redundant design until the second service is actually authoritative and tested.
Registrar-managed glue versus externally managed DNS
In the normal VestaCP arrangement, the registrar stores the child/glue objects and VestaCP serves the zones. An external DNS provider can instead be authoritative, but then the provider’s nameservers—not your VestaCP pair—must be delegated at the registrar, and VestaCP is no longer the authoritative DNS service for those domains.
Prerequisites and information to collect
- A registered domain you control, with permission to change its nameservers and create child/glue hosts.
- A VestaCP installation reachable on a stable, publicly routable IP address.
- The exact public IPv4 address of the server. If you intend to use IPv6, plan the corresponding AAAA records and confirm that your registrar and network support them; the basic VestaCP example uses one server IP.
- Administrative access to the VestaCP panel and, if you will use the command line, shell access with the rights required by the VestaCP commands.
- A short maintenance window. VestaCP’s guide says DNS records may take up to 24 hours to start working after the change.
Write down the intended values before beginning:
| Item | Example | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Nameserver 1 | ns1.yourdomain.com |
Registrar glue, delegation, VestaCP package |
| Nameserver 2 | ns2.yourdomain.com |
Registrar glue, delegation, VestaCP package |
| Server address | 203.0.113.10 |

| Nameserver domain | yourdomain.com |

Step 1: Create the child nameservers at your registrar
Open the registrar’s host-record area
Sign in to the registrar that manages yourdomain.com. Look for a control named “Register nameserver,” “Create private nameserver,” “Child nameservers,” “Host records,” or “Glue records.” This is different from the page where you simply select a domain’s nameservers.
Create both host objects
- Create a host named
ns1underyourdomain.comand assign the VestaCP server’s public IP address. - Create a second host named
ns2under the same domain and assign the intended IP address. In the basic one-server design, both point to that server. - Save the objects and verify that the registrar displays the complete hostnames as
ns1.yourdomain.comandns2.yourdomain.com.
Do not enter ns1.yourdomain.com as an ordinary A record and assume that is enough. The parent registry needs glue for a nameserver that is itself inside the domain being delegated; only the registrar’s child-host function provides that relationship.
Delegate the nameserver domain
After the child objects exist, set yourdomain.com to use ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com as its nameservers. Some registrars save the child objects first and require a separate nameserver change; others show both actions in one workflow. Complete both.
Step 2: Add the nameserver domain in VestaCP
- Sign in to VestaCP.
- Open the user account that will own the DNS zone.
- Open WEB or the domain-management area and add
yourdomain.com. - Leave DNS Support enabled when adding the domain.
- Open the DNS section, edit the domain, and select the
child-nstemplate. - Save the domain and template choice.
The template choice matters because it gives the zone the records VestaCP expects when the domain supplies child nameservers. If you add the domain with DNS Support disabled, VestaCP will not generate the authoritative DNS zone you need.
Check the generated zone
After saving, inspect the domain’s DNS records in VestaCP. You should see NS records using the two custom hostnames and address records that allow those hostnames to resolve to the server. If the values differ from the registrar entries, correct the VestaCP configuration before delegating other domains.

Step 3: Put the nameservers in the default package
VestaCP packages define defaults applied when domains are created. To make your pair available for future domains:
- Open Packages in VestaCP.
- Edit the package named
default(or the package you use for new domains). - Set the package’s nameserver fields to
ns1.yourdomain.comandns2.yourdomain.com. - Save the package.
This does not change the registrar delegation by itself. It ensures that newly created VestaCP zones are generated with the same NS hostnames you registered at the registrar. Existing domains may need to be edited or rebuilt separately, depending on how they were created.
Step 4: Delegate additional hosted domains
For every other domain that should use this VestaCP server, first create its DNS domain in VestaCP with DNS Support enabled. Then, at that domain’s registrar, replace the current authoritative nameservers with:
ns1.yourdomain.comns2.yourdomain.com
The hosted domain does not need its own child nameserver objects when it uses your existing pair. The child objects belong to the parent domain that contains ns1 and ns2. Make sure the domain is added to VestaCP before delegation so the server is ready to answer when recursive resolvers begin querying it.

Step 5: Verify each layer of the configuration
Verify at the registrar
- Both child/glue objects exist.
- Each object points to the intended public IP address.
- The parent domain is delegated to the exact hostnames, with no spelling, punctuation, or trailing-domain error.
Verify in VestaCP
- The nameserver domain was added with DNS Support enabled.
- The domain uses the
child-nstemplate. - The default package contains the same two NS hostnames.
- Each hosted domain has a DNS zone and NS records that match the delegation.
Verify externally
Use a DNS diagnostic service or a command-line resolver from a network outside the server. Query the NS records for the domain and then query A or AAAA records for each nameserver hostname. Test from more than one resolver if possible; cached answers can make one location appear correct while another still has the old delegation.

Allow up to 24 hours for the change to become visible everywhere, as stated in the VestaCP guide. During that period, a mixture of old and new answers is normal because recursive resolvers honor their cached TTL values.

The VestaCP CLI can inspect and change nameserver settings without relying on panel screens. Run commands with the appropriate VestaCP administrative privileges and substitute your real values.
| Command | Purpose | Example usage |
|---|---|---|
v-list-user-ns |
Lists the nameservers configured for a user. | v-list-user-ns admin |
v-change-user-ns USER NS1 NS2 |
Changes a user’s nameserver pair. | v-change-user-ns admin ns1.yourdomain.com ns2.yourdomain.com |
v-add-dns-domain USER DOMAIN IP [NS1] [NS2] |
Creates a DNS zone and supplies its nameserver values. | v-add-dns-domain admin example.com 203.0.113.10 ns1.yourdomain.com ns2.yourdomain.com |
v-list-dns-records |
Inspects DNS records managed by VestaCP. | Use the command’s domain and user arguments for the zone you want to inspect. |
v-rebuild-dns-domains |
Rebuilds DNS configuration from VestaCP’s stored settings. | Run after correcting settings or changing a DNS template. |
Check the command’s built-in help on your installed version if its argument order differs. A command can rebuild a zone from incorrect stored values, so inspect the user, domain, IP, and NS settings first.
Changing the DNS template safely
VestaCP templates are stored in /usr/local/vesta/data/templates/. If you edit a template, treat the change as a configuration migration rather than a cosmetic panel edit:
- Back up the existing template and record the intended change.
- Apply the edit to the correct DNS template.
- Confirm the user and package nameserver settings still contain the desired hostnames.
- Run
v-rebuild-dns-domainsso generated DNS configuration reflects the template. - Inspect representative zones and query them externally before applying the change to every domain.
Changing a template does not register glue records or alter registrar delegation. Those operations remain outside VestaCP.

Troubleshooting: symptom-to-cause checks
The nameserver hostname does not resolve
Check the child/glue objects first. Confirm that both ns1 and ns2 were created in the registrar’s host-record area and point to the correct public IP. An A record created only inside the VestaCP zone cannot replace missing parent-level glue.
The domain still shows the old nameservers
Confirm that the domain itself—not only the child objects—was delegated to ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. Then account for resolver caching and the up-to-24-hour propagation period cited by VestaCP.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
VestaCP serves different NS values
Open the domain in VestaCP and verify DNS Support and the child-ns template. Edit the default package if newly created zones inherit the wrong values. Use v-list-user-ns, v-list-dns-records, and, after correcting the stored settings, v-rebuild-dns-domains.
One hosted domain fails while others work
Compare that domain’s registrar delegation with its VestaCP zone. Ensure the domain exists in VestaCP, has a generated DNS zone, and uses the same NS hostnames as the delegation. A single typo or a zone created without DNS Support can affect one domain without affecting the rest.
Only one nameserver responds
In a one-server design, both nameserver hostnames normally point to the same IP, so a failure of that server affects both. If the two hostnames point to different addresses, verify that each address runs an authoritative DNS service and contains the zone. Do not point a child hostname at an unconfigured secondary system merely to make the delegation appear redundant.
Operational choices and their trade-offs
| Decision | Simpler option | More resilient or automated option | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where glue is managed | Registrar child/glue records | External DNS architecture | Registrar glue is direct and easy to audit; external DNS requires separate authoritative-zone management. |
| Server layout | Both names point to one VestaCP IP | Separate secondary DNS on another network | One server is easier to operate but has a shared failure point; a secondary requires synchronization and testing. |
| Configuration method | VestaCP panel | CLI scripts using the VestaCP commands | The panel is visual; CLI automation is repeatable but requires careful argument and permission handling. |
| Change rollout | Edit one domain manually | Update package/template and rebuild | Bulk changes are faster but can affect every generated zone, so back up and validate first. |
Maintenance checklist
- Keep the parent domain registered and renew it before expiration; its child nameservers are dependencies for every delegated domain.
- Record the current public IP addresses and update both registrar glue and VestaCP records together if the server moves.
- After changing an IP, query the child hostnames and at least one hosted domain from an external resolver.
- Keep the two NS hostnames identical across registrar delegation, VestaCP packages, templates, and generated zones.
- Back up VestaCP configuration before editing templates or running a rebuild across many domains.
- If you add a secondary DNS provider or another server, document which system is authoritative and how zones are synchronized.
Bottom line
A working VestaCP custom-nameserver setup is a coordinated chain: register ns1 and ns2 as child hosts at the registrar, point them to the VestaCP server IP, delegate the parent domain, add that domain in VestaCP with DNS Support and the child-ns template, and set the same pair in the default package. Repeat the zone and delegation steps for hosted domains, then verify each layer and allow DNS caches time to expire. When the registrar and VestaCP contain matching values, VestaCP can authoritatively serve the zones through your own nameserver hostnames.
