How to Prevent Website Downtime: A Practical Guide

A practical, technically detailed guide to preventing website downtime: map dependencies, remove single points of failure, monitor real user journeys, test disaster recovery and communicate clearly during incidents.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventing downtime is less about finding one perfect hosting plan and more about removing failure points, detecting user-visible problems quickly, recovering within a defined window, and reducing the damage while repairs are underway. Map every dependency—DNS, certificates, CDN, application servers, databases, queues, payment services, third-party APIs and deployment tools—then give each one an owner, fallback and tested recovery procedure.

This guide shows how to set realistic availability and data-loss objectives, build redundancy, monitor the complete customer journey, make deployments reversible, test backups and communicate clearly during incidents.

Start with an availability target, RTO and RPO

“Acceptable downtime” is a business decision, not a universal technical number. A personal blog, an internal portal and a checkout service can reasonably choose different targets. Set the target before buying redundancy so spending and engineering effort match the harm caused by an outage.

Availability target

Availability is the proportion of the agreed measurement period during which the service performs its intended function. The Microsoft Azure Architecture Center uses 99.9% as an example target; that permits about nine hours of unavailability in a year, or roughly ten minutes in a week. It is an illustration, not a requirement for every site.

Calculate your own budget with:

allowed downtime = measurement period × (1 − availability target)

Define what counts as unavailable. A page that returns HTTP 200 but cannot complete sign-in or payment is not healthy from the customer’s perspective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery time objective (RTO)

RTO is the maximum acceptable time to restore service after a disruptive event. A 15-minute RTO requires a different design from a four-hour RTO: you may need automated failover, pre-provisioned capacity and an on-call engineer rather than a manual rebuild.

Recovery point objective (RPO)

RPO is the maximum acceptable amount of data loss, measured in time. An RPO of 15 minutes means the business accepts losing up to 15 minutes of writes in a severe failure. RPO determines backup frequency, replication design and whether asynchronous replication is sufficient.

Record the availability target, RTO and RPO for each important function—not just for the website as a whole. Product browsing may tolerate read-only operation, while order creation may require a stricter objective.

Map the complete dependency chain

Make a service map that starts with a visitor’s browser and ends with the data and external systems required to complete a transaction. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Domain registrar and authoritative DNS providers
  • TLS certificate issuance, storage and renewal
  • CDN, reverse proxy, web application firewall and load balancer
  • Application servers, containers, virtual machines and orchestration
  • Primary and replica databases, caches, object storage and queues
  • Payment, identity, email, search, analytics and other third-party APIs
  • Source control, build systems, deployment tooling and configuration stores
  • Monitoring, alerting, logging, tracing and status-page infrastructure
  • People, credentials, network paths and cloud regions required to operate the service

For every dependency, document its owner, service-level agreement or objective, failure modes, detection signal, fallback, recovery steps and last test date. Azure guidance recommends monitoring supplier SLAs and retaining evidence that can support an SLA claim. A spreadsheet is adequate initially; the important part is keeping it current and usable during an incident.

Find single points of failure

Mark any component for which one failure can make the public service unavailable. Common examples are one DNS provider, one hosting region, one database instance, one certificate-renewal account, one network route, one administrator’s credentials or one deployment pipeline. Prioritize the points whose failure violates your RTO or affects the most valuable customer journey.

Remove single points of failure

Hosting and compute

Run more than one application instance when the business impact justifies it. Place instances on separate failure domains so a host, rack or zone problem does not remove all capacity. Health checks should test the actual ability to serve traffic and should automatically remove unhealthy instances from rotation.

Redundant instances do not help if every instance depends on one exhausted database connection pool, one shared filesystem or one unavailable secret. Trace dependencies below the web tier and give stateful systems their own availability design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS and public connectivity

DNS is part of the production path. Use highly available DNS and avoid concentrating critical domains, registration, authoritative hosting and renewal access in one failure-prone arrangement. AWS recommends highly available DNS, CDNs, API gateways, load balancing or reverse proxies for public endpoints. GOV.UK guidance likewise recommends redundancy and avoiding dependence on one vendor where that dependence creates unacceptable risk.

Keep emergency access to registrar and DNS accounts separate from the systems they control. Store recovery codes securely, use more than one authorized operator and rehearse changing records under pressure. A resilient origin cannot help users who cannot resolve the domain.

Data stores

Choose replication and failover according to RPO and RTO. A read replica may improve read capacity but is not automatically a write failover. Document which copy is authoritative, how promotion occurs, how applications change connection settings and how conflicting writes are handled after recovery.

Test the application against a failed or deliberately isolated data-store instance. This reveals hidden assumptions such as hard-coded hostnames, non-idempotent retries, exhausted connection pools and migrations that only work on the primary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Third-party services

External APIs can turn a partial failure into a total outage. Set timeouts, bounded retries with backoff, circuit breakers and clear error handling. Decide which features can be disabled when an integration fails. For example, a recommendation or analytics call should not block a product page, while a payment failure should stop order confirmation rather than create an ambiguous order.

Design graceful degradation instead of an all-or-nothing site

GOV.UK states that “Your service should have more possible states than simply ‘on’ or ‘off’.” Model those states explicitly:

  • Read-only: visitors can view safe, recently verified content while writes are paused.
  • Queued: noncritical work is accepted into a durable queue for later processing.
  • Maintenance: a clear page explains the interruption and provides the next update time.

Use feature flags to switch off failing integrations without redeploying. Queue jobs only when the operation is safe to retry and users receive an honest status. Never display a success message until the authoritative system confirms the write.

Make deployments reversible

Deployments are a frequent cause of preventable downtime because they change many variables at once. Use a pre-production environment that resembles production, automated checks and small, observable releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Validate before release. Run unit, integration, migration and security checks. Include a smoke test for DNS resolution, TLS negotiation, the home page, authentication and the most valuable transaction.
  2. Release gradually. Send a small portion of traffic to the new version or deploy to one failure domain first. Compare error rate, latency and transaction success with the existing version.
  3. Gate on health. Stop promotion automatically when user-facing indicators cross an agreed threshold.
  4. Keep rollback ready. Preserve the previous application version and compatible configuration. Test the rollback path, not merely the forward deployment.
  5. Handle database changes safely. Prefer backward-compatible schema changes: add new fields, deploy code that understands both versions, migrate data, then remove obsolete structures in a later change.

The GOV.UK service standard calls for regular software changes without significant downtime and monitoring backed by a sustainable response plan. A rollback that requires an unavailable build system or an engineer who is not on call is not a real rollback.

Monitor from the customer’s perspective

Infrastructure graphs alone cannot tell you whether customers can complete a task. Combine external synthetic checks with internal telemetry.

External checks

Run checks from more than one network or geography where your audience warrants it. Test:

  • DNS resolution and response correctness
  • TLS certificate validity and handshake completion
  • HTTP status, redirect behavior and response body
  • Latency and timeout rates
  • Key transactions such as sign-in, search, checkout or file upload

Use a separate monitoring path from the production application so an outage cannot silence the alarm. Avoid alerting on one failed probe; require a sensible confirmation rule that catches real failures without hiding short incidents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Internal telemetry

Azure recommends endpoint monitoring, exception and fault logs, request tracing, performance metrics, timestamps and SLA analysis. Collect those signals together so an alert can answer what failed, when it started, who was affected and whether recovery is progressing.

Track failover readiness, backup and restore success, replication lag and the amount of manual intervention required. Microsoft describes a health model that measures overall workload health across quality attributes, not only uptime. Include capacity, dependency errors, queue age, database saturation and certificate-expiry warnings in that model.

Retain evidence

Keep time-stamped probe results, logs, traces, deployment records, incident notes and provider notifications for a period that supports trend analysis and any SLA claim. Synchronize clocks across systems. Without consistent timestamps, it is difficult to establish outage duration or correlate a code change with a failure.

Back up data and rehearse disaster recovery

A backup is useful only if it can be restored within the required RTO and meets the RPO. AWS notes that backups and redundant workload components are the starting point of a disaster-recovery strategy; they are not the finished strategy.

Build recoverable copies

  • Keep copies outside the production failure domain so a compromised account, region or storage system cannot erase every copy.
  • Protect backups from unauthorized deletion and encryption attacks with separate credentials and access controls.
  • Back up databases, object data, configuration, secrets-recovery material, DNS records and deployment artifacts—not just uploaded files.
  • Record retention, encryption, ownership and the exact restore order.

Verify and test

Automated backup-success notifications do not prove that the contents are complete or usable. Perform scheduled restore tests into an isolated environment. Verify row counts or object inventories, application startup, permissions, migrations and representative user journeys. Measure elapsed restoration time and compare it with the RTO.

AWS recommends testing the disaster-recovery implementation, automating recovery where practical and managing configuration drift at the recovery site. A recovery environment that has not received current configuration, dependencies or credentials may fail exactly when production does.

Choose a recovery pattern

Pattern Typical behavior Operational trade-off
Backup and restore Rebuild from stored copies after failure Lowest ongoing complexity, but restoration is slower and depends on verified backups
Warm standby A smaller, ready environment is kept synchronized and can be scaled up Faster recovery with recurring infrastructure and replication cost
Active-active Multiple environments serve traffic concurrently Fastest continuity potential, but highest cost and data-consistency complexity
Multi-region deployment Traffic can move between geographic regions Reduces regional risk, while introducing routing, replication and operational complexity

No universal prices or recovery times are established for these patterns. Select one by comparing required RTO, RPO, geographic risk, dependency concentration, automation and restore-test frequency.

Understand what a CDN can—and cannot—do

A CDN can continue serving cached static files when an origin is temporarily unresponsive. Cloudflare describes typical cache TTLs of roughly 30 seconds to five minutes in its guidance. Once the TTL expires, requests normally return to the origin, so caching is a short-duration mitigation rather than a disaster-recovery plan.

Before relying on cache during an incident:

  • Identify which pages and assets are safe to serve when stale.
  • Exclude personalized, private or transaction-sensitive responses from public caching.
  • Define how cache invalidation works after recovery.
  • Test behavior when the origin returns errors, slow responses or incomplete content.
  • Keep a functioning origin, data recovery plan and status channel; the CDN cannot recreate uncached dynamic state.

Prepare an incident response and communication plan

Write a runbook before the outage. It should include alert triage, severity definitions, owner and backup contacts, access procedures, rollback commands, failover steps, decision points for disabling features and the criteria for declaring recovery.

Maintain a status page on separate infrastructure. GOV.UK recommends a status page for unexpected downtime and out-of-hours support planning. Each update should state:

  • What functions are affected and what still works
  • When the incident began, using a clear time zone
  • What the team is investigating or changing
  • A safe workaround, if one exists
  • When the next update will be published

Do not claim resolution merely because servers are reachable. Confirm the critical synthetic transactions, data integrity and backlog processing first.

Test failure scenarios deliberately

Reliability claims are hypotheses until tested. Schedule exercises that match your dependency map and objectives:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Terminate an application instance and verify health-check removal and replacement.
  • Block access to a database replica or primary and confirm the documented failover path.
  • Simulate a failed third-party API and verify timeouts, circuit breakers and feature flags.
  • Restore a recent backup into an isolated environment and measure the result against RTO and RPO.
  • Test DNS or CDN control-plane access, certificate renewal and emergency credentials.
  • Run a rollback during a controlled release and confirm monitoring detects the change.

After every exercise, record detection time, decision time, recovery time, data loss, manual steps and unexpected dependencies. Update the runbook and service map rather than treating the exercise as complete when traffic returns.

Compare prevention approaches by the outcomes they buy

Control Primary risk reduced What to measure Common limitation
Redundant application instances Host or instance failure Failover success, health-check accuracy, capacity Does not remove database, DNS or dependency failures
Highly available DNS and public edge Resolution and network-edge failure Resolution success, propagation procedure, provider incidents Cannot repair an unhealthy origin
CDN caching Brief origin interruption for cacheable content Cache-hit behavior, TTL, stale-content safety TTL expiry exposes the origin; dynamic state is not recovered
Automated failover Slow manual response Detection-to-failover time, false positives, data consistency Can amplify an error if health checks are wrong
Backups and restore tests Data corruption or total environment loss Restore time, restore completeness, achieved RPO Untested or co-located copies may be unusable
Graceful degradation Partial failure becoming total outage Functions retained, queue safety, customer messaging Requires explicit product decisions and honest UX
External and internal monitoring Late detection and weak diagnosis Detection time, coverage, evidence retention Alerts without ownership create noise rather than action

Troubleshoot the most common downtime patterns

Users report errors but server CPU looks normal

Check DNS, TLS, CDN behavior, load-balancer health, dependency timeouts and the exact transaction rather than host utilization. A healthy server can still return unusable pages when an external API or database is failing.

Only some regions or networks are affected

Compare synthetic probes, DNS answers, routing, CDN points of presence and certificate chains by location. Avoid declaring recovery based on an internal network that bypasses the public path.

Failover creates duplicate or missing work

Inspect replication lag, retry behavior, idempotency keys and queue acknowledgements. Pause writes if necessary, reconcile authoritative records and communicate any confirmed data-loss window according to the RPO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The site works after deployment but becomes unstable later

Correlate timestamps with traffic, queue growth, memory use, connection pools, scheduled jobs and cache expiry. Gradual failure often indicates a resource leak, a migration issue or a dependency limit that a basic smoke test did not exercise.

Backups report success but restoration fails

Check whether all required data, configuration, permissions and secrets-recovery steps were included. Run restores regularly in an isolated environment and retain the measured result, not just a success flag.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Week one: inventory. Draw the request and dependency path, assign owners and identify single points of failure.
  2. Next: objectives. Set availability targets, RTO and RPO for each critical function and define what “available” means.
  3. Then: visibility. Add external synthetic transactions, internal logs, traces, metrics, timestamps and actionable alerts.
  4. Next: safe change. Add pre-production checks, gradual releases, health gates and a tested rollback.
  5. Then: recovery. Separate backups from production, automate verification and perform measured restore and failover exercises.
  6. Finally: resilience. Add redundancy where the risk justifies its cost, implement graceful degradation and publish an incident communication plan.

Review the map, objectives and runbooks after major architecture, vendor or deployment changes. Google Cloud describes reliability as the ability to consistently perform intended functions and maintain uninterrupted service within defined conditions; those defined conditions are yours to specify, measure and test.

Downtime-prevention checklist

  • Availability target, RTO and RPO are written for each critical function.
  • DNS, certificates, CDN, compute, data, integrations and operations have named owners.
  • No unaccepted single point of failure remains in the public request path.
  • Health checks remove unhealthy capacity and have been tested during failure.
  • Deployments are gradual, observable and reversible.
  • External checks test DNS, TLS, HTTP and real customer transactions.
  • Logs, traces, metrics and timestamps are retained long enough to investigate incidents.
  • Backups are separate, protected, verified and restored on a schedule.
  • Failover and restore results meet the stated RTO and RPO.
  • Read-only, queued or feature-disabled modes are defined for partial failures.
  • A separate status page and out-of-hours response plan are ready.
  • Every exercise produces runbook and architecture updates.
