Most Android phones do not provide a universal aperture slider. Samsung’s Virtual Aperture in Expert RAW is a separate, software-based effect available on supported models; Samsung’s cited guide lists the Galaxy S25 series.
First check what “variable aperture” means on your phone
A physical variable aperture changes the opening inside a camera lens. Android’s camera metadata says an aperture request is supported only on camera devices with a variable-aperture lens; a camera without one reports its fixed aperture value. A third-party camera app cannot add a mechanical iris the phone does not have. Android camera metadata

Samsung’s Virtual Aperture is different: it uses depth-map information and AI-based processing to create an aperture-like depth-of-field and bokeh effect. The phone captures with one physical aperture value; the Virtual Aperture control does not mechanically open or close the lens or directly change how much light reaches the sensor. | What changes | Physical variable aperture | Samsung Virtual Aperture |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | The lens opening changes, if the camera module supports it. | Software renders aperture-like depth and bokeh effects. |
| Light through the lens | A wider or narrower opening can change incoming light. | The virtual control does not mechanically change incoming light. |
| Availability | Depends on the specific camera hardware and manufacturer app. | Model and software dependent; Samsung’s cited guide lists the Galaxy S25 series. |

Why some phones have an aperture setting and others do not
The setting depends on the camera module, not simply on whether the phone has a Pro mode. Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and S9+ are historical examples of physical dual aperture: Samsung described F/1.5 and F/2.4 positions on the S9 rear camera and S9+ wide rear camera. The camera used the wider F/1.5 position in dim conditions and the narrower F/2.4 position in brighter scenes. That example does not establish that newer Galaxy phones have the same mechanism. How to use Samsung Virtual Aperture
Samsung’s cited feature guide names the Galaxy S25 series. It also mentions planned support for later flagships, but that forward-looking note does not confirm that every subsequent model supports the feature. Check your exact model and current local app availability before relying on it. Samsung Members: Virtual Aperture (Expert RAW)
- Open the Expert RAW app on a supported phone.
- Tap the Virtual Aperture icon. Samsung lists the feature among Expert RAW’s Labs features.
- Adjust the displayed aperture effect in the preview. Samsung documents 22 settings from F1.4 to F16, with continuous zoom from 1× to 3×.
- Compose and take the photo. Review the subject edges and background blur to decide whether the simulated effect looks right for the image.
The displayed f-number is a software effect here, not a physical aperture setting. Samsung says its Virtual Aperture development team built a training database from more than 200,000 photos captured simultaneously with Galaxy and DSLR cameras. That is Samsung’s reported development-data figure, not an independent image-quality measurement. Samsung Global Newsroom: Galaxy S25 camera development interview

If the Virtual Aperture icon is missing
- Confirm the exact phone model; feature availability is model dependent.
- Check that Expert RAW is available and updated for your device and region.
- Check the phone’s software version. Samsung says available features and settings may vary by model and software version. Samsung India Support: Galaxy camera exposure controls
- Do not assume a generic camera app can enable Samsung’s proprietary Virtual Aperture or create a physical variable aperture.
Aperture is not exposure compensation
For a physical lens, a lower f-number means a wider opening, which can admit more light and produce shallower depth of field; a higher f-number means a narrower opening. With Virtual Aperture, the number labels the rendered depth and bokeh effect instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your goal is to make a photo brighter or darker, use exposure compensation rather than looking for an aperture control. Samsung’s documented path is Camera app → quick control menu → Exposure icon → adjust the range. Samsung says this exposure setting resets when the Camera app is closed, and that menu availability varies by model and software. Samsung India Support: Galaxy camera exposure controls
