To use a Twitch command, type it into the chat box and press Enter. Type / to see commands available in that chat. What you can run depends on your role: viewers, moderators and broadcasters do not all have the same permissions.

Twitch’s Chat Commands guide gives the same basic instruction: type the required command into the text box and hit Enter. In command documentation, curly braces mark required values and square brackets mark optional ones; they are notation, not characters to enter. For example, in /timeout username [seconds], replace username with the account name, and include a number of seconds only if you want to specify a duration.
Choose a command by what you need to do
These examples show common uses, but they are not available to every role. Check the slash menu and Twitch’s current help pages for exact syntax and access.
Check channel roles

/modslists the channel’s moderators. -
/vipslists the channel’s VIPs.
Broadcasters can manage these roles with /mod username, /unmod username, /vip username and /unvip username. Twitch documents role commands in its channel-role help page.

Moderate chat

/timeout username [seconds]temporarily prevents a user from chatting. Twitch documents a default duration when you omit the optional seconds value. -
/clearclears previous chat history for broadcasters and moderators.

These controls are for channel management, not general viewer use. Twitch also lists commands for announcements, shoutouts, user restrictions, polls, raids, markers, goals and predictions; permissions vary by role and feature.

Know whether a command is from Twitch or a bot
Twitch-native chat commands generally begin with /. Third-party chat bots commonly use commands beginning with !, but the bot and channel determine the syntax. Twitch’s guide advises contacting the bot developer if a bot command has a problem; Twitch’s chat-bot information explains their separate role in chat.
Fix a command that does not work

Check spelling and syntax. Use the command menu or Twitch’s help page to confirm the spelling and any required values.

Check your role. A command may require moderator, VIP or broadcaster permissions. Twitch says commands you cannot use may disappear from the available-command list.

Read the error. A misspelled or nonexistent command can produce an “Unrecognized Command” error; other errors may explain the issue or offer a solution.

For a bot command, contact the bot developer. Twitch does not control the syntax or troubleshooting for third-party bot commands.
Twitch’s Help Center pages do not show publication or update dates, and commands or permissions can change. Consult the linked official pages for the latest syntax and availability.
