To play an audio file, find it in your device’s file manager and open it with the audio player already installed. If it will not play, check the player’s format and codec support before installing anything or converting the file: a filename extension alone does not tell you whether the audio inside is compatible.
Play the file with an app already on your device
- Find the file. Open the device’s file manager and locate the downloaded or stored audio file.
- Open it. Tap or double-click the file. If the operating system asks which app to use, select an audio player.
- Check the output. If playback starts but you cannot hear it, check the selected speaker or headphones and the device’s volume.
The exact file-manager workflow varies by operating system, device, and app. Start with the built-in player rather than assuming you need a separate download.

Why an audio file may not play
Audio support depends on the player, operating system, app version, and the encoding inside the file. The extension is a useful clue, but it is not a guarantee: a file ending in .wav, for example, may contain audio encoded in a way the player cannot decode. Microsoft describes WAV as a container and notes that codec availability affects playback in Windows Media Player 12. See Microsoft’s supported file types for Windows Media Player.
Check the full filename extension, then compare the format with documentation for the particular player and platform. Do not assume a format list for one app applies to every player on the same device.

Check support for your device
Windows
Microsoft’s compatibility information is for Windows Media Player 12. Its listed formats include MP3, AAC/ADTS, M4A, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and WMA. Microsoft notes that additional formats may work if the needed codecs are installed; support is not universal across every Windows player or version. Android
Android’s supported-format information lists codecs, containers, and version requirements. It includes entries such as MP3, FLAC, and PCM/WAVE, but the relevant support depends on the Android version and the format details. A platform-level capability also does not guarantee that every file manager or audio app offers the same way to open a local file. Check the Android Developers supported formats table for your version.

Other platforms
Compatibility can vary by operating system and app. The available documentation here does not establish a current, comprehensive consumer compatibility list for Apple devices, so check current Apple support information for the specific iPhone, iPad, or Mac and app rather than relying on older developer documentation.
Try another player if the built-in one cannot open it
A player with broader documented format support can be a reasonable next step. VideoLAN documents VLC as supporting common audio formats including MP3, AAC, FLAC, and WAV, and describes playback from files, discs, devices, and streams. Its feature list is general product documentation, not a guarantee that every build or device handles every specific file identically. See VLC’s features and about VLC. Get apps through the official distribution channel for your platform.

When choosing a player, consider whether it is already installed, whether it supports the file’s exact format and codec, whether its version fits your operating system, whether you are opening a local file or a stream, and which output device you want to use.

If playback still fails
- Check the file itself. Confirm the download or copy completed; an incomplete or damaged file may fail even in a compatible player.
- Recheck format support. The extension may not reveal the encoding inside the container. Compare the file with the player’s official compatibility information.
- Check audio routing. Make sure sound is not going to an unexpected speaker, headset, or other output device.
- Hold off on codec packs and conversion. First establish whether the player supports the format. Installing codecs or converting a file is not the first diagnostic step; conversion can affect audio quality or metadata and may require format-specific choices.
