How to Use Thumbalizr with WordPress for Automatic Page Thumbnails

A practical guide to adding Thumbalizr page screenshots to WordPress with a custom shortcode, including API signing, refresh strategy, statuses, and limits.

You can show Thumbalizr screenshots on WordPress pages by building a signed Embed API URL on the server and returning it in an image element. Thumbalizr’s reviewed official materials do not document a dedicated WordPress plugin, so the shortcode below is a custom integration pattern—not an official or tested WordPress workflow. You must also decide which URL each post should capture and how often the image should refresh.

What the integration does—and what WordPress must decide

Thumbalizr’s Embed API is intended to embed generated thumbnails on a website. Its official documentation includes a PHP URL-generation example; the official integrations overview lists PHP libraries and extensions for other frameworks, but does not show a WordPress-specific plugin or automatic post-thumbnail workflow. See the Embed API documentation and integrations overview.

“Automatic” therefore means your WordPress code supplies the automation around the API. For each post, choose a target URL—such as the post’s permalink or a URL saved in post metadata—then decide when to request a capture and how to refresh or cache it. The API documentation does not prescribe WordPress hooks, metadata fields, or a cache plugin.

Before adding the shortcode

  1. Create a Thumbalizr account and obtain the Embed API account key and secret from the member area. The service homepage says basic API key signup is free and does not require a credit card: Thumbalizr.

  2. Choose which post types and target URLs are allowed. If a visitor can supply a URL, validate it and restrict the destinations to prevent your site from becoming an open capture proxy.

  3. Decide on output settings such as width, format, JPEG quality, capture size, delay, viewport dimensions, and country. Some options vary by account tier; confirm current availability in your account and the official demo before relying on them.

Add a server-side WordPress shortcode

The example below uses the documented Embed API signing approach: assemble and encode the query, then create a token using the query and secret. Keep both credentials server-side. This is an illustrative custom pattern; confirm the exact signing requirements and parameters against Thumbalizr’s current API documentation before deploying.

Add the code to a small site-specific plugin or a child theme’s functions.php. A plugin is usually easier to keep when changing themes. Replace the example credential constants with values stored securely in your server configuration; do not put the secret in page markup or browser JavaScript.

<?php
// Example only: verify current Embed API signing requirements with Thumbalizr.
function site_thumbalizr_image_shortcode( $atts ) {
    $atts = shortcode_atts(
        array(
            'url'   => '',
            'width' => '400',
            'alt'   => '',
        ),
        $atts,
        'thumbalizr'
    );

    $target = $atts['url'];
    if ( ! $target && is_singular() ) {
        $target = get_permalink();
    }
    if ( ! $target || ! wp_http_validate_url( $target ) ) {
        return '';
    }

    // Define these outside public theme/plugin code, for example in server config.
    $account_key = defined( 'THUMBALIZR_ACCOUNT_KEY' ) ? THUMBALIZR_ACCOUNT_KEY : '';
    $secret      = defined( 'THUMBALIZR_SECRET' ) ? THUMBALIZR_SECRET : '';
    if ( ! $account_key || ! $secret ) {
        return '';
    }

    $params = array(
        'url'   => $target,
        'width' => absint( $atts['width'] ),
        'format' => 'png',
    );
    // Use the parameter names and canonical signing order required by the current API.
    $query = http_build_query( $params, '', '&', PHP_QUERY_RFC3986 );
    $token = md5( $query . $secret );
    $src   = 'https://api.thumbalizr.com/?key=' . rawurlencode( $account_key )
           . '&token=' . rawurlencode( $token ) . '&' . $query;

    return sprintf(
        '<img loading="lazy" src="%s" alt="%s">',
        esc_url( $src ),
        esc_attr( $atts['alt'] )
    );
}
add_shortcode( 'thumbalizr', 'site_thumbalizr_image_shortcode' );

The signing and endpoint lines above illustrate the integration structure, not a guarantee that this exact snippet matches every current account or API configuration. Thumbalizr’s own PHP example is the authority for the required token construction, endpoint, and parameter names. Do not deploy until those details match the live documentation.

Use it in a post

On a singular post, the shortcode can derive the current permalink:

[thumbalizr width="400" alt="Screenshot of this page"]

Or specify a target URL explicitly:

[thumbalizr url="https://example.com/page" width="400" alt="Screenshot of example page"]

The code validates that the URL is syntactically valid, but that alone is not an allowlist. For public forms or untrusted shortcode input, restrict destinations and reject local, private-network, or otherwise disallowed hosts. Adapt validation to your site’s security requirements.

Choose how WordPress stores and refreshes screenshots

Generating a new capture during every page render can add avoidable work and make display depend on capture timing. Thumbalizr exposes status headers, so treat capture completion as a state rather than assuming every request immediately produces a ready image. A durable implementation can save the generated result or image URL and refresh it according to a defined policy.

Approach Where the image and credentials live Trade-offs
Embed the generated API URL The image is served through Thumbalizr; signing happens on your server. Less local file handling, but you must account for capture status and avoid generating a fresh request on every visitor page view.
Request and download a screenshot Your implementation stores the downloaded image locally; the PHP library describes URL generation and downloading/waiting for a thumbnail. More control over local caching and refresh timing, but uses your storage and delivery bandwidth and requires download/status handling.

These are implementation trade-offs, not a published WordPress comparison or benchmark. The official API documentation and library overview describe the underlying embed and download patterns.

Handle capture status and account limits

Thumbalizr documents the response header X-Thumbalizr-Status with values QUEUED, OK, and FAILED, alongside generated-time and error headers. Inspect these on the server or in a diagnostic client. For a queued capture, retain a placeholder and retry later rather than repeatedly initiating captures on every visitor request; for a failure, record the error detail and avoid presenting a broken image as a successful thumbnail.

Thumbalizr’s official demo describes free membership as watermarked, limited to screen-size rather than full-page capture, and fixed at a 1280×1024 browser size. Its API documentation describes additional options at paid membership levels. Check your current account terms and the live feature descriptions before choosing settings; this guide does not establish current pricing or quotas.

Migration note

In an April 8, 2026 vendor post, Thumbalizr said newly created accounts use ScreenshotCenter and that existing API calls, embed codes, settings, and integrations are intended to continue working unchanged during the migration. That is the vendor’s stated migration plan, not independent testing of compatibility or performance. Check the current account and documentation if you are starting a new integration. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its capture options include full-page shots, element capture, device presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, and caching. Before the shot, it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with verdict and billing information in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For example, this cURL call captures a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and setup:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Thumbalizr have an official WordPress plugin?

The reviewed official integration materials do not document one; the shortcode approach here is custom.

Can I use the post’s own permalink as the screenshot target?

Yes. The example derives the current permalink on singular pages, or accepts an explicit URL.
